At first she had thought about going back to the city, but in the end the idea of being surrounded by polluted air and noisy people hadn't appealed to her enough to actually drive back. That's why, instead, Kasumi had taken the motorbike around the mountain and slowly crawled through the coiling roads until her gaze fell upon the side that was facing the sunset.
Step for step she had then climbed the side of the mountain with some help from the trees and their roots. The sight slightly reminded her of her inner world and brought an icy lump to her throat. The girl swallowed calmly and proceeded to move forward until the orange glow of the sinking sun covered the tops of the higher trees. Finding a bald spot in the forest she sat down and made herself comfortable with her gaze wandering around the horizon as if searching for something magical.
Just mere hours before she had been furious and hurting, but now all of that was gone. There was an odd sort of numbness running through her veins that prevented her from feeling.. anything, really. She knew that her Spirit was more than just mad with her, but couldn't bring herself to care. It was a shame, yes, but it wasn't as if she was planning to leave Vör behind – the Valkyrie would be going with her. They would always be together from here on.
'I've already told you that this is not the way out.'
You don't have to be afraid. It doesn't hurt. I've done it before, it'll be over quickly. Then we'll be able to go back to being normal. Perhaps even to having a family that'll care for us.
'Stop running away. We can fix this if you only give it a shot. It will take time, but you've heard her, you have plenty of time now.'
And what does she know of that? It's easy to talk when you're still human.
Enjoying the gentle warmth on her skin Kasumi leaned back a little. She had never been one to cherish the sun, had always preferred the company of rain and snow. They had felt welcoming and soothing to her, while the sun had only searched to scorch her with its heat. Today, however, its rays were strangely comforting.
'Kiriko would have judged you weak.'
Kiriko left.
'Think about Miyuki..'
She'll forget me soon. A Captain has a lot of duties. Besides, she'll find plenty of friends.
No matter what excuse the Spirit brought up, Kasumi didn't deem any of them worthy. Her mind was set on maintaining this peaceful moment that she was in now. There was no need for stress, worry or pain. Certainly not when she already knew that life didn't actually end. Everyone simply moved on to another part of the cycle.
'That's exactly what has brought you here.'
She couldn't argue with the truth. Lightly shaking her head from side to side the girl sighed while looking up at the sky. It was growing dark. She had wasted enough time.
Folding her legs beneath her, Kasumi unsheathed her Zanpakuto. The steel had a blue glow to it while the oval crystal glittered briefly in the remainings of the sunlight. Turning her weapon Kasumi awkwardly grabbed the blade itself and took a deep breath. Her head was spinning slightly when the adrenaline kicked in. Suddenly her stomach turned, she sucked in some air. Her hand shook a bit but she managed to firmly hold the tip of her sword against her stomach. A shivering gasp escaped her dry lips. Tomorrow would be a new day.
Cycle. .. cycle.
Hopefully it wouldn't turn out to be a one-way ticket.
Taking a deep breath she hoped memorize the refreshing breeze against her skin, the bits of sun and the dry twigs their cracking beneath her knees. That would be just in case that this would turn out to be the last time that her senses worked. With gritted teeth she waited another heartbeat and then sharply pushed with all of her might.
'STOP IT.'
The blade came out on the other side. Warm blood soaked her stomach and back in thin streams of crimson. She clung to Vör with sticky hands and coughed. Damn, it hurt. Another cough forced her forward. Awkwardly placing her right palm on the ground she caught herself from falling onto her face.
'Pull it out. Heal the wound. Use Kaidō.'
With every word that Vör spoke Kasumi felt her guilt grow. She hadn't wanted to hurt the Spirit. Vör deserved to have a choice to live her life the way she wanted to, but, unfortunately, they were linked. If there had been a way to let her roam freely around the world Kasumi would have agreed to it. A shame that life was so unfair.
'You stubborn idiot, I don't need a life without you. We could live if you just stopped killing us!'
