[On the Surface ]
Physical Description: On first sight, many people would probably overlook Dain in a crowd. From a distance he looks like any middle aged man, with an average height and build. However those that take their time to take a closer look, tend to find more than they expect. Underneath the spacious clothing hides a very fit body. Dain´s build is that of a sprinter, strong legs and arms yet smooth like water. Like a true athlete he sport a great muscle tone, firm outlinings, but never any bulging that could slow him down. He does sport a bit of extra weight near the stomach area. Or as he calls it; his ‘middle-age spread’.
His face looks older than it is. Wrinkles have already been edged into his face and he adorns a full white beard, like a puff of air on a cold winter day. What mostly makes him look old though is the look in his eyes. When he is alone there tends to be no life in his eyes, as if he were looking at something in the far distance that. However those who study him longer tend to find a spark of life deep within his brown eyes and although hidden by his beard, he sports very strong facial features. He has a sturdy jawline, a strong chin with a little dimple and a skin as perfect as a pearl beach. Even his once beautiful black hair is spotting more and more strands of silver.
Despite looking a bit older, he moves surprisingly fluid. Although his movements may seem a bit sluggish, he moves with a certain grace that could be a hint to an upper class upbringing. In addition his speech, regardless whether he speaks in Japanese, English or German, is rather formal. Contrary to his speech and movement though, Dain generally does not care about how he looks or what he wears. He barely owns any clothing and nothing newer than 6 years old. In his free time he prefers to wear blue jeans, an unbuttoned white shirt and a black tie. Even his hair, once the source of his pride, is now just running down, like a wild river.
This all changes though when he is working. His black Shinigami clothing is spotless and his hair is combed and tied down behind his head, as regulations prescribe.
Spiritual Description: Dain´s reiatsu is rather light gray and it swells out of him like a thick fog on a cold morning. As he continues to unleash his reiatsu it will ripple violently like a series of tsunami´s, yet it feels empty as a shade. Those who have felt it, tend to describe it like a bottomless pit. Curiously though is that in intense moments the reiatsu does seep into his irises, yet they do not turn grey. Instead they turn into a violent yellow, almost as if they are on fire.

[Behind the eyes]
Personality: Dain would by many be defined as a broken soul, a definition he rejects completely. He prefers to call himself realistic. His will to live had been snuffed out of him a long time before his actual demise and even in death he has not recovered. Despite that, or perhaps because of that, he is very social and nice. He always follows every order and rule, written or not, to the letter. He might be a bit dull and without any initiative, but he tends to be friendly and always accepts if he is invited. The odd thing is that he seems to like everything, from racing, to reading books and all day training sessions. Despite having many `friends´ and hanging out with them quite regularly, nobody barely knows anything about him, as he refuses to talk about himself. At least the part where he was still alive.
That is only the outward appearance though, as on the inside Dain is empty. Having been forced to work from an `early´ age, he never had time chase his dreams and in the end gave up on them completely. Having the reality forced down his throat that those without class, money and power have nothing in this world, he realized there was no point in dreaming. No point in trying to achieve something, as it all will be in vain anyway. He believes deep down that trying something for yourself is pointless and has given up completely. He is like a blade of grass, following the wind where it takes him, without even trying to forge his own path.
Perhaps it is because of this empty feeling or this lack of goals, but Dain is almost the embodiment of kindness. He would literally not even hurt a fly, as there would be no point in it. Unless of course he is ordered too, as he knows that it is futile to refuse orders.
However there is one oddity in his otherwise passionless life; reading. He loves to read stories, especially those with a fantasy theme. The kind of stories where a group of nobodies somehow manage to overcome all odds and emerge victorious. He even tries writing those sometimes, but never quite succeeds to finish them as for some reason all the characters tend to die.
All in all Dain is a happy, friendly guy and fun to be around with. Just don´t expect him to do anything on his own accord.
Goals & Achievements: Despite not having any real goals or dreams, believing nothing can come from them, he is okay with living. Despite all his believes and conviction, there is one thing he does know for certain: death does not gain him anything. Unless you have a life insurance off course.
There is only one thing he would truly want; a redo. A chance to live his life again and to make things right. However since time travel and ressurection are impossible, even in the realm of death gods, he has tried to abolish those feelings.

