Time. It was a curious thing when one really got down to it, there was a point that time became meaningless, that it forced oneself to realize there was no going back. It was this line of thought that was driving the tall, blonde man now as he swung the blade- staring at the chipped, serrated edge with narrowed eyes. There was only silence within his blade, and yet he couldn't help but feel the power within it.
Still, Shushin refused to speak- both of them. He could not train what refused to work with him. But that was not the only issue .. he hated it, how rusty he had become. The more he went on missions, or sparred with another, the more he tried to do anything he could feel the differential between what he used to be capable of, and what he performed now. But he felt like it was more, like there was something he was missing no matter how hard he tried to remember. But there was no one left that knew him from then .. the world had blended together in that point of his life now.
He could remember only the feeling of his blade sinking into flesh. The sensation that clarified he was still surviving even though he had wanted to only die, yet his body and instincts refused to allow it. What had been so different then then now? What was holding him back to the point that he couldn't even properly control and understand his own powers? There was only one woman that he could think of that could help him answer that question- the one whom had taken him in when he had lost her, when the downward spiral to the realization of life had finally begun.
Skylar- a "retired" (as retired as a Shinigami could be) member of the third division. She refused to tell him how old she was, but he knew that she was strong .. far stronger than him, and that she had known him when he had first lost her. When he was at his peak- what felt like ages ago, before he had gotten rusty, brittle, weak. Gin was convinced the woman had the answers to his questions- the real issue was whether or not he could actually get the fiery red head that had helped him become sane after his fall- would help him gain that power again, or not.
The last time they had met she had demanded a deal from him. If he wanted her help, he needed something to fight for- something she could actually respect and not the answer he had given. She had no interest in his "Perfect World", or his desire to become a god- it was all relative to her. What she wanted from him was something with more "substance" as she had put it .. something that she could see the true potential in, that could grant him the strength, the anchor, that he needed. But Ginjo was finally certain that he had obtained exactly that.
Careful, slow- Ginjo's feet carried him through the darkness as he allowed his gaze to flow upward toward the orphanage that Skylar ran- recalling the last time, how he had appeared similarly. Then she had demanded that he tell her when he was coming next, the thought made his lip twitch- Ai had been here last time as well. But today was going to be a surprise visit as well it would seem. Slowly, his footing carried him forward as he tucked his hands into his pockets. He raised a hand, carefully knocking on the door as he heard the sound of footsteps approaching, before the redhead opened the door- arching a brow slowly before her brow arched.
"Didn't I tell you to warn me ahead of time so I could make food you idiot .."
A slight smirk formed on his lips as he replied.
"You did, but I'd rather avoid your cooking if I can help you .. unless Mira is around, maybe?"
"Tch .. come in then. What do you want, kid?"
Stepping forward, Ginjo reached up and loosened his shirt, unbinding them- he was off duty, so he had no reason to wear his Shinigami garb. Carefully he looked around him, entering as he pulled the door closed behind him- his eyes trailing toward the women as he moved after her patiently. Tucking his hands into his pockets once more as they approached the normal meeting room, he would debate her question as he flopped into his usual chair, feeling the way it gave out under him- molding to his shape and weight as his eyes slanted a bit.
He knew what she was asking.
She was simply inquiring on what he wanted at the moment, but he had turned it on her. He told her instead exactly what he should have said so much earlier, the last time he had come here asking for her help to make him strong- to help him become the god the world needed. But that wasn't true. That was his ambition, but was it truly what he wanted- at his core? .. No, it was something far more simple then that.
"Strength."
He finally responded, causing the woman to halt midway through handing him an ale- her eyes staring down at him quietly in thought- eyes dissecting him, curious if what he was saying was serious, or not. Measuring if that was enough, measuring just how far he meant those words.
The woman stared down at him quietly, debating his words as she slowly tapped her foot- before placing the bottle of sake in his hand and meandering over to her chair, collapsing into it heavily as her eyes stared into his own for several long moments, as if still contemplating his words- and yet her tone was not one of a person that was denying him either.
"You already have plenty, kid. You don't need more, what are you on about."
"You know that's not true .. you're far stronger than I a-"
"I said you don't need more, Gin .. your heart is corrupted. It has been for years .. people like you shouldn't have power .. it only ends badly. I told you that years ago. If you want me to help you get stronger you need a real reason to want strength .. not so you can be some stupid 'god of the world' speech you gave me last time."
Ginjo's eyes stared into the woman's own, and a slow smirk formed on his lips before he lightly tapped a finger against the top of the bottle.
"There's that too. I won't lie. But .. I have another reason now too, Sky."
