⟹ ON THE SURFACE ⟸
Physical Description
Eirik's head is covered with a thick, heavy mess of dirty blonde hair with brown streaks. The bangs reach down just past his eyebrows but are usually pushed off to the left side of his face away from his mask fragment. Under his hair lie his eyes, deep murky pools of hazel. They don't reflect much, seeming instead to suck up light into their greedy depths. Eirik stands just shy of 6 feet, tall for someone of his origin. That inability to reach that "perfect" height is a patr of himself Eirik detests. Even though it is pointless as a spirit, he still checks his height every now and again - hoping one day to have finally reached that point. In terms of weight, Eirik is rather skinny. He is about 145 pounds - and due to his height that means his ribs can seen from under his skin easily and his elbows stick out in bony points on each side. His fingers are long and slender. Overall bony, his isn't an especially comfortable shoulder to rest one's head on.
On the average day, Eirik has a pleasant yet quaint scent. He always enjoyed natural smells, of the forest, a waterfall, a dew-filled grass field, and he likes having himself smell like those things too. His voice has a old Norse accent to it, most closely related to modern Norwegian. It lies slightly lower than average voice deepness. His movements are lazy, with long steps and slower than average gait. He rarely seems to be going anyway in any rush, and prefers to take things slowly. Eirik tends to be the one who'll pass someone something but let go of it before they grab hold. Eirik usually wears a fairly average Arrancar uniform, albeit it with slightly longer coattails and a Napoleon collar. He keeps it pristine, an almost blindingly clean white. Along with the uniform he wears white leather gloves, to cover his hollow hole on the palm of his left hand and for fashion. While rarely or ever able to wear more casual clothes, he would prefer to wear simple colored t-shirts and black jeans.
Mask & Hollow Hole
While a Hollow, Eirik was known as Ganglati. This state had large horns and walked on all fours. When he broke his mask, all that remained was a stump where the right horn was and the part of the mask that stretched down to the bottom of his right cheek much like a helmet's cheek piece. His hollow hole is located on the palm of his left hand, typically hidden underneath one of his gloves.
Spiritual Description
Light green in color, Eirik's Reiatsu has no flashy properties to it. When relaxed like he typically is, it exudes a feeling of lazy pleasure - of lying in bed with a loved one just talking or floating down a lazy river. When released it exudes a slight malaise. It smells faintly of petrichor. All his "energy" looking attacks (Cero, etc.) are light green bordered in black.
⟹ BEHIND THE EYES ⟸
Personality
Eirik is a self-declared "energy-conservative". He doesn't like to expend unnecessary effort, which would be fine if his definition of necessary wasn't so narrow. In other words, he is a lay-about, procrastinator and underachiever all-in-one. Even though this is what defines him, and his Aspect of Death - Sloth - he does not like this. He tries to resist his base nature, much in the same way most Arrancar resist their base impulses and hunger. He does not want to be habitually lazy, and would prefer to be an outgoing person. To this end, he is constantly trying new things in an attempt to find something that inspires him enough to break him out of the cycle he's been stuck in for so long.
In the positive sense he is best defined as laid-back, chill person with an inclination to making friends and staying loyal to them - to the extent an Arrancar can. He enjoys having friends, partially in the hope they'll prod him into getting up and doing something to change his laziness - almost a self-punishment. With his laid-back personality comes a certain kind of acceptance of other races, at least to level of not minding them. Eirik holds no strong convictions, and with that, no strong grudges.
Positive Traits
- Allocentric is not a commonly associated word for Arrancar, but Eirik tends to focus on building as large of a web of contacts as he can. He figures that if he can make sure he has friends in all the right places, he can do anything that he might need to. A "better safe than sorry" approach to having a large group of friends in different groups.
"History doesn't remember self-absorbed fools as anything more than just that."
- Friendly, unlike most Arrancar. Eirik sees no point making unnecessary enemies. For the enemies he already has, he employs a "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" attitude.
"Who couldn't use a few more friends?"
- Loyal like few others, when Eirik decides to follow a leader he follows that person till either they or he die. Getting him to turn his back on his superiors would take a truly great deal of convincing and rewarding.
"Betrayal just isn't my kind of thing."
- Humorous in a lot of ways, Eirik doesn't like to spend all day with a serious and glum look on his face. He'd rather chill with friends and tell jokes than terrorize innocents like most hollows. He can be seen joking fairly often and making heavy situations a little lighter. An odd trait for an Arrancar, but appreciated by many of his associates.
