Densetsu, Kensei
Unseated/The 'Satsugai'
"It's difficult to forget someone who gave you so much to remember..."
-Satsugai.
[ AT A GLANCE ]
Age / Apparent Age: 419/appears 22
Gender: Male
Height & Weight: 5'10" & 162 lbs
Hair & Eye Color: Pale silver hair, and bright blue eyes.
Positive Traits:
Peaceful: Ever since Kensei was a boy, he has appreciated all life; from the largest creatures to the plants of the earth. In life, he described his time as a samurai as the worst time of his existence, forced to kill fellow people for a cause he did not believe in. He often tends to beds of flowers, and takes time to admire the trees and the grass. A very loving individual, despite his ominous title of 'Satsugai,' that covets all things that live and breathe under the same sun and moon. Even hollows to him are but lost souls, and he sees it as his duty to deliver them from the dark grasp of Hueco Mundo.
Serene: Kensei has never been one to lose his head, even in the heat of battle. He is a calm and calculated individual that acts with refined thought and consideration of all outcomes. Generally, he acts rather indifferent toward others that seems to border on arrogance; though he is a man of high dignity and humility. This highly contrasts to the happy, gun-ho man he once was before the death of his beloved Akane.
Intellectual: Kensei has always fancied himself a scholar, devoting entire portions of his life an un-life to study in the liberal arts, theatre, and even the human anatomy. He speaks softly with complex words, often losing himself in his own conversation with epiphanies of thought. His intelligence is visible in his appearance, his demeanor, his speech and even in the magnetic gaze of his eyes. He cherishes the mind over all things, and practices it's use as much as possible; even going so far as to enter intellectual debates with shinigami from the Department of Research.
Negative Traits:
Indecisive: Despite his rather cold and ominous presence on the battlefield, Satsugai is surprisingly merciful. Though his demeanor towards his opponents is often rather callous, he can sometimes be too merciful when the situation demands none. Because of this, Kensei is prone to over-thinking and over-complicating situations.
Self-reliant: Though it is arguable this could be a positive trait, Kensei often takes matters into his own hands and refuses the assistance of others. He insists the problem can be handled on his own even when the odds are not in his favor. He is a lonely, widowed man ever since the passing of his wife, and refuses to let others become too close to him as a result. In this regard he is quite pitiful, and would rather risk his own life than let someone else assist him.
Melancholy: Unless in the heat of an intellectual debate, it can, at times, be awkward in holding an extended conversation with Kensei. Even in casual conversation, he often talks about his wife and the times he shared with her, which can cause both him and the people in his company to wither in to a state of sorrow. Because of this, Kensei is quite the downer, and people tend to stray from talking to him which only further deepens his loneliness.
Loyalties: The Satsugai holds his loyalties to Soul Society, his captain, and his zanpakuto; of whom he has a deep, uncanny relationship with.

His father is killed on the same day, stabbed relentlessly by a large enraged mob of Kensei's compatriots who witnessed the killing. Kensei is met by a shinigami and sent to Soul Society, but his father is left in the smoldering ruins to turn hollow.
April 20, 1634: Kensei enjoys a rich, noble life in the innermost portions of Rukongai; spending his time as an inventor, a scientist, a poet and artist. He is stricken with a vision of a beautiful woman clad in a scarlet kimono; he paints her, and displays her in his home for all to see. The painting became famous in the Rukongai, and it was named, 'Akane Sakuhana.' ( 咲く花 ): Bright red blooming flower.
January 15, 1638: Kensei enrolls in the shinigami academy, in an attempt to begin his next great learning adventure. He passes his entrance exams with flying colors.
February 1, 1638: Kensei meets a woman classmate, wearing a bright red kimono adorned in designs of lotus blossoms overtop of her uniform. Her beauty was only matched by the painting Kensei had drawn four years prior. He asked her name, and she replied; "Sakuhana, Akane." She was a senior academy student who specialized in Kaido, and would assist Kensei in his studies.

January 15, 1648: Kensei graduates from the academy, with Akane graduating four years prior. The two both enter different divisions but are permitted to live together in the outer portions of Sereitei; as long as their duties are fulfilled.
