Soundlessly the Senkaimon closed behind her, but Kasumi didn't follow the path home which laid ahead of her, not yet. Sitting down on the hard, foreign ground she took a deep breath while the Dangai around her was kept at an arm's length by the Shinigami's technology. She hoped that nobody would try to get a hold of her or drag her out of this place before she's had the time to smooth things over with Vör. The latter was obviously more than simply upset, and with reason. Still, she had called for her to follow and now that Kasumi had the time to, she effortlessly slipped into her inner world with slowly drooping eyes.
The first thing that caught her attention when she opened her eyes was the silence that reigned over her inner world. Aside from the crunching of snow beneath her feet she couldn't hear a single thing. It was odd, unnatural even. The waves which always lazily rolled onto the shore were frozen. A thick layer of snow was covering the beach, the sea and the forest on the opposite side of the water. From where she was standing she couldn't see anything but pure, endless white.
“Vör?”
Hesitantly calling for the Valkyrie she soon found out that her Spirit didn't feel like being near her young mistress. Perhaps this was another sort of test, Kasumi thought. She could clearly remember the time during her fight with Shun; the climb towards the top of the mountain with only the help of her hands and roots which could be found at the bases of the pine trees. It had been a painful but very educational experience. Thinking about it now caused the young Shinigami to feel even worse. Back then they had bonded so well.. and then.. what she had done today was unforgivable.
“You know I'm sorry! I.. I wasn't thinking. It was selfish. I was scared!”
I shouldn't have done it
“I know, but it's my fault as well. Follow me, I have to show you something. It's time.”
The visibility had been low and only got worse when huge flakes rained down upon the world. Snow seemed to be the only thing that existed and that's why it took Kasumi a moment to localize the tall blonde. Following in silence she couldn't help but to feel slightly sick. The crunching of their feet caused time to fade from existence, and after a while of peering through the falling snow the soft chinking of the silvery coins on Vör's belt had become Kasumi's true guide on their journey across the frozen waves.
They must have been on it for hours, because by the time they reached land again Kasumi could barely feel her feet. The small island they had set foot on reminded her of the rocks she had seen during her moments on the cliff – it wasn't all that huge she realized after a quick look to the left and right.
“Wha-.” She didn't even get to start her question, not to speak of finishing it – the Valkyrie was already heading deeper into the compact forest ahead. This felt like a game, but Kasumi knew she had to play it.
Climbing over the frozen rocks which protected the beach from the waves, she quickly crossed the small stroke of frozen sand before entering the same forest she had seen her Spirit disappearing into. The snowing had gotten less; she could see a shadow behind one of the trees. While the figure was obviously there, it was too small to be Vör. Cautiously, but curiously, Kasumi made her way towards the next line of tree trunks before getting slammed into the one on her left side.
“What the-?” The white-haired Shinigami growled while splinters of wood and pieces of ice rained down upon her.
Awkwardly stumbling to the side she saw a small lake with a hole in the middle. Wet footsteps led from the icy edges of the hole towards the snowy benches surrounding it. Slowly turning her head she followed the traces till her eyes fell upon two bare feet. Small feet. Icy feet. Bloodied feet. Two nails were busted, another one was missing. A dead body would have better feet than the creature had, and as she raised her head further, Kasumi recognized its maimed face as her own. Blue, turbid eyes stared back at her. Tatters of skin hung from the girl's right cheek looking as if someone had tried to claw open the right side of her face. The ivory locks were dull and wet – together with the traces in the snow they betrayed the creature's origin.
Confused – and most of all afraid – Kasumi cautiously reached out to touch the almost translucent skin which covered the bony face when dirty nails dug into her wrist with the force meant to hurt. Yanking her hand back she tried to get loose from the ugliness clinging to her, but the mutilated wreck of a female refused to let go.
Before she fully realized what she was doing, Kasumi was already screaming for her Spirit.
“Vör! Help me!”