"All these stern faces get awfully boring. What do you get when you drop a piano down a mineshaft? A flat miner! Hah!"
- Teacherly, Eirik likes to share his knowledge. If someone asks for him to teach them something, and he can, he almost always will. He finds it to be a good way to foster relationships and learn more himself. As a consequence of his laissez-faire attitude however, he usually ends up making his student do most of the work in the relationship.
"Plenty of people have taught me, so why not pass on what I've learned?"
Neutral Traits
- Casual, almost to a fault, Eirik doesn't have much patience for formalities and the such. He prefers to take things as easily as he can.
"Ceremonies and formalities belong over there in the Seireitei. Just let me chill right here."
- Experimental. In terms of activities and otherwise, Eirik likes to branch out. If he finds himself doing the same thing over and over he begins to become more and more lazy in it's execution, something he hates. At best this would be open-mindedness, at worst it's fickle.
"Everything I do gets boring quick, so I just gotta keep doing new things."
- Freewheeling. Eirik does not like to submit to the rules of others. He won't rebel from those rules, but he won't enjoy being ordered to follow a certain set of commands. When he can, he prefers to do his own thing.
"Rules are just powerful people's opinions."
- Noncompetitive like few others, he rarely fights to improve his lot. He will fight to maintain what he already has, but unless the reward is truly great he won't compete with others for much.
"Why does everyone feel the need to fight their way to the top? Fighting to stay where I am is already enough for me."
- Stubborn. Eirik doesn't like change and is quite resistant to it. It takes quite a lot of prodding to get to him to do something he doesn't want to do, which is most things. Once he is set in his path it's just as had to move him from that as it is to get him to dedicate himself to something in the first place.
"Changing is a lot of work, and unless you're bringing me a lot of evidence, it just isn't worth the trouble."
Negative Traits
- Annoying is a trait commonly pinned onto Eirik. His oft terrible jokes bore potential friends, and the actually good ones are used far too often. Every kind of person from boss, friend, lover, brother, father, and more have thought this about Eirik. Yet those who have befriended him know this minor point of contention is overridden by his loyalty and friendliness.
"Everyone else seems to think jokes get old so fast, me not so much."
- Cowardly is one word to describe Eirik's tendency to run from battles he thinks he cannot win. But as an Arrancar, he has no issue killing those weaker than him if the feeling comes over him.
"Fight a Shinigami Captain? Hah, I think I know my limits."
- Crass and unwilling to change, Eirik tends to mean well by what he says but doesn't think all that much about how it might affect others.
"I don't mince my words. If you can't handle it, that's your problem."
- Dogmatic, holds very firm beliefs. He does not see democratic societies as effective for ruling. He prefers governments with strong rulers with virtually infinite power over their subjects. However, this might result in him following some pretty corrupt rulers without a second thought.
"Some things are just true, why should I believe anything anyone else has to say?"
- Self-deprecating jokes are the most wonderful in Eirik's mind.
"Joking about myself works well enough to get laughs, why try anything else?"
Goals & Achievements
Eirik is not an ambitious man. He is most comfortable staying right where he is. If there's one thing he dislikes the most, it's responsibility. That said, he doesn't want to fade into obscurity. He would like to attain a higher status and the respect that comes with it, but if that comes with a large amount of responsibility he won't go out of his way to gain it unless it's forcefully thrust upon him. His almost childhood hatred of having to habitually do anything is a typical point of contention between Eirik and his higher-ups. If he had to list one goal, it would be to have the freedom to do whatever it is he feels like doing at any specific point in time.
In terms of achievements, his human life was not necessarily one filled with accolades. He lived a fairly meager life raiding christian monasteries as a viking. He was no king, not a leader of any group. In death, he became more remarkable. He worked his way up the chain as a hollow, albeit it very slowly. It took him 319 years to become a Gillain from a base hollow. 397 years to become an Adjuchas from there, and 210 years to become a Vasto Lorde. Once there, it took 223 to rip off his mask and become a Vasto Lorde. He has only spent 2 years as an Arrancar and holds no special achievements as one.
Views on Shinigami
As an Arrancar's main enemy, Shinigami are not high on Eirik's list of tolerable people. He enjoys to eat their souls the most and considers it a treat when he gets to do so. Yet he doesn't go out of his way to kill Shinigami beyond when he is ordered to. For very high ranked Shinigami, Eirik prefers to attempt and "get on their good side". While not a Shinigami-sympathizer, he sees no benefit in bringing a Captain's fury down on himself.