[Guardian Angel]
Zanpakutou Spirit:
Name: Her name is Kusari | くさりがま
Release: Cut! Kusari | カット - くさりがま
Appearance: Kusari looks like an older woman, roughly in her seventies and obviously undergoing the signs of aging. Her skin is wrinkly and is slowly starting to get gray. Her once (presumably) beautiful long hair is now frizzled and white. Most of her teeth have fallen out, leaving just a few molars and even those are so yellow/black that Dain suspects they could fall out as well. Even her deep blue eyes have started glazing over and it looks like there is a lense of a milkish white substance in front of them. Which –had it not been for her accurate beatings- would probably have lead Dain to believe Kusari might actually be blind.
Her clothing, although very old and clearly at least 50 years out of fashion, is that of a noble woman living around the year 1900. She tends to change what she wears, depending on Dain´s current state of mind. The dresses are always very colorfull and highly decorated with all kinds of precious gems, yet time has left their mark upon them. Complimentary she always wears very exotic hats, that are highly adorned with gems and feathers. Curiously though she always carries the same handbag. A small featureless black bag, no bigger than a purse, with a simple click lock.
The bag itself however must be magical as there is no limit to what she seems to pull out of there. Most notably is a 6 foot baking pin she draws out of there if he drops in unannounced. The bakin pin itself is unremarkable, but sports beautiful blue guard and a 3 cm Topas as a pummel, making Dain believe it used to be a katana of some swords.
Kusari might look like an older woman, but she certainly does not move like one. Depite slight tremors, that can even be heard when she speaks, she moves silently and fluid like the wind when she wants to. – Usually as violent as a storm as well, but that might be due to Dain – The countless times she ferociously whacked Dain with that ‘ridiculous’ baking pin are testimony enough.
Personality: On first sight Kusari´s personality does match with her looks: that of an annoying mother in law. At first that is really what Dain thought of her, that she was nothing more than an old hag which sole purpose seemed to be to complain, harass and to whack him. Especially the harassing gets on his nerves, as she is always trying to push him to do something. She constantly nags what he is doing with his life, what his goals and achievements are and that he is wasting some kind of potential.
Dain has begun to suspect there might be something more to her as he noticed he behavior –when not hitting him- was different of what he would expect. She almost seems to dance through the little green patch, sniffing flowers and sometimes even singing to the animals. It reminded him a bit of those silly princesses in the Disney movies he watched when he was still alive.
Another part that he only first discovered is that, aside from the softer side, she also has a caring nature. Whenever he is in trouble, she is always there for him with advice and knowledge. She also seems to have an unmost unnatural patience when she is trying to teach him something.
Most of the time she seems to hate Dain though and really gives him either the cold shoulder or a furious whacking.
Inner World: The inner world of Dain is rather weird. In the center, stand an old, but cute little house. It is made of bright red bricks, that are mostly overgrown by a yellow/brown ivy. The door and the window frames are made out of solid brown oak and even the windows seems to be made out of a natural colored substances that is blueish, yet see through. The inside has just the same rustical feeling, as all the furniture is made of the same brown oak. The style is rather medieval and in the center of the house burns a cozy fire, filling it with a warm glow.
Outside of the house is a little garden that completely surrounds the house and goes for rougly 20 meters in every direction. Despite Kusari´s looks, she seems to be able to maintain the garden perfectly. She seems to be growing her own food in there, as most of the garden is covered in vegetable patches and a few chickens hop freely through the garden. At the edges there are a few fruit and nut trees scattered. All in all a very peaceful and green world.
Everything outside those twenty meters though, it is a different story. A vast dessert spreads out as far as the eye can see, in which the sun burns so hot that Dain can last no longer than a few hours in there. Alone he can´t even enter the dessert, as there is an invisible Barrier that seperates the garden from the dessert that he can´t breach. Only with the help of Kusari can he move past the barrier. For example if she wants to teach or show him something.
Dain is convinced however that the dessert is not ‘real’, but perhaps more like an illusion. On several occasions he has witnessed birds entering through the barrier, that were not there before. Another thing that he witnessed was that the barrier actually seemed to be moving constantly. Perhaps not on a minute base, but he is certain that sometimes the garden is larger than other days. Recently, after he graduated from the shinigami academy, he was certain that he even saw another row of trees at the far edge of the garden. A theory he has is that the size of the garden might be influenced by his state of mind.
