A rainy night probably shouldn’t be the perfect time to go on a walk, yet it was for Alexandra. While dark, purple clouds drifted above the city and mingled with the inky black sky, she pulled the hood some further over her eyes and turned the volume on her iPod slightly higher. The music pleasantly echoed through her mind while she took another turn and crossed one of the smaller bridges, walking away from the Altes Museum. The side of the German Historical Museum was already popping up into view when she decided to take a turn to the right and follow the water. Half through the street she watched another Museum appear; this place was littered with them. She supposed that it was a good thing, they gave people the option to get to know both history and art, if they wanted to of course.
Perhaps I should get a ticket for one of the exhibitions, she briefly wondered while making it under the bridge. Maroon 5 was still filling her ears when the rain stopped splattering across her nose and cheeks because of the concrete construction above her head. Massive blocks of dirty gray protected her from the weather for about ten to fifteen steps, and then she was crossing the street again under the mercy of the open sky. This time she quickened her pace, feeling the first drops reaching the shirt beneath her jacket. There was no need to get a cold, not while being so close to having to make the trip back to Japan.
Ugh, what an awful smell, she shook her head before turning around the corner. It was only then that she realized how much the scent reminded her of .. fire. Stopping in the middle of the road, she turned around to see nothing but an empty, gray street with artificial spots of orange light fighting the night here and there. There was no smoke, no fire, nothing at all that could explain the odd smell which had entered her nostrils just mere moments ago.
Unable to drown her curiosity, the young woman carefully moved a couple of steps back. She sniffed, but didn’t seem to smell the same odor of burnt wood and flesh. The memory of it elicited a shiver from Alexandra, but she didn’t think that she was simply imagining things. No, it had been too real. She still had the aftertaste of it lingering on her tongue.
With a light frown she resumed her walk, paying close attention to her surroundings in an attempt to see whether or not anything was actually burning. Perhaps someone had ruined their late dinner and had opened up a window in order to get rid of the smoke. Yes, it had to be that, she decided while still searching, entirely forgetting about the soaking rain. While her gaze went from window to window she wondered what in the world one had to be baking in order to get such a scent. Shaking her head lightly, she knew that she probably wouldn’t have gotten it past her throat no matter what it would have been. The smell was too strong for it to have been edible.
‘Baby, there you go again, there you go again’
Sneakers hit the pavement when Sasha hurried across the street and into a nearby alley. The shortcut would probably save her from being entirely soaked; she really didn’t want to see whether her iPod would survive being drenched or not. Somewhat hidden between the buildings she hurried while sticking to the left side and jumping over the quickly forming puddles. It was then that she smelled it again, the awful smell was back in its full glory.
What th-?, she coughed.
Once, twice.
Her green eyes blinked rapidly as if that would scare away the fire.
“Hey! Can you smell that?” She shouted when a figure walked past the alley on the other side of the street. They didn’t seem to return, and Sasha made a decision to follow them. If they knew something about it, then perhaps the two could find the cause. In case of people being trapped in one of the surrounding houses someone would have to call the fire department to make sure none of them would suffocate or burn alive.
Nearing her target she suddenly felt like something was wrong. The hairs on the back of her neck came into motion, going further up with every step that she took. With only a dozen steps or so between her and the other woman, the smell had only grown worse.
Ash, gray skin? Was she hurt? Was there a f-
The red eyes, the presence behind them. This thing wasn’t human. This was.. one of them.
Sasha could feel her body tense as the urge to flee or to fight kicked in. If this creature was here then it might have set fire to something, might have hurt one of the innocent people around the area.
“Get out of here! Go back to where you’ve crawled from!” Gesturing with her hand for the figure to leave, she hoped to come across strong and confident. There was nothing about this situation which she liked, but knowing that she didn’t bruise as easily as others did, Sasha decided to try to scare away the potential predator.
“There is nothing for you here!”