A brow was cocked curiously, staring at him as she leaned forward a bit curiously. Her hand resting on her knee as she held the ale from her lips a moment to focus on him- a spec of hope mixing with the curiosity, for the first time debating if the young man may actually have finally found something worthwhile to drive him forward and past his own darkness.
"Oh ..?"
Slowly his lips straightened from the smirk, his eyes trailing downward as he stared at the drink in his hand .. slowly clenching it as he sighed.
"Do you remember .. what I told you, on why I wanted to become a god?"
"Of course I do. You 'don't want to loose anything else'. It's a foolish thought, I said it then and I say it now."
"Remember my oath as well then? That I would never truly care about anyone or thing until I was strong enough to keep it?"
"Another foolish notion. Yes."
"I lied."
Her brow arched slowly as she leaned forward, before her eye slowly closed and she leaned back- several moments of silence filling the air as she contemplated his words quietly, his body language and how he was acting.
"The blonde?"
"Not just her. But she made me realize the others as well, yes."
A slow smirk formed on the redhead's lips, and a sigh left her lips.
"To be young and fall in lov-"
"Don't."
Her eyes softened slightly at the harshness, and pain in his tone- and she sighed once more as she slowly straightened, rising as she set her own bottle down and looked down at the boy- no .. the broken man that sat in front of her. His words filling the air. For the first time in a very long time, his tone was not charming, or suggestive, manipulative or cold- it was simply sad.
"Please don't say it. I can't. Not again."
After several moments, she sighed and let it go as she dusted herself off before she stared down at the young man for several moments .. before turning and heading toward the mantel over the fireplace. Her eyes on the large golden mace that rested over it, glinting in the light despite the dust that covered it.
"I suppose it's a good first step. Very well."
Slowly his face rose, looking at the woman as her hand slowly outstretched toward the mace- grasping it firmly and tugging it down as she spun it lightly in her palm, before placing it against her shoulder and glancing back at him.
"You want strength to protect? .. I'll give it to you. But I won't go easy on you, Gin .. don't expect this to be easy."
His eyes slowly hardened as he straightened slowly, placing the ale to the side as he adjusted the blade on his back and met her gaze with his own.
"If it was easy, I wouldn't want it anyway .."
"Well said."
A slight smirk formed on her lips, before she turned and moved toward the small park that was within the center of the orphanages complex. Ginjo's heavier footfalls slowly trailing after the woman. As they moved toward the center of the complex toward the garden area that she had carefully maintained, she would turn and calmly spin the mace as she slammed the head into the earth- but there was no impact on the ground, instead the air itself seemed to crack. His eyes narrowed slowly on her as he arched a brow.
"You don't want her to know, right? .. You've always been like that. Ever since I found you covered in blood, wandering back from those barbaric districts, from Zaraki- and worse."
His eyes softened, but he said nothing as she eyed him, before sighing.
"I hope you realize this will make it a lot harder on me you punk .. but fine. In that case .. no one will know. I will make it so."
The cracks in the air spread, and she stated simply as her eyes narrowed.
"Sign thy Contract, Rumplestiltskin .."
He would blink, watching the mace grow- the handle extending, the head widening and gaining razorlike spines at their tips. He felt the shift in the air as she entered his Shikai, but more importantly he would watch the world around them. He heard her words as she spoke firmly, and his gaze would raise upward to examine her. Finally, the hilt would spin- as paper unrolled from within it- the entire handle being a large scroll.
"I summon the Contract. Rule, all time will move at three hundred times the normal speed within this room. Exchange, you age the same speed as time passes within. This contract may be broken by either signature holder at will. Signature, Ginjo Xoi. Signature, Skylar Greengarden."
Ginjo's eyes lowered as the scroll unraveled rapidly, swirling as the Kanji spread across it before spinning to form two circles. Skylar raising her hand and pressing it forward, the circle glowing before the signature of her name formed within it in blood red. Similarly, Ginjo would raise his own large hand and press it into his own circle- watching as the Kanji for his name formed in it. The scroll spun, swirling and taking itself back into its original size and shape, a soft chime sounding as the contract was sealed and made.
With the chime, suddenly everything around the pair outside the "room" that had been made, would stop. The world becoming fuzzy and blurred as the cracks spread, creating a bubble around them as she slowly lifted the mace, watching him for a moment as he examined the contract- before he was certain the deal was complete.
"You froze time ..? I didn't know your contracts could do that."
"No. No one can just freeze all of time, kiddo .. I made a bubble. A pocket of time and space that's moving at an accelerated speed. Everything out there is moving at the normal speed- so it's like it's standing still .."
"I see. So that was the differential of three hundred you mentioned."
"Correct. Rumble is a trickster though, so who knows .. what matters is we have plenty of time now. But be aware, once the contract is over- you'll keep the effects, including the time lost. This ability of mine is how I got as strong as I did so quickly .. and its why I look the way I do."
