Junko had no issues with making a stop along the way. As such, once she had collected her bag, they set off. While traveling amongst the lower numbered northern districts, they maintained a moderate pace. Alain would have preferred even greater speed, but the business districts were already growing crowded despite the morning hour. Shunpo was an option, but it was probably best to conserve strength until they reached more wide open spaces. “Do you require anything from the shops since we are passing through anyway?” Merrick’s thoughts returned to the pen that he saw earlier. Although he wasn’t in need of a new writing implement, the dove design had spoken to him. If the vendor hadn’t sold the item, then he would consider the purchase upon their return. I bet that she says no. Junko gave the impression of a minimalist nature. Alain supposed he wasn’t too dissimilar. He required little and wanted even less. The one exception was knowledge. His musings left him curious about what his fellow Shinigami might consider important.
Merrick had been making periodic trips to his former home for the last thirty years. Although he used the house for storage, most of these visits were related to the upkeep of the property. Despite being located in the Ninth District, it wasn’t quite close enough to Seireitei to serve as a personal home. This is what Alain liked to tell himself, but deep down he knew he simply wasn’t comfortable staying in the house now that Josephine had passed on. Perhaps his feelings would change one day. Fortunately, some of her oldest friends helped him maintain the abode. This allowed him to visit sparingly, but sooner or later, he would need to assume full responsibility. With any luck, he would make some progress with his investigation during the trip and be one step closer towards honoring his vow to Josephine. Only then would he be able to find peace in the home again. “If you have no interest in browsing the many shops, then we can pick up the pace. In either case, I suspect that we will arrive around lunchtime so you might want to start thinking about a place to eat.”