December 6, 1711: Akane is pregnant.
March 15, 1712: During a routine patrol of west Rukongai, Kensei and Akane's group fell under an ambush from a lone arrancar clad in a garb that made impossible to identify him. Several shinigami were killed in the attack, and Akane was mortally wounded. She passed away along with her unborn child two days later in Sereitei; Kensei sat by her side until her death on March 17. As a parting gift, she pours her remaining reiatsu into her red kimono, and grants it to Kensei and reminds him that she will always be by his side. Kensei falls into a deep depression, and confines himself to his home for four weeks.
October 24, 1749: Kensei encounters the familiar arrancar again in the western Rukongai, and flies into a fit of rage. The two engage in a short skirmish, but Kensei is left wounded and dying as it retreats. He is taken by a passing patrol and survives the encounter with a grievous wound in his chest. On the same night, on what seemed to be his death bed, his Zanpakuto spoke to him for the first time. Kensei makes a full recovery.
August 20, 1752: Kensei encounters the arrancar again, and with the terrifying power of his shikai, fells the creature. It is revealed that the arrancar had the appearance of Kensei's father, that awakened portions of his memory. Kensei kills him, and is absolved from the century-old vendetta.
[ ON THE SURFACE ]
Physical Description:
Long ivory hair pours over his pale, youthful visage and drapes over his shoulders like an amalgamation of thousands of alabaster spider webs. His blue eyes radiate with a deep and powerful glow coupled with a magnetic, thousand-yard gaze. Kensei appears to have no scars, leaving a face of pure, creamy white skin. The only recognizable blemish is the small beauty mark on his bottom left cheek, just below his plump lips. Kensei's jawline had been refined and narrow, but otherwise he was a man of light, young features. He had no facial hair, not even stubble which made him look much younger than he actually was. He always wore a gentle smile when enjoying a normal day, with eyes that seemed as delicate as glass. In combat his eyebrows always furrowed, and he wore a sad frown. His eyes were always filled with indifference and apathy. Though, when he looked directly at someone, it's as if he was looking through them, past them at something behind them that no-one else could see. His mysterious gaze was famous among women in the wealthier Rukongai.
Beneath his face, his skin seemed as if it had never touched the sun. Kensei had been somewhat skinny, and didn't seem to ever gain weight, or even muscle for that matter. Though he was rather toned his physique was otherwise quite sickly. His muscles were far from herculean, and had more of a swimmer's physique rather than one that was bulky or powerful. Though, this didn't bother him, as it was able to allow him to fit through tighter spaces, and move faster. Kensei had a singular scar that spanned across the entirety of his back from upper left down to lower right; a deep wound left to him from the day he confronted the arrancar that killed his late wife. Otherwise his body was blemish-free, pale and smooth like that of a newborn. Kensei is a bit self-conscious about his sickly looks, but it does not stop him from fulfilling his duties. Despite his lithe body, his handsome visage and suave, intellectual manner of speaking compensates for what he lacks in raw physical looks and strength.
Kensei sports a mundane shinigami shihakusho, the most expensive and pristine looking variant available. His clothes from head-to-toe are all seemingly expensive and always clean looking. He takes great care not to dirty his garments due to the time and effort it would take to clean them. Around his neck is a soft ivory scarf that he sashes around his shoulders. Kensei finds it easy to get cold, and thus wears the scarf to help keep him warm. Above his shihakusho is draped a bright, glittering scarlet kimono adorned in ornate, beautiful designs of oriental lotus blossoms. This kimono was his wife's, and he wore it with the belief that as long as he wore it, she was by his side. Because of the kimono's sentimental value, Kensei hardly ever removed it.
Though approachable, at first glance, Kensei was rather callous and reserved. He was a man of high intellect and his hobbies were far different and more complex than others. The way he spoke would sometimes signal red flags in the minds of his acquaintances; being that his speech patterns were both suave and complex almost as to show his intellectual dominance. People didn't like him for this reason, calling him an arrogant smartass behind his back. Kensei enjoyed spending most of his time alone, tending to flowers, reading, and pursuing knowledge in the arts he practiced as hobbies. He was always seen prowling the libraries for old tomes and scrolls, mapping all sorts of things pertaining to the human body and inventing little trinkets in his spare time; occasionally showing them off at parties like parlor tricks. Kensei was well-liked, but his suave, seemingly arrogant facade was what veiled a sad, lonely man.