Ginjo's eyes trailed toward the woman's grey streaks through her crimson hair, and his eyes narrowed a bit. He was still young, he could afford to make this sacrifice- if he actually dedicated himself to it. A sly smile formed on her lips, noting the resolve in his gaze even as she explained the drawback of the ability.
"Are you ready?"
"As I'll ever be."
Suddenly the air would swirl, and the redhead was in front of him as his eyes shot open in shock as he backpedaled, a hand raising to grab his blade and slam it downward to counter the mace- to find she was behind him instead.
He felt the impact, after he was sent flying to slam into the earth, rolling through it to collide with the barrier with a thud, blood flowing from his mouth as he winced. Struggling to rise, in time to feel her boot collide with his stomach- sending him into the air with the crack of bone.
"What happened, Gin?! You got slower than the last time you fought me!"
He winced as he flew through the air, flipping as he collided with the barrier, feet digging into it as he drew the blade with a clang of metal, staring down at the woman as blood rolled from his chin.
She was talking as if they had fought in the past, what was she on about? She wasn't the type to lie. He frowned down at her, confusion as he launched himself from the 'roof' and shot toward her as her eyes easily followed him, the mace raising and slamming into the blade with so much force he felt it vibrate through his arm- wincing as he saw the crack appear across the blade.
"You really did get weaker .. using a sword instead of your hands as well .. what are you doing you fool? That blade of yours is already in rough shape, since you won't talk to one another- trying to use a partner that won't communicate with you is worse then just using a stick off a tree!"
Sucking her teeth in annoyance, her shin slammed into his side as his eyes slowly widened and he was sent flying head over tails to slam into the barrier. Blood flowing freely from his mouth and nose.
She'd hit him three times. Already he had five broken ribs, a sprained wrist and two torn muscles in his sword-arm? He winced at the sensation, she really was strong, but what was going on? What did she mean weaker? Stumbling, he rose back up- staring at her with a mixture of suspicion, and confusion as she rested the mace on her shoulder lightly.
"What's going on, Sky? What do you mean weaker?"
Her eyes narrowing slowly she lowered the mace a bit and eyed him for a few moments, as if checking to see if he was being honest about his question- before she would slowly sigh as she leaned on the mace.
"You're serious huh .. wonder why you forgot. When I first met you, what do you remember?"
He blinked a few times, and frowned, relaxing his stance- though wincing as he held the side of his torso that had been beaten on. Trying to think back on his first meeting of the women so long ago- or at least it felt like it. It had been after his sisters death .. he had been wandering for years, lost, slaughtering, killing. He had nothing but anger within him, hatred, at himself for not dying- for letting her die.
"I was wandering the outer districts .. I had slaughtered the group that had attacked me. I hunted them down .. they had killed someone in front of me, I forget who. It mattered a lot then, but not now .. I believe it was a child, or perhaps a family ..? I'm not sure."
She nodded softly, crossing her arms as the large mace leaned against her leg lightly. it disturbed her a bit that he no longer cared about why he had slaughtered those men, but it was accurate so she saw no need to bother trying to explain. She suspected he wouldn't care even if she tried to tell him anyway, instead she probed him for a bit more information.
"And ..?"
Ginjo's brow arched slowly, the answer to that had been obvious. But in the same line of thought she was telling him he had forgotten something .. he supposed if it was anywhere, it was at that point. He was drawing a complete blank, there was nothing there.
"I passed out, blood loss and starvation I would assume. When I awoke my head was in your lap and you were calling me an idiot."
Her eyes hardened softly, and she slowly straightened.
"You're missing a pretty big part there, Gin."
His eyes narrowed slowly, was she trying to tell him that he had fought her before he had passed out? Before he thought he had actually 'met' her? Surely he would remember fighting against a monster like this woman?
"If you can't remember .. I'll make you remember. Maybe it'll unlock that power of yours you used to have .."
"What are you talking abou- Tch!"
He had no time to speak, forced to raise the blade to parry the incoming blow as her kick slammed into the already cracked blade- his eye wincing as he felt the pain rush up his arm before it snapped. Was it his arm, or the blade ..? He wasn't sure, he couldn't tell .. something had broken though, for certain.
Eyes widening as the steel shattered in all directions, and the impact slammed into his stomach- sending him flying backwards back into the barrier once more. He felt his head collide with something, and as he collapsed in a heap- he noticed that his arm was bent the opposite direction it should have been, the bone jutted out. He needed to fix that. He would bleed out. But for some reason darkness was approaching to quickly .. what kind of monster was she? Ginjo felt his eyes slowly close, and darkness took him.
