A day off. Shinsei had finally been given a day off which he hadn't filled with tedious tasks like he usually did would. This time was different, however. He'd chosen to leave his day free of activities. He figured it was about time he enjoyed the bit of time he had between work and everything that had been popping up in his life recently. From the battles to the numerous encounters with strangers. It was about time Shinsei took a load off and did something he hadn't done in a while. He was going to visit his long time friend and adoptive father, Yoshan Kawanagi.
The walk from his living quarters all the way to Rukongai's West District was a tad long but he didn't mind it much. It gave him time to think about everything that had happened up to this point. A point which he never thought he would reach. From what he could recall, this whole movement that landed him in this position started with his best friend, Turen. The fated day that reunited the two was more than a day spent with friends. No, it was much more than that. It was the day Shinsei remembered what it was like having friends. If it weren't for his zanpakuto spirit's intervention, he probably would've avoided spending any time with Turen, and would've simply said his hellos and goodbyes. He's sure Turen would've understood why he'd so that, but he was glad he didn't have to know. Their scuffle atop of Little Sokyoku proved to be more fun than progressive. It showed just how much Turen valued his friendship with Shinsei. It also made Shinsei aware of just how much more he should care about the people he saw as friends. Not that he didn't, it was just the ways in which he showed it. He was never the best at expressing that kind of stuff. Turen was much more lax and easy going. If anyone were to get the ball rolling for Shinsei, it would be Turen nine times out of ten. He had that effect on people. Even Shinsei at times.
Now entering Rukongai, Shinsei could faintly remember his first time seeing Seireitei from this side of the wall surrounding it. The wall towered over the buildings in Rukongai by a couple stories. It was massive, at least much more so when Shinsei had first seen it as a child. His first time setting his eyes upon the wall was intimidating to say the least. He felt so small compared to it. He'd always wondered what was on the other side, what wonders would await him if he ever managed to get to the other side. Of course, it was not until after he'd met Yoshan that he would truly understand what the wall stood for. Yoshan had been alive for far longer than Shinsei could imagine being, and had witnessed much of Soul Society's history. Much of this history he would teach to Shinsei in order to help him better understand how Soul Society functioned in accordance to the world. One day, while Shinsei had accompanied Yoshan in delivering some fresh product to a wealthy buyer, they'd traveled along the outskirts of Rukongai closest to Seireitei. It was there that Shinsei had seen the wall up close for the second time in his life, and where light had been shed on the mystery surrounding it. Yoshan told Shinsei of the powerful beings known as Shinigami that lived beyond the wall. Shinsei had seen shinigami growing up, but he never thought much of them beyond what they looked like. Hearing tales of incredible shingami that possessed power and magic the likes of which no one could dream...it seemed like one of the fairy tales Shinsei's mother would tell him when she was still alive. It even had it's own share of monsters, the hollow. Creatures that preyed on souls like his own, devouring them to satiate their own endless hunger.
It was quite a story, really. But it was a story none the less. Now, Shinsei had a much better idea of how life was on the other side of the wall. The extravagance of Yoshan's tales lacked a bit when it came to the real Seireitei, but the information was still solid. There were powerful warriors, ferocious monsters, and magic. There was also technology, code of conduct, and bloodshed. The parts of the story that don't sound as intriguing. The things that separated the shinigami from their story time counterparts. As much as he would've wanted to be as a kid, Shinsei knew that he was no knight in shinning armor.