Views on Hollow-Breeds
Eirik sees his fellow hollows as comrades, but is annoyed by how ambitious the upper echelons seem to be. Also, while he would never say this publicly - he would much prefer to have fellow Arrancar on the throne and as Espada rather than the current Vaizards holding those offices. As for lower hollows, he feels indifferent to them. He views them as mostly weak but has no qualms with working with them.
Views on Humans
Eirik holds no grudges against humans, knowing he once was one. In some ways he pities them and their ever-changing lives. He has no qualms about befriending mortals, but since Quincy and Arrancar don't mix very well he keeps a "professional" relation with them at best. He typically doesn't feed on spiritually aware humans or Quincy.
⟹ GUARDIAN ANGEL ⟸
Aspect of Death
Sloth
First Hollow Power: Languor
Eirik's reishi expands over a large area, causing everything within in it slow down. The effect completely paralyzes low ranking enemies (NPCs) and becomes less constraining and more annoying as the target's power raises compared to Eirik's.
Zanpakuto: Spaken
Eirik's Zanpakuto takes the form of a long halberd. It has a red wooden shaft, topped with the traditional halberd axe-head and spear-head - though the spear part of this halberd is considerably longer than most. Both are made of the traditional bone-white Arrancar material.
⟹ LEGACY CREATED ⟸
Origin
Born in 834 AD in what is now Norway, Eirik's parents were Ulf Magnusson and Sigrid Geirsdottir. He grew up in the area surrounding modern-day Oslo. He had an older brother named Ragnarr Ulfson. Their father Ulf was an early viking, making a living raiding Christian monasteries in England. The spoils were good enough to keep his family well-fed and growing. He taught his sons Ragnarr and Eirik how to fight, Ragnarr with a sword and Ulf with a spear for he was too scared to get close to a sword. Over the years Ragnarr and Eirik would train with each other, beating each other bloody in their training. They often had pointless squabbles with the other village boys over the affection of a girl - Hilde. She had beautiful light blond hair and glowing blue eyes. In the end, Ragnarr ended up with her. This annoyed Eirik, who from then on pestered his older brother constantly and never again went out of his way to try and win anyone's affection.
As a teenager, Eirik began spending more and more time with the village's Gothi. He learned of runes, of religion, and more. He enjoyed these sessions but his father always dragged him away to train on more practical things. Still, Eirik stubbornly went and eventually it became less and less about learning what the Gothi had to teach and more and more about breaking his father's imposed rules. The Gothi, an old man, bitter and cynical taught Eirik many things about he perceived the world to be. Eirik swallowed everything he said up and soon shared the same incorruptible beliefs that the Gothi held. Still, he did learn many "good" things from the old man. After having been taught about herbal medicine and sufficiently prodded, he helped around the village to heal sick people and deliver children. Eirik's father and brother looked poorly upon this, calling him a woman and dragging him off to go raid. Alongside this was hunting, another chore that Eirik was supposed to do. In his rebelliousness, he refused to actually kill any animals when he went out into the forest. Instead, he admired the scents of the forest - of petrichor after a heavy rain, of waterfalls, of all the wonderful earthy scents of the forest. As a consequence of not bringing back any food however, he was entitled to less at the dinner table - leading to his perpetual skinniness.
As Eirik and his brother became adults, the differences between them grew. Ragnarr grew to be 6', just taller than Eirik. This was yet another thing he held over Eirik, who grew to hate his height at 5'11". While certainly not short, Eirik desperately wanted to reach 6 feet tall and stop his brother from lording the height difference above him.
While adept at combat, Eirik detested the raiding for no more reason than his father was a part of it. Over time, he bonded more and more with his fellow raiders and felt comradery with them. He would back them up and they would back him up. As this grew, he began feeling more loyal to the group as a whole. The raiding became more bearable for Eirik, though he preferred to stay at the village. Around this time he became involved with a woman, Astrid Arnedottir. He became accustomed to lazy days at the village with her, running off to the forest to stare at the clouds with her to escape his duties in the village. This went on for years, until one day it was apparent Astrid was pregnant.
In 859 their son Ivar Eirikson was born. In 860 he died of emphysema.