All in all his world is a small oasis in the midst of a most ungiving, scorching dessert.
Power:
Main Power:Kusari´s power is that is can form a white chain made out of Reiatsu. The chain itself it flexible and appears from the tip or the pummel of the Zanpakutou, so Dain tends to use it as a wip: wipping his sword to control the chain. The main goal of the chain is to bind his oponent so Dain can simply slice them up. The chain however is not indestructable and those who are half as strong as he is could cut them with a proper attack.
If he however manages to catch someone completely (for example bind both arms), the chains are extremely hard to break as they have the ability to absorb reiatsu on touch. The absorbtion is minimum and does not benefit Dain, but rather strenghtens the chain. So the more power someone exerts (for example in an attempt to break free), the stronger the chain becomes. Beings much stronger than Dain can overcome that however as their reiatsu would probably increase faster than the chain can strenghten itself.
Main Use: A chain whip extends from the tip of his zanpakutou. The maximum range would be roughly a 100 feet.
Secundary Use: For those cases that an enemy is tring to run, he can form the whip into a lasso to make catching them easier.
Tertiary Use: He extends the whip from the pummel of his blade and grabs that, as Dain throws his sword at his oponent. After the throw he is even able to control it slightly through the chain, like a reverse whip. He uses this technique sparesely though as it would leave him wide open.
Secundary Power: If Dain is really being pushed back he can wrap the chain around his free arm, which will than meld into a gauntlet holding a black templar shield. Special is that if he pours his power into the shield he can increase the size of it at will –to a max. of 3 meters high- to protect himself (and others if they happen to be behind him) from frontal aoe attacks.
The shield and whip can technically be used at the same time, however since they both use his own reiatsu, they would be rather weak. There is however a trick to the shield: it has a distinct advantage against kidou attacks. (or attacks simular to kidou´s, like Cero.) Just like the whip it has the ability to absorb reiatsu, however since it has over 10000% surface area, it can absorb an exponantional amount of reiatsu exponantially quicker.
Note: This works best with kido, as the problem with a sword blow is that there is only a very small surface area.
Secundary Power: Block/Bash/etc. (all standard shield actions, aside from throwing.)
Main Power: Absorb reiatsu from Kidou´s, to replenish Dain´s strenght. There is a drawback though; Dain´s reiatsu can never exceed the maximum in his normal state. It is however impossible to regulate the flow of reiatsu. (Dain does have the basic control of being able to decide whether to absorb reiatsu or not.) If there is too much reiatsu forced into Dain, he will suffer internal damage, to the point where he could actually die as his organs explode/implode. Similar to forcing too much air into a balloon.
Another drawback is that Dain cannot reform the shield if it is being broken in battle. Even more, if the shield if broken while he is also using the whip, the borrowed reiatsu from the shield will not flow back into the whip form.
Zanpakutou:
Appearance: He wields and absolutely standard zanpakuto in terms of lenght and form. The only oddity is that he has had a blood red, star shaped saphire crafted into the pummel.
Type: Kusari is an ice type Zanpakutou.
Shikai: As Dain unleashes Kusari, the sword explodes into a dense cloud of very fine powder, before reforming itself into a lily-white rapier. It is beautiful, slender blade that would befit a nobleman. It is a bit taller than average with 55 inches, yet as it is only 0,9 inches wide. Most remarkable is the weight of merely 1lb. The sides of the blade are laid in with pearls and the grip and hand are made from black Byrellium. Despite the transformation, the red saphire still decorated the pummel of the blade.
As the blade is released it seems to exert clouds white reiatsu, like breath on a very cold winter day. The reiatsu than seems to condensate, causing snow reiatsu to form that gently falls to the ground, where it harmlessly dissapears upon touch. It exerts these clouds in regular intervals, almost making it seem alive. This illusion is enhanced even more by the fact that the more reiatsu is being exerted and how heavier the fighting is, the more frequent it exerts reiatsu. As if the blade itself is running out of breath.

