It seemed incomprehensible for a forest to harbor giants shrouded in black and monster-like beings. Though that was one of many things that remained a mystery to the young man with fragments of a white mask placed on his face. He could not recall anything prior to waking in the domain of quartz covered trees with only a sword placed by his side. The humanoid youth’s confusion was further exacerbated by the presence of the aforementioned dwellers which he could feel and see where they are. Before he could have time to figure out exactly how this feat was possible, he took the sword and fled with fear while trying his best to remain out of sight.
It seemed as though the feeling would not vanish, and he continued to run past the trees almost without end. He would go in one direction and suddenly detect more. Nothing made sense. To the relief of the bare individual, at a certain point in the forest, the feeling finally faded. His breath was heavy after strenuously looking for safety, but he had the chance to take in the surrounding environment. It was truly something to behold and the air was pleasantly calming. The sky above was particularly fascinating to look at. It was as if the blackness above had holes of light shining down; a trait that the black haired man had shared as he discovered there was a hole in himself just above the right side of his chest.
As he continued to wander and observe in silence and shadows, he noticed that all of the misshaped creatures that dwelled within these lands had the very same hole somewhere on their bodies. Even the ones who were nearly as large as the trees with the great white faces. Many of them that were much closer in size to the masked youth had some form of clothing to cover parts of their oddly structured bodies. They could speak somewhat intelligently with one another and referred to their kind by the word Hollow or otherwise a name. This made the shorter man question if he was just like them. Almost everything about them had matched with himself: the mask, the hole, and especially the hunger. The man accepted that he was the same as the Hollows and took a name that in his mind would fit amongst the others: Flash Ruiz. He was still unsure of himself, but this knowledge was all he had aside from the sword which he felt incomplete without it.
To quell the hunger, Flash kept to his scavenger-like behavior and watched from a distance as other Hollows would occasionally kill and eat each other and he would take what was left if anything at all, including the rags that he had fashioned for someone of his stature. There were times when he was caught by other Hollows and he would retreat with nothing and would have to attempt the same elsewhere as the days carried without indicating any change. But one day there was a discovery like no other: Flash overheard some Hollows speaking of a land outside of the Forest of Menos. This was something he had thought was not possible. The land never showed a sign of ending, but the Hollows spoke of the sky as a form of a barrier between them and whatever resides above. Flash followed them discreetly up the trees of quartz until they had reached the black wall and as they had stated, there was something beyond.
Once there were no other Hollows that he could sense both with his enhanced senses and the unexplained feeling he had, he took to the apex of one tree. He doubted he could, but he took his sword and pierced through the darkness. What came through was light causing Flash to become ever more curious. He kept cutting until an opening was made for him to worm his way through. But before he could, a bed of white sand fell through the hole he made. This perplexed Flash, but he decided to press on while making sure to keep the sand from falling into his eyes. When he came through and the light faded, Flash could see that he was in a large desert landscape beneath the night, but lit by a bright crescent moon. More questions came, though all he could do was wander in this new land of white and black emptiness seeking to answer the questions that were raised in his mind.
