“Kirchengebet: Light of God.”
On his way to perfect his Quincy-targeting compass, Lucas needed to learn how to reach out to Quincy spiritual pressures before he could figure out how to track and pinpoint them. To this end, he developed a sort of bright signal, a tower of blue light that shot up into the clouds. Not only was it bright and clearly visible to those with spiritual awareness, but it had the unique effect of drawing the attention of Quincy within tens of kilometers by tugging at their very souls.
Mastering this step had been crucial to his compass. Without being able to seek out Quincy specifically, without knowing how to make something that could speak to them and leave out everyone else, he couldn’t make something capable of finding them. At the start, his goal had been to create a spire of light that not only drew Quincy attention, but that only Quincy could see. After all, it used a fair bit of spiritual energy and, therefore, would attract more than just Quincy.
The idea came to Lucas after another day of walking about the cities of Karakura and Tokyo both in some vain attempt to find more Quincy. He had a lot of luck up to this point, such as with Koichi. But that luck seemed to dry up very quickly, and he needed a more efficient way of speaking with the Quincy. He couldn’t go to them all at the rate he was going.
So, he figured, it was time to take a risk and bring them all to him.
Tonight—with the sky clear of clouds and most stars drowned out by Tokyo’s lights—was the first night he attempted such a thing. He picked a tall skyscraper that stood high above Tokyo and activated the spell. In the first ten minutes, he had a Quincy visitor. Fifteen minutes after that young man left, he was attacked by a flying, reptilian-type Hollow that necessitated that he not only shoot it out of the sky, but also that he vaporize the body as it plummeted so it didn’t crash into any buildings or pedestrians in the street below—the last thing he wanted on the night of his first attempt was a large count of collateral damage.
That was what really drew people’s attention. Three more Quincy showed up, their attention drawn more by the battle than the suspicious tower of light that was calling out to them. Just like the young man earlier, they were also unaffiliated and from a small family of Quincy in the Tokyo area. It wasn’t until they saw clear signs of a Quincy fighting off a Hollow that they knew they could probably trust what they were seeing and investigate. Even if not, the Quincy might have been injured and need help.
Unlike the solo young man, these three were very interested in the news about the Queen and the Order of the Quincy. He was proud to bestow each of them a rank as Companion-At-Arms, and gave them the means by which to stay in contact with him and the few people at the castle back in Berlin. The Quincy were still organizing, and it’d be just a while longer before they had a proper headquarters anywhere at all.
It was about an hour after that, with Lucas sitting on the edge of the skyscraper, that another spiritual presence crawled into his awareness. He had kept his spiritual sense on the entire evening so far, and it hadn’t failed him once. But this one was interesting: It edged out the four Quincy who had visited so far, and that was a matter of high importance.
They were coming from the other direction, which quickly brought Lucas to his feet. He ran across the roof of the skyscraper and stopped at the opposite edge, awaiting the arrival of the Quincy from below.
