There is an art to devouring souls. One has to be careful to not entirely obliterate a soul’s vessel, while also destroying just enough to prevent escape. As with anything else, there is a balance you see. Unfortunately, it was also a balance Ai had yet to master in her new arrancar form.
She’d spent her morning on one or two unsuccessful ambushes and more than a few accidental incinerations, whoops. Yet still she had hope, for she spotted a hollow taking shelter in a nearby cluster of quartz trees, this time would be different. This time, despite how it pained her, restraint would be the name of the game.
Instead of dashing in ceros blazing with a sonido she opted to creep towards the beast as quietly as she could. Every once in a while the dog-like hollow would look up prompting Ai to freeze and stand stalk still, not even blinking. Her prey would then look away and she’d continue her advance, locking the two beings in a life and death game of red light green light.
Here goes nothing.
A few paces away from her quarry, the little arrancar drew back her fist before thrusting it forward in a pink blur and with a triumphant scream. The bala meant for her breakfast’s head, however, flew wide of its target and smashed into its flank, so much for stealth. The beast took off with a bit of a hitch in its step, but otherwise none the worse for wear.
Uhhhhh, why?!?
Weaving between the black quartz trees, Ai gave chase in earnest with the sound of her sonido filling the desert. Both hunter and hunted matched each other stride for stride making the chase one of endurance. Here and there it would seem to Ai that she had made ground only for the hollow to pick up the pace erasing whatever advantage she had once had. Every now and then she’d even try getting in a few pot shots with a wayward bala, which proved to be just that, wayward.
Ai’s prey committed the first mistake when the chase took a turn for the subterranean. Supported by a vast lattice of quartz trees, the desert was only one level of Heuco Mundo; throughout the desert, there were entrances to the world below and it was through one of these entrances that Ai followed the hollow. The walls closed in leaving space for four or five people to stand side by side and making it a bit more difficult to navigate, but more importantly, it made it much easier for the little arrancar to take aim.
Bright flashes of pink Reiryoku arced down the passageway after the hollow and, for the first time since the initial hit, bit into their target. Sure, a majority of her bala still met nothing more than the cave wall resulting in an awful screeching sound. However, the bala that did hit, hit the beast’s hind legs bringing the chase closer and closer to what Ai hoped to be a conclusion considering the hollow’s slowing pace.
Alas, now the cave itself seemed to conspire against her getting a timely breakfast. The stone corridors became more erratic in their twists and turns while the shafts of light that had thus far lit the way become few and far between. More than a few times Ai lost sight of her prey only to catch a glimpse of it around upon rounding the corner.
A few minutes into her less than successful spelunking expedition, lady luck smiled on Ai. There was, quite literally, a light at the end of the tunnel. Silhouetted in the exit, the hollow appeared to have given up and stopped running. Now was her chance! An adrenaline fueled smile flashed across her small face as she accelerated with into a headlong leap with one more static-filled sonido.
There was no escape this time.
Yes, she’d leap onto her prey and rip its throat out to sate her hunger or, well, she would have. She would have had the hollow not found the strength to move one more time. It dashed off to one side leaving Ai to sail harmlessly through the air and into headfirst into something that did not feel altogether like the rock she thought it to be. No, most rocks don’t usually smell of sulfur.
