These should be only core events that somehow shaped your character’s life. Birth, death, what triggered their powers, and things of that sort should be mentioned here. Anything that other characters might want to reference, such as if you were in a previous division at some time, is useful as well. This is not a full timeline, just the highlights of your history.
[ ON THE SURFACE ]
Physical Description: The man known as Asuma Ito is a mess. Not physically. Having been born from an American mother and Japanese father his face looks just foreign enough to be exotic to either nationality. Skin light enough to be mistaken for Caucasian with the facial features of one from Asian descent, a perfect blend of his dual ancestry. He was not tall but neither was he short. Going by build alone he looked unimposing. He was neither overly muscular, unless one saw him without his shirt off, but neither could he be described as skinny. Along with his general demeanor he could be described as solid. From the way he walked confidently, to the way he spoke or looked at another; above all he was sure about whatever he did. Solid.
The most surprising thing about Asuma was not his a little too wide nose, nor the slight pointed curve of his ears. Not even the relatively bushiness and slight downturn of his eyebrows that made him look as if he was constantly slightly irritated. Those slight imperfections were nothing compared to his eyes. His eyes held every emotion he so carefully controlled to keep off his face. They swirled a golden brown whenever he was angry or frustrated; they grew flinty, hard and almost black, uncompromising when whoever or whatever stood in his way. They were liquid brown whenever in the company of people he liked though that was few and far between. The best place to read Asuma and his moods was not his face which he could keep impressively blank even when in severe pain. No. It was his eyes. Were they not the window to the soul?
Spiritual Description: Similar to above, though this focuses on the spiritual presence of your character. This would be how their Reiatsu appears and/or feels when they release it. Typically, Reiatsu can invoke a feeling of sorts and often takes on a ghostly appearance. Reiatsu cannot be touched or molded and simply serves as dramatic effect.
[ BEHIND THE EYES ]
Personality: Asuma was....difficult. Not because he was rude; he could be unfailingly polite, but because his ideals so often clashed with his peers. The prevailing thought was that of no man left behind. An admirable sentiment and one he even reluctantly agreed with if pushed. But only if the mission was completed. The mission came first. It came before his allies and his own life. So long as the mission parameters could be completed there would be no retreat and there would be no surrender. He could concede that when faced with an insurmountable foe that the wisest option would be to retreat and fight another day, but if he could see a weakness he would push forward. Even if one of their own fell in the process, he would leave them behind. And he expected his allies to do the same without fail because why would they quit when he hadn't. But they did quit. He kept pushing. They kept quitting even sooner. At the academy no one could keep up with him those first couple of years, and so they stopped trying to. He kept trying to be a leader and he kept failing until he finally understand why. His impatience was getting the best of him. He wasn't schooling his features into the blank mask he used to be known for. People had followed that mask, believed in it without fail. He had thought he could be himself here. Apparently not.
And so he stopped disagreeing. He stopped pushing. He didn't stop standing out, he had too much pride not to display his abilties to the fullest, but he recognized he was not leader material. He was a follower. He followed orders. And after awhile, without the stress of dealing with the pressures of leading he finally knew what to do. If they would not listen to him then perhaps suggestions would go better. On training exercises when someone went down and they looked to him for directions, as he was still the strongest for all of not being the leader, he would order....suggest the leader fall back and pick them up while he went up ahead alone to complete the mission. Everyone was happy. The leader got the credit for saving someone and completing the mission while Asuma did his duty. He followed his orders. Even if he did have to manipulate the man into completing the mission. That happened far more often than he wished it to.
At times Asuma would affect an air of absentmindedness when dealing with those he did not like. Such as the one who was second in his class. They would constantly pester him. At first Asuma could not tell whether it was a man or a woman. Not because he couldn't tell, but because by the time he recognized what he was doing he had already been unable to look them in the eyes and so they appeared to him as indistinguishable. One week he would refer to them as a man. The next a woman. Then a child. Then an old man. He often wasn't thinking about who was in front of him when he was in this mood. If you wear the mask for so long you eventually become it.
It is interesting to note that Asuma takes advantage of any weakness he sees, whether it be mental or physical. The days of being hungry in Rukongai shaped him to take what he could get and if not and faced with a difficult foe enrage them until they forgot what they came for. This made him an unattractive sparring partner. He would kneel down and throw sand into his opponents eyes, stab his sheath into thier foot, knee his opponent's in the crotch and another methods of dirty fighting. It was effective it was ruthless and it was much frowned down upon. A fact which he couldn't understand. If it was a matter of life and death would you not do everything you could to win? To complete the mission?
