Arteran stood among the trees that bordered a small clearing. At the very center of the clearing was a small, perfectly circular, pond that reflected the night sky so clearly that it looked more like a door leading to the heavens than anything else. On the other side of the pond stood two statues, one of a man and one of a woman, that seemed untouched by the ravages of time. In fact, the entire clearing seemed eerily pristine, as if none of the pollution or corruption of the world had been able to spread past the tree line into the forest.
Arteran had been sent to the Ballyboley Forest as a part of a simple reconnaissance mission. Europe had no shortage of so-called haunted towns, mansions, castles, and forests, and while a large amount of the events that led to their monikers had perfectly mundane explanations a few of them were actually locations with abnormally high concentrations of spiritual activity. The Ballyboley Forest was one such location. As such it was also a hotspot for both hollows and spiritually aware humans, which was why Arteran had been sent there in the first place.
He had spent several hours performing a regular patrol, but eventually he found himself being pulled towards a specific spot. At first he had been wary of the feeling, and had been about to attempt to ignore the feeling, but Umbrum had silently urged him to follow the feeling, so he had allowed himself to be drawn here.
As Arteran observed the clearing he couldn't help but be filled with feelings of happiness, comfort, familiarity,...and loss. Unfortunately Umbrum had refused to divulge why he had told Arteran to follow the feeling, and had remained silent and stoic in the face of Arterans demands for information.
While he was filled with such profound emotion at the sight of the clearing, Arteran still felt unsure about stepping into the clearing itself. It was as if by stepping past the trees he would see something, would find something, that would change him forever and irrevocably. Finally, forcing himself past his feelings of trepidation he began to step forwards..
