How long had it been since Hazuki had last stepped over this particular threshold? She had lost track. How many Captain-Commanders ago, then? Ine, Chinda, Fujikagi. And now, the latest addition: Shinoda, Hazuki’s very own handiwork, ironically enough. What was it she had said to Ine? To be permitted to wear a weapon in the confines of the Commander’s office is a great honor reserved for those who have earned it.
Hazuki, it seemed, had done exactly that in the relatively short time since her first arrival, just as she had once speculated she would. They called her Captain now, and Hazuki had to admit there was something strangely amusing about the fact that a girl could magically appear out of nowhere and through sheer brute force assert herself as one of the most influential people in Seireitei. For all those trampled underfoot she could muster no sympathy—Hazuki was accustomed to getting exactly what she wanted, and naturally she wouldn’t have it any other way.
There was some humor, too, in the fact that she found herself once more under the command of a woman named Kasumi, and idly she wondered if it had been the reason for her proposal to Nagisa to have the most junior captain of them all elevated to the highest rank in the Gotei. It had certainly played some role, though she was unable to say just how large. Hazuki had made her peace—more or less, anyway—but she still missed some of the people she had been forced to leave behind. Maybe it showed.
There was nobody in the antechamber preceding the Commander’s office, and since Kasumi was expecting her, Hazuki didn’t bother knocking.
‘Commander,’ she announced curtly as she entered, closing the door softly behind her. No matter how well she felt she knew the girl, no matter how instrumental Hazuki had been in putting her where she now was, there were some habits that died harder than others. She spared the younger woman the details of her delay—the damage done by the unfortunate specimen on Sōkyoku hill had been minor, and at best there had been a few incidental cuts and bruises from shrapnel and a number of cases of fainting due to the overwhelming concentration of spiritual pressure. The only thing that mattered was that by the time Hazuki had left the Hospital, things were running smoothly and the injured—if they could truly be called that—were being tended to.
What Hazuki offered instead was a simple congratulations before she effortlessly transitioned to the real purpose of this meeting.
‘So,’ she began, deciding where best to begin, ‘given that Nagisa is busy with her preparations, I felt I would take the initiative and fill you in on the finer details you may not be aware of since it appears there’s only the three of us now, and your predecessor along with the most senior captain have both gone missing.’
All in all, it was a rather poor state of affairs, but it could certainly have been worse—thankfully, the three young captains had easily averted that particular disaster.