Goals & Achievements: It's hard to decide what one's goal in life should be. Asuma had a difficult enough time deciding whether or not studying Kido into the finer aspects where even the slightly more difficult spells refused to work if your reiatsu control was not perfect was worth pursuing. Trying to decide which division he should go into was making him feel an emotion he hadn't felt for a long time. Indecisiveness. He didn't know and he hated not knowing. Detested it in fact. Not so that he could sate his curiosity, but so that he could act with conviction on his path. Every division had a philosophy. A creed. An ideal they stood for. And they all wanted him. He had graduated at the top of his class. He could have left two years early and graduated in four years instead of six but his gut and instinct told him that was a bad idea. He followed his instinct. And the fact that Shinigami and Hollow relations had worsened, although he couldn't fathom how that could be. So he decided not to jump into the fray without thinking. He was sure of his inferiority. At the time he only had a newly awakened shikai and only the vaguest of grasps on the concepts of its abilities. It did not fill him with shame, it was a fact of life. Just as his graduating at the top of his class did not fill him with pride. Well. Only a little.
The glaze over his eyes lifted as he found his feet at taking him to the 2nd Division headquarters. He took in the sight. If he concentrated hard enough he could feel the spiritual pressures of the members scattered throughout, tho he couldn't see them and he couldn't pinpoint there direct location. But he knew they were there. And he knew they were watching him every so often. Gauging him. He felt a strange kinship with this type of organization. The fifth was too straight forward for his liking and while he thought himself intelligent he had no desire to be in the fourth division. Given the nature of his shikia and his...temperament that also ruled out the third. The mere thought of paperwork made sure he stayed well away from the first division. This was his duty. He put one foot in front of the other, his eyes resolute as he made his way forwards to make his intentions known. He was going to put in his application for the second division.
[ GUARDIAN ANGEL ]
Zanpakutō Spirit: Zanpakutō Spirits are the mentors and guides of Shinigami. They serve as the balance to their soul and guides the wielder towards strength. Commonly, Spirits are seen as a Yin to the Shinigami’s Yang, however being direct opposites is not required. The Spirit must allow a different perspective that the Shinigami needs to embrace in order to grow.
Spirits can look like anything and act like anything -- don’t be afraid to bind them to a standard human or wolf. Be as creative as possible, as these are the true expression of your character’s soul. More importantly, Spirits are not friends, nor are they enemies: they are guiders. A relationship with a Spirit should not necessarily start out on good or bad terms, unless you have a reasonable foundation for that conflict or lack thereof.
Inner World: Much like the Spirit, the Inner World is an expression of the soul. It represents how the Shinigami feels about themselves on a subconscious level. Not only that, it is the only place where they can interact with their Spirit and, typically, the Spirit has far more control over this “realm” than the Shinigami themselves.
Power: A brief (1-2 sentences) summary of your power. This only needs to be as complex or as simple as you want it to be, but remember that the full write up belongs in your second post!
Zanpakutō: Most Shinigami have a standard katana as their weapon and, when unreleased, your weapon should fall under that as well. Unless you have a solid reasoning for not having the standard weapon, consider sticking to the basics for this one.
However, your released Zanpakutō should look like something that either represents their Spirit, or the power itself. Either way, feel free to be creative here and use things that might not traditionally be considered a weapon. While nothing can beat a good ol’ fashioned sword, having something that compliments your power is always worth looking into.
[ LEGACY CREATED ]
Origin: Each of these three sections should be at least a full paragraph (5-7 complete sentences). In your origin, you should talk about where your character was born, describe their death (if applicable) and talk about their time in the Rukongai. This should stop right at the part where they develop enough power to be accepted into the Academy.
Rise to Power: Rise to Power should include the Academy and any time you have spent grinding through the rank and file Shinigami events. This would include you unlocking Shikai and most of your notable events in your history. This is where you explain how your character has gotten so strong.
Call to Action: This is where you talk about the event(s) that made your character shift from an NPC to a player character. For whatever reason, they need to be pulled away from the daily grind and put into the spotlight. In this section, you’ll want to highlight that event(s) and justify why your character is they way they are today.
