I may not be an expert, but I think my view on things might be able to help? You see, whilst many people have put up good answers, none of them have-in my opinion-quite reached the core of things. Indeed, there may be some elements of religion, and some of the individuals beliefs, but it cuts deeper than that. The center of the Quincy, in my mind, is this-the refusal to accept the spiritual world. The Quincy exist to eradicate. It is shown in the very basic part of the Quincy nature, the innate ability to completely destroy a soul. Why do I say this also applies to the power? Because think about it. Every Quincy, at some point of time or another, is thrown into the spiritual world very suddenly. This is shown to the Quincy as a problem, as all they can see are bloodthirsty hollows and seemingly corrupt Shinigami. So they start building up their powers and try to find an 'answer' to the 'problem'. And yes, a lot of it has to do with religion, which given the circumstances would make sense. I mean, if you were suddenly told there was an afterlife, you would start getting religious, right? But the core of their powers, the concept, is their solution to the apparent epidemic that-in their eyes-is threatening their livelihoods. For instance, when Ywach was plagued by his weakness (which could be blamed on the spiritual world, or not, but it is still a threat in my books) his solution was to steal all the power and become 'Almighty'. When Haschwalth was faced with a situation where he saw the misfortune caused by the quincy-shinigami war, he developed his 'Balance' to dish every injustice back onto those who caused it. Also, in the case of our 'Balance' Lucas Lightner, he seemingly saw every other race proclaiming themselves above the quincy, so he gained the ability to take on their special powers in order to balance out the scales and show that they are no better than him. It is just my personal thoughts, but I think it might help you with what you didn't get about the powers.
Wait, what am I doing? I shouldn't be helping a Quincy develop his powers, that just makes more work for me...CURSE YOU HINDSIGHT!