The Story: Dain Sincara was born in Germany as the fifth son of an powerful noble family. Or rather a very elite family, as despite their rich history, extraordinary power/influence and almost immeasurable wealth, they did not bear an official title. Something the family always ignored. Almost from the moment of his birth Dain was trained very strictly to become a representative member of the family. In the morning and afternoon he was strictly being home schooled for 8 till 10 hours, followed by mandatory sports and in the evening he was taught about proper etiquette.
Strangely though was that he was treated differently from the other. Although his brothers and sisters did not have much free time either, none of them was restricted even remotely as he was. The only regular freedom he could recall from his childhood is that every Sunday he was allowed to come down for dinner and than after he could spend half an hour playing with his brothers.
In his early years Dain thought that it perhaps it was because he was not as smart or athletic as his other brothers and sisters. Or perhaps he had done something wrong. Later he formed a different theory though as he noticed that aside from him, everyone in the family seemed to have blond hair. –Well not so much notize, as became old enough to realize it might be significant.- For years he carried this suspicion with him, until one day, during a Sunday dinner he gathered his courage and asked his father whether he was treated like this because of his black hair.
To this day Dain still remembers the reaction of his father. For a split-second it seemed like his fathers face froz, before he smiled friendly while ignoring the question completely. Instead his father reached for the bell and signalled the servants that dinner was ready. At first Dain did not understand as they were still in the middle of dinner. Of course looking back, that should have been a warning sign.
Long story short, Dain was almost beaten to the brink of death that evening and his look on life became rather different. Till than he believed that despite the fact he had no free time and free will, his life was actually quite good. He got fed regularly, went to many events with his family and got to see how the lesser people lived. He was raised to believe those people where truly nothing less than inferior and he had believed that until that point. During his months in the hospital he got to experience the world from a different point of view. Especially the contact with a girl named Franzisca opened his eyes.
In the three years that followed he prepared himself and even managed to secretly keep in contact with her by bribing his servant. He had the servant smuggle in a small, experimental device that could connect to the internet. With it he tried to learn more about the ‘other/real’ world and the more he learned, the more he was drawn to this life of freedoms and possibilities. The other thing he tried to find out more about was his heritage, as he became more and more aware that he was not the same as his brothers and sisters.
When he was 15 he could no longer hide and at the dinner table he asked his father the same question. The response was almost identical to three years ago, but the outcome wasn´t. Having taken a keen interest in martial arts, including boksing and fancing, he quite easily managed to overcome his father.
What happened next is somehow unclear to Dain, as he has no recollection of what happened after he punched his father. The first thing he remembered was climing over the fence that surrounded the estate and running away.
While he ran he wrote Franzisca, on the way picking up the stash of valuables he had hidden there just in case. With it he managed to live and even buy a house together with Franzisca. For a while everything seems to be working out fine and he finally experiences life as it is supposed to be. For the first time he was free to do what he want, to dream about the things he could do, to experience new things everyday. He even joined a regular high school, just for the fun of it.
Sadly though the blissfully happiness did not last nearly as long as he had hoped, as the next year Franzisca announced she was pregnant. Soon she would not be able to work any more and his bag of valuables had been thorouhgly used up for the house and some life experience.
For a few months he dubbed what to do, but in the end the love for Franzisca was big enough that he was willing to swallow his pride and go home to ask his father for help. To his dismay though, he was completely rejected when he got to the estate. At the gate the servants not only refused to open the gate, but they even threathened to call the police if he loitered around. Using all the charm he had, Dain managed to get the servants to get Claus for him, but even as Claus aproached it was clear something was wrong.
It almost seemed to give his big brother a lot of pleasure to explain the lengths to which his father had gone after he ran away. Not only had he completely redone Dain´s room, thrown away his stuff and got rid of all the staff that once dealt with him. He even had all the pictures in the house redone, had several books about there family rewritten and had collected the original prints. Even that had not been enough for their father though as he used their experience to have Dain´s birth zertificate wiped out of existence. After that the man had destroyed every trace of Dain, his medical history, his citizens ship, he had even gone as far as have his name removed from events they once had attended. In the end it had cost their family hundreds of millions of dollars, but his father had succesfully wiped out all the proof Dain existed.
