Ahau let out an involuntary whimper as he lay in the empty cave alone. The feline Hollow stared out of the entrance into the eternal night of Hueco Mundo. For the last few months he had left the cave less and less. To begin with he had stopped travelling to the World of the Living out of fear of the Shinigami, especially thanks to that horrifying encounter in the forest, and then he had even stopped hunting his own kind upon the desert.
Frightened.
Fearful of death. Fearful of failure. Fearful of pain and danger. Most of all he was afraid to be alone.
And so very alone you are. hissed a voice in his mind. The voices...yes those too he feared. They had grown more and more common as of late since his abandonment.
Yes abandoned...that was right. His pack and betrayed him. First he had lost track of Depredador...he hadn’t seen her in a long time. Then after the incident in the forest where he forced Iko to flee he had ran from the Alpha’s fury. When he had returned Iko was gone and despite his constant searching Ahau had failed to find either bipedal Hollow.
So once more he was alone like before. Weak and unprotected.
And getting weaker. Hissed the voice once more.
The voices were getting more common too perhaps due to his growing hunger. He had found himself wondering more and more if this was the souls within him that he had consumed over the centuries or if his mind was just breaking from some internal flaw.
“Do you really want the answer little cat?” asked a new voice but this one was real and came from behind him.
Ahau spun around to look behind him but there was just darkness and not the simply dullness of a cave but true blackness. Spinning back towards the cave entrance he was faced with more nothingness. No matter which way Ahau turned he seemed to be lost in an eternal void.
“What trickery is this?” Ahau demanded attempting to keep the mounting horror from his voice. A failed effort.
Amused laughter rang out from beyond the darkness.
“No trickery O’Great One.” mocked the unseen speaker. “You are simply...slipping.”
Ahau’s crimson eyes flickered this way and that as he attempted to locate the source of the voice and after a few moments the Adjuchas became certain he could see movement in the blackness...more than one person....a lot more.
“Slipping?” he returned in an attempt to buy time.
“Yes. Slipping down to our level.”
Figures began to step towards Ahau from the darkness. Terrified Ahau had nowhere to flee as hundreds, perhaps thousands, of humanoid shadows advanced on the Hollow from every direction. The edge of their forms shifted constantly and their shape was always in flux giving the impression that each was a human made of darkness that changed appearance moment to moment. One second it might be a fat man, then a wafer thin child, then a tall woman. Changing. Constantly changing.
“Who are you?” he snarled at them.
They responded or at least they tried to but their voices were sounds on the furthest edge of his senses. Just out of reach.
“Don’t you know?”
The speaker. The one from earlier stepped out from between the shifting mass of shadows.
Tall and powerfully built with pale skin, a mess of short blonde hair and bright blue eyes dressed in some form of armour with a red cloak from his shoulders and a belt at his waist. He seemed to be a simple human.
“Don’t you?” he repeated the question a cold smile on his lips.
Ahau’s eyes flickered over him but there was sense of recognition.
The stranger shook his head “No of course you don’t. I was but one of many after all. I remember though. Ahau Kin. Hunter. Monster. Coward. Murderer. We…” he began holding his arms out the side in a gesture taking in himself and the shadowy figures “were once individuals but are now unheard masses that make up the whole. Victims. Food. The murdered who died by fang or by claw.”
The Hollow shook his head in denial. It was impossible. They couldn’t exist like this. Their individuality had been destroyed when they were brought into his eternal form. Souls one consumed became fuel for the dominant Soul. Ahau's original soul. They all existed as mindless, voiceless nothings existing to simply further him. This couldn't be real.
“Oh no. We are quite real.” the Stranger responded reading Ahau’s mind. “They have all forgotten themselves whether through trauma or pain. That is why they have become...this. Not I though. I remember everything.”
He stepped forward staring undaunted into Ahau’s eyes “I remember. I know all that you know. I am part of you...and soon I will become you!” he roared leaping forward as he drew the sword at his side and attacked the Hollow.
