Suicide. An act that ended in the death of something by intentional or sometimes unintentional means. It could be used to destroying ones finances. Ones career. Just about anything really. But in most cases suicide meant to end ones life. In some cultures suicide had been a means to atone for ones misdeeds. In others it had been a means of running from a problem. In some cultures it was a respected tradition in a way. In others it was demonized and shunned. But no country had a rich history of suicide like Japan.
As recent as the mid twentieth century they'd had suicide attackers. Kamikaze they'd been called and they'd suicide attacked American bombers and naval vessels in attempts to sink them or bring them down. It had worked in some cases. In others it had cost a man or men their lives for no gain. And for centuries before that they had committed suicide to save honor or whatever reasons they had. They'd even had ritualistic suicides. The whole thing made little sense to someone looking in who'd existed in an equally barbaric yet vastly different time period on the other side of the globe. The fact remained however that the Japanese had a love affair it seemed with taking their lives.
Case in point being that a particular forest at the base of a very famous mountain was and had been for seemingly centuries the go to place to kill oneself. And if you looked at the terrain it was clear why. Dense canopy coverage. Lots of little dips and gullies to set about killing oneself in. The place had once been a pyroclastic flow field. That lava flow had been taken over by trees in the years following it and thanks to the hardness of the volcanic rock had never been cleared leaving pristine old growth forest. Due to these fact travel through the forrest could be challenging if one strayed from officially maintained trails. So you'd at some point or another, if you ventured far enough off the trail, likely run into a swinging corpse or someone who'd purposefully overdosed on something to end their life for whatever reason they had. Beyodn that the site had been used for centuries for suicide and what the Japanese called Ubasute. Which was the act of taking the infirm or elderly into the forest or onto a mountainside to die from either exposure, dehydration or starvation. As such the gotei had a regular patrol group that pretty much lived there. They swept the forest as best they could to find souls of the recent departed and provide them passage to the soul society.
They were not alone in the knowledge of this places existence. The hollows prowled it as well. This was prime feeding ground and because of bountiful amount of fresh, albeit possibly low quality, souls they were stubborn in their constant return to the area. A turf war smoldered and flared from time to time between both sides. Sometimes a particularly nasty hollow or a larger than average group of the curs would show up and a deployment from the fifth would need to be sent to run the creatures off and perhaps grab a few fresh souls along the way. A great training run for fresh faced recruits. Which was what was about to happen.
The wolf of the fifth had made it known around the division that she'd be leading this patrol and was looking for the participation of fresh faced and wide eyed recruits to tag along on this mission. The first two to get the the gate would be the two she took along. Hopefully whoever deciuded that this was something they wanted to have on their record would show up soon.
