Alain didn’t have to wait long for Junko to make the first move. He was still mildly perturbed that she was without a weapon, but the thought quickly vanished from his mind when she employed shunpo to close the distance. It was now apparent that he had completely misjudged the woman’s strength. If the opportunity for sense detection had been available in that moment, he would have realized just how wide the gulf spanned between them. While he seemed to be the faster of the two, he was still unprepared to react to the woman’s movements which placed her at his right side. He immediately pushed off from the firm earth, tossing himself backwards from Junko as he tried to regain separation. Too slow! He braced himself for the open palm strike by rotating his body away from the woman. The maneuver shifted the target slightly towards his lower back. Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough as he both felt and heard the snap of what must have been the lowermost rib on his right side. Merrick’s left eye winced from the pain as he completed a full turn, right hand falling from the hilt of his sword. The momentum of her blow combined with his movement, placed him roughly six feet from the crimson warrior. What do I do?
Junko was clearly a seasoned fighter. Her posture revealed no obvious openings. This was in stark contrast to Alain who hadn’t been involved in a fight prior to enrolling at the academy. Even after joining, he had seen a minimal amount of combat. The art had never really interested him since intellectual pursuits were always far more important. However, this spar was shaping up to be the second recent example which illustrated how truly wrong he had been to neglect the more martial vocations. ”Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose.” Apropos, but where had he heard the quote? He returned the right hand to the hilt and made his move. Merrick darted forward with two long strides and launched a rising diagonal slash aimed at Junko’s right arm. He wondered if his meager strength could incapacitate the limb and slow down further offensive attacks.
