Merrick marched through the corridors of the Seireitei General Hospital. He was in his third hour of an early morning shift and it hadn’t been a busy day thus far. Other than a single procedure of full leg restoration where he observed and assisted, his time had been spent on either paperwork or private study and research. At the moment, he was reading through the latest reports before filing them in their appropriate locations. For most Shinigami assigned to the hospital, paperwork was the worst part of the job and widely hated. Alain’s opinion on the topic differed. Of course it could be a fruitless venture at times, but he enjoyed being able to read reports and see what kinds of cases were being handled. Interesting incidents had the potential to assist or generate private research. Even if these occurrences were rare, they were worth his investment of time. In fact, it had been a similar situation which had put him back on the trail of the mysterious Rukongai illness.
Alain was pondering the latest reports as well as his most recent meeting with the chief when one of the senior members at the hospital broke his reverie. He wasn’t fond of the disruption, but this was one of the drawbacks of the job. More like a necessary evil. In his head, he placed an emphasis on the evil. Merrick disliked being pulled away from his own work. This was probably due to the fact that he always considered his pursuits more important. So after a brief exchange with his duty shift boss, he was given possession of a patient file and tasked with conducting a routine check-up. Alain remained sitting behind his desk arranging papers and filing reports while he summoned the self-discipline to carry out his new orders. Unable to delay further, he rose from his comfy chair and began walking towards the patient’s room. Along the way, he opened and scanned the file. Merrick was convinced that the check-up should only take a few minutes of his time and then he would be back to the important stuff.
When he arrived at the room of Yingfeng Li, he found the door halfway open. True to form, Merrick didn’t bother knocking as he slid inside, barring the entrance behind him. Likewise, he didn’t speak immediately, but continued to read the man’s file. When Alain finally looked up, he found the patient sitting on the bed. The guy looked to be in his twenties, but the actual age wasn’t provided in the report. Although he was seated, Merrick suspected that he was good bit shorter than himself and certainly smaller in terms of physical size. The Third Division Shinigami didn’t consider himself physically imposing, but this fellow was even less impressive in that regard. It rose the question, did size matter. Alain couldn’t have cared less. He merely wanted to get back to the comfort of his reports. After a deep breath, he was ready to perform his task. “I have been ordered to perform a routine check-up. Provide me with the details of what happened and what has been done thus far by the medical staff.”
