Up until now, it's been run as a nomination and vote. Only one (or two in the event of a tie) could win. Most of that left a few people or threads as getting votes, and the rest of the nominations were kind of left in the dust. Once upon a time, winning even had a GP reward for it! Thankfully, we've long since moved beyond that. But as time passed, OTM has received less and less attention from the community, fewer and fewer nominations...and we've had some pretty shaky months this year.
So an idea got passed into staff, and thrown about a bit. We already have a gratitude thread that focuses on things outside of BG. What we're proposing is turning OTM into a place where you can recognize and commend people and threads for their work on BG. Whether that's because of their staff work, how they helped you specifically, their writing ability, what their character is doing, or a particularly fucking spectacular thread, it'd all go in here. Moving to this would mean that there's no need to nominate and then vote, you're complimenting someone directly for what they did that's awesome.
Thoughts? We might want to keep this open only for a week at a time, to limit potential spam, or to make sure that someone can only pick two of each category and ensure they're offering their recognition to the people they think most deserve it, as it were. Or we could leave it open all the time at the risk of people spamming it up constantly. Are people happy with what we have now and don't want to change it? Is the concept of OTM and this kind of recognition dead but for Of The Year? Feel free to give your feedback here for pretty much everything related to it.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Chesh is 1000000% behind this idea!!! I think it should be left up all the time - there's not a problem with it being spammed, is there? That just means people are getting recognized more!!
I was never comfy w/ voting but this is an absolutely wonderful idea? It would make so many people so happy!!! :D

There are minor problems with it being spammed, in that you'll bump off others and just take up the whole feed with your own kudos. Timely and sincere shoutouts should keep it very manageable though. If it isn't, we can always adjust.
Edit: By sincere I mean do not shoutout to literally everyone you thread with ever or every time you post. Shoutout when someone has done something to earn it.

That's totally fair! Everyfin should be done in moderation, even positivity. I do genuinely think that leaving it open all the time will do more good than bad, however. :3
If you clear it all at once it stinks for the people who do amazing things a couple days before the clearing.
Just clear it whenever it reaches a certain number of shoutouts, unless the oldest shoutout isn't a week old. There's bound to be lots of overlap anyway.

Honestly I like the idea of an up to date scroll bar for shout outs, in specific categories. And a thread open for people singing the praises of others is pretty awesome. I mean that's what I've mostly been using the Grat. Thread for anyways. But I like this idea.
