A long exhale escaped her lips. It shook slightly toward the end, wavering as an indication of nerves getting the better of her but Rania couldn’t help it. There she stood in front of the Senkaimon gate, the same one she had, in a psychotic break, tried to escape from not so long ago. Well, here she was back at the same gate and yet somehow it felt as if she was being dwarfed by it more than tenfold than last time.
How was that even possible?
Rania paced back and forth quietly, arms hanging loosely at her sides as she occasionally shook them to try and calm the nerves. It didn’t work though and then the woman wondered how she had even arrived at this point.
Well, she didn’t really have to wonder; Rania knew exactly how it all happened, remembered it down to every bland detail. It started with an offhand comment, an innocent and harmless little comment. She was at dinner with Shun for the first time in a long while and it had just slipped out. “By the way, I’m not sure if you remember from the time our memories transferred but… I think someone’s looking for me and if I don’t get to him first, I think he’s going to try to—actually, no. I'm pretty positive that he is going to kill me.”
That's how all of this started. Yes, it was the most innocuous of comments… wasn’t it?
Because if by someone, I had really meant a person who was, you know, technically my ex. If by ‘ex,’ I also meant that he used to the Primera Espada and if by ‘Primera Espada,’ I had meant that he was now Broken as well as the King of Las Noches. He was going to kill me if I didn’t do something about it. How do I know, you ask? It was… just a feeling. Yeah, just a hunch in the end but really, these were just small details that didn't really matter... right?
But trying to lie to herself wasn't going to do anyone any good. That which turned him into Obsession was exactly who he wanted dead now. I was wearing the wrong face. To him, it was a face that belonged to someone else.
“Well, are you ready, Rania?” A voice to her side finally broke the silence. It was Shun. He stood by her side with a slightly crooked smile but still, it was warm and gentle and very much like Shun. Worried eyes glanced over at him. The only she could do was shake her head silently. It was hard to speak knowing what she was about to embark on. Part of her wondered why Shun was even allowing this, why he was so willing to let her go but deep down, it made sense to Rania. Given his fervent hatred for all things Hollow, it really shouldn’t have surprised her that when she looked into his eyes, she saw a glint of twisted delight emanating from them. He was proud, proud that she was doing this not only for her own sake but also… that she even felt this way.
Somewhere down the line what felt like love suddenly turned into hatred and that feeling that she had turned into a belief that she had to kill Obsession before Obsession could kill her first. Was it crazy? Absolutely. Did any of it make any sense? No, not really, especially given that the odds were heavily stacked against her but she had to try. Rania would be doing a disservice to herself staying isolated in Soul Society. After all, there was a life out there that she had to become reacquainted with eventually.
So with another sigh, Rania smiled weakly at Shun, before quietly joking, “Spare me the speech, okay? It’ll only make me more nervous.” Her eyes trailed the hell butterfly circling around her head before curtly nodding to the Fourth’s Captain. “I’m ready as I’ll ever be. Do it.”
But the Senkaimon gate didn’t open when Rania gave the okay; instead, a rift beside it slowly appeared. It was a Garganta. The world to which she was travelling was not the Human World but rather Las Noches. Where would one expect to greet the King of Las Noches, after all?
“Tch, to think I used to be able to do this myself. Now I need someone to do it for me.” Yet a third sigh escaped her lips as she said this. Before the portal could completely close, Rania turned around and gave Shun a small wave. Weakly, she unconvincingly said to him, “I’ll be back soon…”
But would she? There was absolutely no guarantee that she would survive this.
Falling, falling, that familiar feeling of falling from the sky soon engulfed her and before she knew it, Rania had landed in the world of perpetual moonlight and sand. With one hand, Rania picked up some of the sand that blew over with a soft breeze and as she stood up, watched it fly away with the wind.
There was silence all around. She could only hear the beating of her own heart, standing on the outskirts of Las Noches.
Rania was back. She was now a stranger on the outside looking in but she was back.
Back ‘home,’ one could even say. The reunion though? It was going to be anything but happy as everything slowly burned.
