She was getting stronger. Maybe Abba wouldn't admit it, fully, his words still just as sharp and cutting as ever. But lately, he had scolded her several times over on her poaching of his little underlings in Las Noches, a sure sign that things were shifting. She had only begun to prey on his subordinates because nothing else felt sustainable, no other soul taking up enough space in her gullet to sooth the deeply agonizing hunger. Before, the thought had been unimaginable, but when the pangs of need gnawed at her Xiaobei found herself ready to pounce on any Hollow with a spark of power.
That was why, today, she had been cast out with an ugly look, and told not to come back for a while. Before maybe the dismissal might have hurt, now it was more of a sting to her pride, as Xiaobei romped through the sands in search of new prey. Abba had been harsh the last few months, and in turn, she had grown colder, trying to keep up with his expectations. The very fact that she was growing, though, it had to mean something, that her attempts at proving herself to him were coming to fruition.
Frolicking through some of her excess energy, Xiaobei glanced up at the pitch-black sky. A cold wind rippled across her exposed skin, sending her sleeves trailing and the many ribbons tied about her form fluttering behind her. Sniffing the air, tongue lolling past the sharp canines of her Hollow-mask, she inhaled deeply to let the scents flood her mouth. Tasting each individual reiatsu signature, Xiaobei cocked her head at an oddly familiar tang.
It was musky and dark like goldenrod. Taking another sip of the air, she couldn't place it in her memory, but it just seemed marked. Rising up on the balls of her feet, Xiaobei hunched her mostly bipedal form, slipping into the darker shadows of the nearby sand dunes as she began to stalk her prey. While it might sense her reiatsu, if it was smart enough, the large open expanse would make it harder for the other to pin her location. Probably.
And all she needed was a second, a momentary glimpse, to figure out what was so familiar about this scent on the wind.
