In the character creation process, there's always three questions you ask, who is this character (as a person, history, etc.), how do I want to style their combat (best decided after the next) and what do I want for their power? Now before you read further, do you know where you are? A thread in the USER CREATED GUIDES board, I am NOT staff, I'm not tokiyo/genki, tova/Shun/dignified cucklord (check required if still in possession of title) , saya/bri,or even a grader. Nothing I say is a be all declaration, it is a guide made by a fellow user.
Read over the last bit again, understand? No? Read again? Think I'm being sassy? Great, that means your paying attention. Now, the most common question asked is what should I do for my power? And the almost standard answer is that it should reflect your character. This guide is meant to help you through the process of designing a power.
General (all characters)
Basic quick pointers
It is highly recommended that you create the power last.
Analyze personality and associate it with worldly characteristics.
Find/make a recurring theme that can be applied over several subjects.
Design second power concept first.
Now,regardless of character, they're bound to have a theme surrounding theme, most notably the hollowbreeds and their aspect of death. A character with anger issues would fit an explosive power more than a pacifist would. The key thing is to decide what your character fits, and don't be afraid to branch off from traditional elemental based powers. Earthshaking powers are great and all, but you can do so much more.
A silent ninja would fit shadow powers, such as shadow manipulation or materialization.
A character meant to be hard to get rid of could have phasing powers.
A character who hates powers could very well have a shut down power.
Another key component is what does your character need, what's their driving force? That drive can push a character forwards and pursue evolution in strength and character. A character's drive can have a huge impact on their power, such as a justice seeking character having a binding power. Another note is a characters inner workings, what lies beneath their consciousness? Like sins such as sloth creating a drowsy poison. Each character desires something, such as wealth or protecting another, and with each variation, there's a way to encorporate it into power.
Lastly, a factor that can influence power is history. Characters from specific groups, such as the head of a clan could potentially inherit powers, like at first power they are in training but inherit the sacred weapon at second. A traumatic event can also reflect on powers, like someone who survived a terrible earthquake and/or a hollow attack developing earth based powers. However, most importantly, the motivation for reaching their power, that motivation can reflect back into power, like somebody seeking vengeance having an aggressive power (fire, blood, furious winds, etc.)
However a good power is not based on any of the above alone, want an example, look at a BG vet's character. However for sake of easiness, I'll quickly improvise.
Say we had a Shinigami, his name is Kai. Kai lived his entire life in the Rukongai as a pure soul, always getting the short end of the stick. He tolerates the world, but he himself is a philosopher who found himself the criminal he dislikes, he stole, fought, and did everything to protect the surrogate family he created, them being the only thing keeping him sane and focused. One day he came across a young girl crying in a corner after a riot, separated from her real parents, unable to find them and too young to survive alone. He adopted her into his family as he soon noted difference between the family and her,she was untainted by criminal life. He called her a diamond living among coal. Years later the whole family applied to join the gotei, and the shy young diamond became targeted of bullying and harassment from teachers, seeing his surrogate sister get treated like such angered him. One day a teacher struck her, Kai immediately reached for his blade as he heard his zanpakutos name and called it out, casting his blood into a weapon as he aimed for the teachers.
Nothing fancy like an app,but drift his he's zanpakuto is hemokenetic (blood manipulation) which stems from deep psychological and moral issues. He was raised under barbaric rules, meaning someone made one of his own bleed, he seeks equal payback with interest. Another thing of note is that he can only manipulate his own blood, which can be interpreted as a sign of self punishment.
Shinigami/Arrancar:
Create second release first and de-evolve into first release.
Customize zanpakuto.
Release counts.
Whether your a shini, an arrancar,or Jian's fellow substitute, you all use a zanpakuto. A zanpakuto's sealed state is as important as its released for aesthetics can reflect a character, especially what form a zanpakuto takes releases and sealed. Any zanpakuto can take any base form, not just a sword, but it may reflect on a character. Like a shield for a zanpakuto might reflect that the wielder is defensive (and the writer loves Captain America) while a battering ram, albeit overkill for a sealed form (even for an arrancar) might hint to aggression issues.
A helpful hint for designing a second release, is to design it first before first so you can back track to first, most people do this with arrancar anyways, imagining a ressurecion and simply redux the power and remove the transformation. With bankai, it is less simple but ideally the same process.
Hollows/Others:
Alright, so your not a shinigami, odds are you follow a different pattern. Many cases where when you reach second power, it can overwrite your first, like a completed fullbring over incomplete. Hollows evolve over time, and Quincy, still can't explain that. Humans either develop new abilities based on their old ones or evolve their current one.
Hollows go through the evolutionary line all the way to adjuachas and vasto Lords at prestige, powers advancing and building on one another.
remember, this is player created, staff did not sanction this,do not treat this like the bible of BG powers.