Dain had expected his father to react, but this was worse than he had ever imagined and dishearted he went home to Franzisca. Oddly enough though she did not seem to care at all. She did not care about the fact that they were now very poor, that he was just a commoner, or even less than that as he officially no longer existed. Perhaps it was her unabiding love in him that spurned him on.
With new effort Dain began building himself up. Using some old connections he managed to adopt a new name and even fake a few school certificates, which he used to get a job. It was a low end, clerical job, but at the time he was certain he could turn his luck around. As Naomi is being born though, the first crack appears in that dream. From the moment she is born, Dain loves her with his entire heart and does not even care that he has to quit high school.
It is from that moment though that a series of events started that would eventually lead to his death. The first thing was a recession in the world economy and Dain barely managed not to get fired, in return though he had to give up 30% of his income. To compensate he started working a lot more hours. Fifty hour weeks became frequent and he even often worked during the weekend.
All in all though, he did not believe life was that bad though. He had a loving wife, a beautiful daughter and they could live a normal life. Perhaps they could not afford a vacation, but they had daily food and together they frequently visited parks and zoo´s. The second blow came when Franziska announced she was pregnant again. They discuss their possibilities, but in the end decided they would keep the child. Even if they had to cut back a bit further, they would manage for a couple of years and than once Franziska could work again things would pick up.
After the child was born though the doctors discovered it was not healthy. The baby was born with a rare, slow form of Leukemia. Of course Dain was devastated, but he was not willing to give up either. Taking a second job in the evening and doing odd jobs on the side, he devoted almost all his time to earning enough money to pay the medical bills. At some point he worked a 100 hours a week and in addition tried to help Franziska out with the children and the household. All to no avail though. Despite their best efforts their son kept getting worse and he noticed that over time Franzisca became colder to him, more distant. He knew it was not her fault though. He was barely around and even when he was, he was just a mere shadow of his former self. Over time his spirit was broken. What point where his dreams? His desires? His wishes? All he could do was work, day in day out, while watching his child die and his marriage break down. He did not even have a family anymore. All because he was a nobody that, with no money and absolutely no hope. All he had left was his love for his wife and children, but even that brought him nothing.
Despite all that Franziska stayed with him, but even she could not save Dain. In the end all he could feel was emptiness, more like a robot going through the daily routines, than a human being. In the end all he could do was work himself to death. Rumor has it that he might have helped speed the process up a little bit, after he learned about the life insurance at work and sealing one more independently. If so he has never spoken a word about it to anyone. True or not, the fact is that after his death Franziska got enough money to give Peter the best treatment affordable and would never have to worry about money anymore.
Rise to power: After he died, Dain spend a short year wandering through the rukongai before somehow being scouted by a shinigami. Having nothing better to do he could not think of any reason to reject them. Neither did he have for accepting, but they asked him so they carried to momentum. During his six years in the academy Dain followed the normal path. Turns out he made a good shinigami… yet that was it. He was good, never great or fantastic. He did what was expected of him and developed his skills as needed. During the missions he proved himself to be quite capable and he was allowed to go on practice missions in the real world.
Although he always returned successful and without being seriously injured, he did have a tendency to go missing every time for roughly a day. Upon return he always refused to talk about what happened, but one day an officer actually got clever and ordered him to tell them. Without hesitation Dain simply told them he went to visit the family he had left behind. After having been ordered never to do that again, the issue was dismissed and removed from Dain´s record. As ordered, from that day he never visited his family.
During the years in the academy Dain regained his happiness and self esteem, as he made friends and experienced some success. However nothing he did could restore that empty feeling inside and despite having fun again, the feeling that nothing matters is burned too deeply into his soul.
After six years though, there was a small problem that drove the instructors almost to madness. They simply could not figure out what to do with Dain. He graduated every class with either a B- or a C and showed no real interest in any of the subjects they taught. He had no interest in Kidou, zanpakutou fighting, hakuda, hollow extermination, patrol duty… he did everything with the same emotionless expression on his face, simply going through the motions. In the end they simply let him pass, with the lowest grades in recent Shinigami history, but refused to assign him to a division. They felt a bit like they just kicked a stray puppy back on the streets, but they hoped that this way he might be forced to choose his own path.
