"Chie Kira?" Shigure raised his voice incredulously.
His response was mostly a combination of surprise and dismay — the former on the grounds of a patient specifically requiring his attention and the latter a musing for what Chie could possibly have done to warrant the ire of Rania Fujikagi.
Leaving his new office with the same crinkled brow that had been accompanying him as of late, the newly-appointed Third Seat of the Third Division plodded out into the corridor to see to his patient. As he made his way towards the operating theatre, Shigure inspected the briefing notes his aides had prepared for him.
Second degree burns along left side of the body, several breakages and fractures along ribs, puncturing of internals around abdomen...
Even as he swept into the room where the broken body lay, his eyes never strayed too far from the documents on hand as he considered his steps in ensuring the girl's immediate safety. A handful of faithful assistants promptly bowed at their superior's arrival and Shigure returned their greeting with a forced smile. There were also a few Academy students who were most likely observing the procedure as part of their training.
"Now, these are second-degree burns - also known as 'partial thickness burns' - and primarily affect the epidermis and lower layers of skin. While not as severe as third-degree or 'full thickness' burns, our patient's injuries are still exceedingly susceptible to infection." Shigure addressed the other medics and trainees in the room as he disinfected his hands in a nearby basin. A glance at Chie's unconscious form had confirmed his aide's prior observations and while the young Shinigami was generally loath to underestimate circumstances, he also knew he had the apparent luxury of offering insight on the procedure at hand to his subordinates.
"However, as severe these burns may be, her organs are still in greater danger. In fact, internal injuries usually require more immediate attention - even in light of such grievous external damages..."
As he spoke, Shigure brandished a scalpel and, after dousing it in a Kido flame from his fingertip to disinfect the blade further, plunged its tip into a body made blotchy by uneven inkblots of internal bleeding and external charring. A careful incision then opened the blistering skin from the thorax to the abdomen, exposing an expanse of crimson that pulsated as if desperate to remain alive. Sections of stomach and liver were shuddering and fluttering frantically like deflating water balloons as rivulets of blood leaked from within. These traced bloody paths to the pools accumulating in the surrounding regions, appearing like miniature lakes in some hellish, organic landscape.
Upon closer inspection, several dozen bone splinters alongside some larger shards of displaced rib were found embedded deep into the soft tissue. A wave of a hand then summoned Shigure's assistants who duly began extracting the glistening fragments armed with an assortment of specialised instruments. Satisfied with their progress, Shigure then moved onto the crumpled section of ribcage as he began mending its prison-like structure with a glowing hand. The fractures on the surface slowly faded and became uniform once more while more total breakages bonded together as if being welded.
The Chief of Medicine had dealt with more severe injuries and in more pressing circumstances - minus the assistance of colleagues, no less - and had emerged victorious time and time again. Victory in such a case, of course, was ensuring the survival of a patient. In a sense, it was a battle fought against Fate and his interventions would surely prevail as it always had done. Suppressing a smile, he continued mentally addressing the checklist of things he needed to do.
Shigure naturally expected the sight of his patient's blackened, shriveled body to be the source of discomfort for his junior colleagues and, after a sideways glance, confirmed his assumption. There was a time when he, too, winced and cringed at such damage but had since become accustomed to it all: the macabre appearance, the smell -- all part and parcel of his duties as a medic who had seen active service during the battle of Karakura as well as the invasion of the Seireitei.
The charred canvas of skin pulled loosely over the girl's frame had been scrubbed free of soot prior to Shigure arrival and also as an ongoing procedure while he had been working on the more pressing injuries. The only thing left to do now was the repair of the tattered surface.
Given his previous experiences, Shigure had unknowingly acquired a reputation for specialising in the treatment of burns even when he was but a medic. Cero burns had amounted for many of the injuries sustained throughout the two events to have plagued recent memory and the young man whose name aptly translated to 'Timely Rain' had plenty of opportunities to hone his craft.
And here he was -- once again the timely rain tasked with washing away the suffering of those unfortunate enough to have fallen prey to the world's cruelty.
Shifting his positioning to have better access to his patient's left side and to allow his assistants more room to conclude their task at hand, Shigure extended both arms to allow a faint light permeating from his fingertips to simultaneously peel away the damaged skin whilst repairing the lower dermis layers. Waving his fingers like a puppeteer, the strands of eerie light continued to dance over the patient like ribbons caught in the wind.
Another glance at his colleagues confirmed that the patient's organs were now completely free of all shrapnel and that the bleeding had mostly subsided. Taking one arm away from repairing the burned skin, Shigure then briefly closed his eyes, steadied his breath and clenched his fist. The movement prompted the immediate scabbing and sealing over of all gashes present, including the vertical slash across the body that had allowed him to inspect and treat the girl's damaged internals.
"And that concludes our treatment - thank you all for the assistance today." He declared through a glimmer of relief in his eyes. Two nurses then began carefully and tenderly bandaging the girl as Shigure scribbled some notes on a clipboard as part of his write-up. An awed hush fell upon the room as the trainees and other medics present for the procedure bowed in respectful gratitude for the opportunity to work beside and observe the Third Seat. Then, after collectively accompanying the patient's transit to one of the recovery wards, he informed everyone else that their care and supervision of the girl was no longer needed.
Taking a seat beside the peacefully sleeping body of Chie Kira - now former Acting Captain of the Fourth - Shigure took it upon himself to be the vaguely familiar face that she would be waking up to.