Spiritual Description: Kensei's reiatsu resembles something like his kimono; a bright, warm crimson that seemed to swirl and dance beautifully around him like a gracefully flurry of spirit. To others, it was soft, calm and welcoming, like the embrace of a lover. In contrast to his rather indifferent and melancholy personality, his spiritual pressure seemed kind and empathetic. It would cling to the reiatsu of others if in a close proximity and seem to intermingle, and dance with it. There had never been a time when this reiatsu ever seemed nefarious; always peaceful, like a calm spring morning.
Upon release, His Reiryoku would always seem to widen and bloom around him like a flower; flourishing like a blossom basking in the sunlight.
[ BEHIND THE EYES ]
Personality: Describe who your character is and how they interact with the world. This doesn’t necessarily include what they like or dislike, unless those opinions have an actual effect on the character. That is to say, including that they like to watch it rain is rather useless, however saying they are a hollow sympathizer is certainly worth mentioning. Take into consideration things that will actually be relevant to the story you’re telling and information other thread partners would want to see out of your character. This is where you justify the things you want to do.
Goals & Achievements: This is where you briefly talk about things your character has done in the past, or things they want to do. Please note that you cannot have had any previous position of notable power (such as lieutenant or captain), however mentioning that you were once a seated officer in a certain division is very relevant information. This is a very good place to start a foundation of your story and make notes on the general direction of where you want to go with your character. Above all else, keep your goals reasonable; it was be a little ludicrous to go out the gate wanting to be Captain Commander. However, feel free to update this as you progress, so players have easy access to your current plans and accomplishments.
[ GUARDIAN ANGEL ]
Zanpakutō Spirit: Zanpakutō Spirits are the mentors and guides of Shinigami. They serve as the balance to their soul and guides the wielder towards strength. Commonly, Spirits are seen as a Yin to the Shinigami’s Yang, however being direct opposites is not required. The Spirit must allow a different perspective that the Shinigami needs to embrace in order to grow.
Spirits can look like anything and act like anything -- don’t be afraid to bind them to a standard human or wolf. Be as creative as possible, as these are the true expression of your character’s soul. More importantly, Spirits are not friends, nor are they enemies: they are guiders. A relationship with a Spirit should not necessarily start out on good or bad terms, unless you have a reasonable foundation for that conflict or lack thereof.
Inner World: Much like the Spirit, the Inner World is an expression of the soul. It represents how the Shinigami feels about themselves on a subconscious level. Not only that, it is the only place where they can interact with their Spirit and, typically, the Spirit has far more control over this “realm” than the Shinigami themselves.
Power: A brief (1-2 sentences) summary of your power. This only needs to be as complex or as simple as you want it to be, but remember that the full write up belongs in your second post!
Zanpakutō: Most Shinigami have a standard katana as their weapon and, when unreleased, your weapon should fall under that as well. Unless you have a solid reasoning for not having the standard weapon, consider sticking to the basics for this one.
However, your released Zanpakutō should look like something that either represents their Spirit, or the power itself. Either way, feel free to be creative here and use things that might not traditionally be considered a weapon. While nothing can beat a good ol’ fashioned sword, having something that compliments your power is always worth looking into.
[ LEGACY CREATED ]
Origin: Each of these three sections should be at least a full paragraph (5-7 complete sentences). In your origin, you should talk about where your character was born, describe their death (if applicable) and talk about their time in the Rukongai. This should stop right at the part where they develop enough power to be accepted into the Academy.
Rise to Power: Rise to Power should include the Academy and any time you have spent grinding through the rank and file Shinigami events. This would include you unlocking Shikai and most of your notable events in your history. This is where you explain how your character has gotten so strong.
Call to Action: This is where you talk about the event(s) that made your character shift from an NPC to a player character. For whatever reason, they need to be pulled away from the daily grind and put into the spotlight. In this section, you’ll want to highlight that event(s) and justify why your character is they way they are today.
