Karakura Town… It had been a good few months since he’d been back to this little suburb of Tokyo, and the people had managed to rebound quite miraculously. Sure it had been nearly a year, but most of the buildings were almost entirely rebuilt, the enormous edifice that was the Vigilance HQ was nearing completion… Sometimes it was good to see the fruits of your labor, even if they weren’t exactly benefitting you.
What had brought him back here? For a time on the flight over, he’d been attempting to justify it as trying to return to the Vigilance Organization; after that he’d tried to pass it off as explaining to Munashii why he hadn’t reported in for a while, but now he was beginning to realize it was nostalgia. That was it. He simply wanted to see what the people of Karakura Town had been doing since he went on his little sabbatical…before being kidnapped and experimented on.
That was a thing he wished that he had had time to put down in a few journals. The ones he’d read from his mother had more than convinced him that she’d lost her mind; her ravings about perfect beings, creatures so strong that they dwarfed normal human comprehension… And yet he’d met one, and they were far from perfect. It had been quite a while now and yet still he could quite clearly recall Amaya Kidachi, the arrancar that had kidnapped him, having been something altogether different when she kicked him out. Such beings were not perfect, far from it. There had been something bothering her, some kind of swirling torment that had latched onto the core of her being and refused to let go. It was…kind of relieving to have realized that there was nothing he could’ve done. It was just another thing that he couldn’t blame himself for.
He didn’t have anything to do, or at least anything he wanted to do. He didn’t want to go and have to deal with anything at Vigilance and, as much as he wanted to go see Kokuou Munashii at Kosa, he wasn’t exactly ready for the mountains of paperwork more than likely awaiting him there. So he did the only thing that he could: he began to wander around aimlessly.
He went through a nearby park and watched the children at play. He began to think about what might happen if he joined them…and yet did it matter? The training he’d undergone just to awaken his inner power… That had made him a good bit stronger and faster than the normal human, just like it had when he’d had his old powers. But he knew that already. He had been hoping to simply go back to his old life, but, as always, something pulled him back in.
In the end he didn’t join the men playing ball, or talk to any of the children. It was better that the non-spiritual had as little contact as was necessary with spiritualists to avoid the chances of making even MORE spiritualists, or just causing unneeded hollow attacks. That was something Raph had not only learned, but had also decided during his training.
Once he was away from the park he moved through the mall. It wasn’t a place that he could exactly remember, though he’d been there at least once, possibly twice. The place was busy and packed as usual; everywhere he looked there were people going this way and that way and this way and that way buying up just about everything in sight. He chuckled to himself and continued walking as a child screamed at his mother for a piece of candy. How long before the boy was looking back at his life and wondering where it all changed? A few years, perhaps? A decade even?
Hell, Raph was doing that now, even as he sat down in an old café probably a mile from the mall. He had decided to enjoy a nice little cup of coffee. It was certainly nice to be back in Karakura Town after so many months.
