Levi was getting frustrated. He had been experimenting with his serum for weeks, but the secrets of regeneration continued to elude him. No matter how many of these worthless hollows he subjected to his serum, none of them had any beneficial results. Time and time and time again they just grew massive, crippling tumors. The serum did technically work, and they were technically regenerating, but with no rhyme or reason, no control.
Another hollow tried to ambush him from underneath the sand; sending no less than six poison barbed tails, like that of a scorpion, toward Levi. It never even saw the phantom hands that grabbed it’s disgusting appendages and drug it to the surface. It looked like a centipede, except those stingers in the place of legs. Levi smirked when he realized the poor creature had dozens of them, ripe to be torn off and regenerated. How convenient.
He ripped one of the legs off and gave the creature a solid bonk on the head when it started thrashing around. He told it to stay still, not that it would do any good, and japed a syringe into the wound. For a few seconds nothing happened. Then the hollow started thrashing around again. It tool Levi considerable effort to keep it still so that he could observe the wound. He should have brought more sedatives.
After a few seconds the tail came back. Unfortunately it did not stop regenerating when the damage was repaired. Just like so many before, the regenerated limb exploded into a mass of lumpy tumors that was more than triple the size of the original limb. At least he had figured out how to stop the “cancer” for lack of a better term, from spreading to the rest of the body. Eventually the limb stopped growing, and only then did the poor wretch lie still, breathing deeply and letting out a pained moan. Levi had a few different prototypes to try though, and he needed to compare the results. So he tore off another and began the process again. As this one grew into a slightly bigger mass, Levi idly wondered if the solution might simply be lower doses. He would have to try that with the next few, but if the process of administering the serum took too much expertise it would all but defeat the entire purpose anyway. He had a lot of work ahead of him.
