It was generally accepted that everyone had days off every once in a while. Kyosuke was no different, but in this case he was only pretending to be “off the clock†as it were. While back in the division he was building the agency, and updating all the dossiers and other bits of information that had been a bit lacking since the division had gone so long without a captain before him, now he was on earth secretly doing the job. Most travels when it comes to Shinigami were to Karakura, and other parts of Japan. But not so for the young captain.
It had been about 4 decades since he had been to Cuba. Not because of anything wrong with the place, but its not often they let you go get cigars when there are hollows that you need to clean, and Shinigami to watch. It was a different place now, and the sights and sounds of a modern Cuba were a bit more appealing than he initially thought it would be. â€Communists haven’t fully fucked the place it seems.â€[/b] Finding the target would start tomorrow though, for right now he had one goal and that was getting a mob boss level cigar, a drink, and find the hotel he was going to be using as his base.
His usual clothes were tossed away for an update to his guard outfit he had broken back in during his last trip into the nest. His gigai however was the same as always. Blue suit with red accents, his black shoes with a gold buckle tastefully placed like he stepped out of a 60’s Steve McQueen film. His hair was gracefully held out of his face and seemed to shine a bit in the sun as he strolled off the boat that had brought him there. The day was nearing the magic hour, and his hankering for vice was already high. The car was a beautiful crème on honey brown Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner. Despite being four hundred and twenty he was still in his guy in love with cars phase.
The roar to life was that drove the not subtle excitement up from his feet until he was roaring down the road to Havana. The countryside rolls by as he not quite cruises, not quite races down the road. He wasn’t human like the souls that began their lives here, perhaps that was why he so enjoyed the experience of being on Earth like now. A chance to be someone not altogether different than he was, but also not the same. An experience that few would be able to understand. Nobility in Seireitei was sheltered, and despite similar areas of Soul Society, nothing was like this.
The road into Havanna was dotted with small homes, a few random other cars, and of course the bristle of humanity. The city however was different. The sound of music replacing the whipping wind as he puts back the top on this classic convertible. Turn after turn through streets filled with teeming life. As if a man was able to swim with schools of fish. Finally down a not particularly well defined street he sees the building that he once visited the last time he was here. It still looked the same to him.
Walking in it was a bit of a different story. One of those things he always forgets was that on earth it wasn’t normal for people to still be the same as they were after 4 decades, The Old man who shakes his hand as he welcomes Kyo once looked closer to a contemporary of the then Vice Captain. “What type of cigar are you interested in sir?†he says in Spanish. â€A delecatado.†He says with a calm and almost a grin. “I have not sold those to anyone but Universal Exports since I was 20. You must be in a rush to reach the other side.â€
“Hardly, my father once bought one from you, I thought it would be a fitting tribute.†it was a bit of a lie, but how would you explain that you don’t age and want to reminisce about something that to you basically happened 5 years ago, but for a human was almost half a lifetime? “Ah ah this way. What was your father’s name?†â€Minami, Kyosuke Minami.†“Ah he was so young like yourself, I have a picture with him. He bought something around half a ton of delecatados that day. I remember thinking you could smoke forever with that many. He had me keep a four bottles of a then 50 year old rum for when he next returned. Perhaps you would like to take them with you?†â€Oh I’m sure he’ll enjoy getting them, but if you don’t mind I’ll take a glass.â€
“HAHAHA, of course. Why don’t you join me on the balcony and I will have them bring you a cigar and a glass of the rum. It is the perfect time for an afternoon smoke.†â€Sounds like a plan to me.†the two sit and take in a drink while watching the bustle of the city. A couple glasses of rum tonic and lime make their way through each of their system. Laughter like old friends escapes and at one point a game of cards leads to Kyosuke probing the old man for information on his life since his “father†had last visited.
“…that is how I keep young, a cigar in the morning, a drive in the afternoon, and a ride from these young fresh bodies before dinner. Life is simple, and youth is too easily wasted my boy. Enjoy the process and the simplicity of it. Your father once taught me this. And Castro, Kruschev, and Communism hasn’t changed me.†The thought that he had such an effect on the man was a bit moving. But Kyo just nods, taking in the lesson of the effect of the interactions he has on the world. This was the truth of the seemingly immortal Shinigami. The world passed with little time to him, but the effect of something as simple as buying all these cigars 40 years ago was clear.
“Well I have enjoyed all this. But I must make a request I know you can handle now. I need a ton of these. Literally a full ton of these cigars. And I need them delivered to this spot in the next 2 days. I’ll double the cost since they need to be transferred. Do you think they can handle that quick of a turnaround?†“It is not a problem. I had a feeling once you told me who’s son you were that you would want something like that.†â€Great, I need to get to my hotel but I hope we can enjoy another cigar before I must return home. It has been good to see you.†A handshake and an exchange of the delivery location with both smiling like old friends is how the exit occurs. Kyosuke back into that throwback to another era, and the old man to having the factory pack the massive cigar order. Pure onyx black cases lined with blue velvet and cedar separators are filled with the amazingly classic style of cigar.
Lung cancer wasn’t really a worry when you weren’t human. The ride to his hotel was quick and a bit uneventful, his bags come in with the bell hop who gets a better tip than usual. He sits down for just a moment before he hops out of his gigai and tosses a soul candy in. “YO!†the energetic soul candy says as his gigai pops back to life. “What do you need Captain?†â€Really simple honestly. Have something to eat, get a few drinks at the bar, pickup something young and perky for a little adult fun. Whatever you do make sure people see you for as long as possible. I’ll be away for most of the night. Got it?†“Yes sir.†Watching him leave and hearing the elevator Kyo gets to work, his case with a few pieces of gear he needs is placed in the closet of the suite. His hands move with an odd pattern, not a technique with his sword, and it doesn’t seem to be any kidou that is known. Really its just super fast movements to unlock and remove many of the objects he is using.
The first thing to make an appearance is a blue box with the kanji for shadow on the top. He places it inside the ventilation duct for the bathroom. The room is flooded with a warm orange light and then suddenly goes completely black before going back to seemingly normal. In reality the room now seems to be like the room next door to anyone who can see spiritual energy. So long as it isn’t a Shinigami looking for him, no one will be able to realize that the Kyo who will show up is anything other than human. And it masks his massive captain’s reiatsu by distributing it through the building when he is inside.
The rest of the tools get placed into either his pockets or into the luggage and into the closet. He walks out onto the balcony and looks up into the night sky. “If only they knew the truth about the sky.â€[ He thinks as he leaps up into the sky to get his bearing and then back into the throngs of the early evening. Out there somewhere were other beings who would either be hunting him, looking to contact him, or just going to be annoyed by his presence.
Kyosuke to his credit though paid this idea little mind. He had work to do. Learn the city, get the basics down, and see what old contacts for the 6th division were still here was his job. It had once been a city filled with spirits, and his first stop would be an old tavern that was hidden from the sights of men. The man in black had once run it. If he was still alive, then Kyo could use him to help the agency’s network of contacts here on earth. And so not quite at full speed, he moves through the night on foot.