Depressed and looking for something to take the pain away he dedicated himself entirely to raiding. His laziness grew and he developed a habit of passing out drunk in monastery wine cellars. On a raid in 861, he fell asleep in one such cellar and was stabbed in the eye with a candle by a monk who had hiding. Eirik died screaming in pain and clawing at the monk's leg.
He then became a Jibakurei, clinging to the place of his death. Heartbroken, confused, and incensed at himself and the bastard monk who killed him, he refused to move. As the years passed, these convictions passed and all that was left was the fear of the unknown and the lack of ambition to move. He was content to stay where he was, too afraid to see what came after this. And so for 5 years he stayed in the basement of that monastery. Ever so slowly, his chain of fate ate itself. This continued on until the day only a miniscule amount of chain was left. The final link was gone, and with that, Eirik transformed into a Hollow.
Ganglati, the name the Hollow held, spent centuries terrorizing the Anglo-Saxon countryside around the monastery. Ganglati, perhaps even far more than Eirik, was lazy. Unwilling to chase after spirits who ran from him and unwilling to confront any Shinigami who came after him, he spent over 300 years on the brink of starvation. As he slowly ate those who would not run, his growing hunger became deeper and deeper until even the occasional soul could not come close to satiating him. And so, he was inevitably drawn to the home of hollows - Hueco Mundo.
As the void within his heart grew, he began to realize only one other thing could feed him - other Hollows. Thus, he ate. Just like in the human world, his tendencies for minimal eating set in. Like many before him he cannibalized other Hollows, and eventually this led to a feeding frenzy he was a part of. Ganglati knew he was not the strongest Hollow there, and so he hid until only a few were left and they sprung upon them - devouring them and coming out on top despite his cowardly tactics.
Following this feeding, Ganglati emerged evolved. He was now a Gillian, and with that came the first stirrings of Eirik's consciousness awakening. Driven by insatiable hunger and the other Hollows within the Gillian nipping at his heels, Ganglati devoured more and more base Hollows and even other Gillians. Eventually, Eirik's will exerted dominance over the other Hollows and donned his unique mask - similar to a fox's face with 2 large horns.
Rise to Power
Now a Gillian, Eirik's consciousness retained a tiny amount of it's autonomy. Barely able to feel emotion, he reverted to his more primal instincts to control his actions. He spent 395 years as a Gillian, slowly eating more and more. Eirik's conciousnes began to take more and more control over the other Hollows until eventually his continued feasting over the centurues led to his evolution into an Adjuchas.
Rise to Power should include the road up to breaking the hollow mask as well as the logic behind doing that. During this phase is when you would talk about how your character has gotten use to being an Arrancar after being a monster for so long.
Call to Action
This is where you talk about the event(s) that made your character shift from an NPC to a player character. For whatever reason, they need to be pulled away from the daily grind and put into the spotlight. In this section, you’ll want to highlight that event(s) and justify why your character is they way they are today.
⟹ FUTURE PLANS & MORE ⟸
Future Plans
I'm planning to forge Eirik into more of a "support", so ideally, helping out stronger Arrancar during events such as locking down an area by slowing down those within. Obviously, at low Reiatsu levels the AoE for his power wouldn't be more much than say, a house sized circle or perhaps more. But hopefully, at much higher levels it would be the kind of power best suited for invasions and the like to give the Arrancars an upper hand. At such large scales, it'd likely be little more than flavor to the event - relatable to having to "destroy the shield generator" type things in games. But hey, I find that a pretty cool thing for an event. Of course we'd be talking about much farther down the line in that case.
In terms of immediate plans, I want to improve his contacts in the various factions. Not necessarily a "friend", but perhaps someone in every faction who at least doesn't abhor him as much as they do other Arrancar. Not sure on how I'd accomplish that through threading, maybe fight a couple of people and come to a tie to form some kind of mutual respect.
Author's Notes
I picked sloth as the AoD because of the amount of room for character growth it gives me. It might not seem 100% linked into his personality, but I tried my best to link it without it being the sole thing that dictated his personality. I didn't want him to just be a "lazy stoner" stereotype or anything. Just the kind of guy, like me, to procrastinate and put things off until it's already too late. I had a tough time picking an appropriate location for his hollow hole as I couldn't think a particular area of the body symbolical of slothfulness, but I went with the palm of the left hand because the hands are used to do things and slothfulness can be defined as a habitual inclination to not doing anything. So yeah. I went with light green Reiatsu instead of the "traditional" Sloth color of light blue, mostly because I feel the color doesn't match with him all that well.
