“No, nothing out of the ordinary, mom,” Luna sighed the words out as she leaned back into the wooden chair. “I know this is supposed to be a hot spot for spirits, but I’ve been here for days and have only seen average activity.”
Cafes were quickly becoming Luna’s go-to places when it came to her downtime. Who didn’t enjoy a nice hot cocoa with extra whipped cream? Certainly, she was one to appreciate the flavors and sweetness, though maybe a cup every day wasn’t the best for her oral hygiene. It was a good thing her mom didn’t know about her sweet tooth, otherwise the aging parent would come down upon her with a swift strike and a three hour scolding about proper health and behavior.
The thought made Luna recline a bit further into the chair and smile into her phone. Distant eyes stared out the nearby window, watching as the absent minded Japanese people strolled by. A lot of people were crammed into one place, so it was no wonder that, even at such an odd hour in the middle of the day on a weekday, the streets were still filled to the brim.
“Are you going to be staying there a little longer?” Her mom’s voice chimed through the phone, soft and worrying as always, but distant enough that anyone who might have overheard would have to second guess her relationship with the person on the other side of the line. “We don’t really need any back up here in Germany and I know you were excited to finally be in Asia.”
“I’m not sure yet,” Luna said with a shrug. “I still have a week on my hotel room and I’ve gotten a few under the counter jobs.”
Under the counter. Bounty was a better way to put it, though not entirely accurate. But saying the word “bounty” might raise a few eyebrows, even if most of her company didn’t fully speak English. There was always someone who wanted some sort of Hollow dead. A spiritually aware, but weak mortal who has nowhere to turn to. A widow looking for payback. They came in all shapes and forms. Though not exactly common enough to make a living off the job, they served as a nice distraction when nothing was going on.
“And the Shinigami?”
“Haven’t seen or heard them, yet. I took down one of the patrollers a few days ago, but it doesn’t look like they’ve caught on. I haven’t seen any reinforcements or anyone poking around.”
“Maybe patrols there are longer than a few days, so they haven’t noticed.”
“That’s what I was thinking. So I’ll probably hold out until my hotel is up and see if anything new develops.”
“Good girl. Have you talked with your brother?”
Benjamin. Did he still go by Benji? Probably not after his pilgrimage. After that, he had changed quite drastically. Became a full fledged man of the de la Cruz family. Mom and Dad were endlessly proud of him and how diligent he had become. A praise Luna never really saw, as she was always the diligent, hard worker. She hit that ceiling at an early age.
“Not yet. I was going to give him a call later tonight, since I think it’s still early AM hours for him.”
“Alright. I love you, Luna-pie.”
“Love you, too, mom.”
And with that, the check it was done. A daily habit that Luna more than thoroughly enjoyed. Getting to hear her mom’s voice was like music to the tired ears. It reignited her passion for her job and made her excited for what came next. After all, even in her aging years, her mom was still going strong as a Quincy. She was truly an inspiration for the first born.
Quietly, Luna took the final few sips of her cocoa as she flipped through the news on her phone. Well, she had started to before her eyes drifted upward a bit. Slightly to the left, higher in the sky. Past the roof and a few buildings.
Her phone was locked and pocketed in a flash as she rose to her feet. Only after she had neatly tucked the chair back into it’s proper place and returned the dirtied mug to the clerk did she leave the small building and make her way down the street. Hands in pockets, eyes lingering in the general direction of that all too familiar pull.
Really, she couldn’t help but smile a bit more when she noticed that it, too, was moving towards her. It seemed she had jinxed it and the dear Seireitei had found out about their missing man. At least she had something to pass the day with.
Never even breaking a casual walk, she slowly made her way down a few alleys and weaved her way closer and closer to the middle ground. Ironically, that so happened to be a small, mostly unpopulated park. After all, kids were at school and parents at work. Who in the right mind would be at a park this time of day?
The girl, donning her Quincy uniform proudly, slowed to a stop at the edge of the grass, eyes staring forward as she waited for him to show himself.
And show himself he did. With a little burst of speed -- flash step, no doubt -- he appeared before her. So nonchalant. No uninterested. She couldn’t help but wonder why someone like him was even there. But then again, she was probably giving him the exact same look.
“Maybe I haven’t been super clear the past few months,” Luna said with a sarcastic smile. “You spirits need to stay off my planet. So either you run back home with your tail tucked between your legs, or stand still and let me rip your soul from reality until there’s nothing left.”
Her smile shifted from sarcastic to excited.
