[ ON THE SURFACE ]
Physical Description: Before going any further, Azuma's unique eye and hair color must be addressed. While his hair is neck-length and dyed, Azuma's eyes changed from hazel to their current pinkish-red color the day that his family was killed. It is likely that this is a very rare incidence of a phenomenon that occurs in people who have experience immense trauma: they have such a powerful emotional response to something that their body experiences a physical change. For Azuma, this was the change in his eye color. It is also worth mentioning that the color of his eyes is actually very similar to what had been the color of his late sister's room. Next, Azuma's clothes are worth noting, though they aren't anything spectacular like his eyes. He chooses to wear sweatpants and other types of soft, loose clothing more than often, including hoodies, beanies, and flannel shirts. This is more of a personal choice than anything, as Azuma likes to be comfortable more than anything. Finally, as for the man himself, Azuma has relatively broad shoulders, and has a lean and tall build, absent of visible muscle for the most part. The majority of his features are those commonly found among the Japanese (like his small nose), with his German heritage showing only slightly in his pale skin tone and under-defined jaw line. When it comes to his voice, though it is rarely used when not around friends, it sounds sort of lighter, almost floaty-sounding: imagine a cloud, but speaking. His demeanor is far from intimidating, and his posture is much like the man himself: relaxed. Finally, the last thing worth noting is that Azuma, when not in a conversation with a friend, almost always can be found with his headphones on, music of some kind playing on high volume.
Spiritual Description: Azuma's reiatsu tends to leak out from him when it is released, crawling outwards from his body as a mint colored mist. Following the suit set by it's color, the mist smells and tastes of mint as well. In terms of feeling, there is little to mention, as Azuma's energy is of a rather benign nature. It tends to give people a feeling that puts them at ease, but other than that, there is very little about it worth mentioning.
[ BEHIND THE EYES ]
Personality: Azuma, put simply, is a highly laid-back person, or at least a person who puts up a good laid back front. Whenever he can, he'll go out of his way to get some snooze time in, or to just relax in general. However, deep down, this is really just a coping mechanism he developed to lessen the emotional impact the rather tragic events of his life had on him. From his early teenage years, he has been taking care of his mother single-handed, and her depression and somewhat psychotic nature eventually got to him. Now, Azuma refrains from too much social interaction, or at least chooses his relationships carefully, as he worries that every connection he makes will be severed through the inescapable void of death. Another coping mechanism he has developed is his tendency to tell lies: he's uncomfortable with who he is in the first place, so if a tall tale needs to be told for the sake of making a story more believable or for any other reason, then Azuma has no issue with this. Equally related to his relaxed nature in specific is his careless nature: this one is a no-brainer. Sometimes, Azuma relaxes a little too much: relaxation is much like a drug to him, it turns off his emotions for a while, things he's usually quite glad to be rid of. Unfortunately, this can lead to reckless behavior.
At the center of all of his flaws is an emotional self-centered-ness. Instead of trying to help his mom through her depression, he shut himself out, discovering his own power and using it on himself to literally shut off his emotions. This kind of thing happens a lot: instead of focusing on helping others like he should, Azuma will distance himself in a tense situation, because he worries that he cannot cope with the intensity of the situation. If he cares for you, yeah, he'll let you know, but if you start having emotional issues, chances are he'll space out and run away till' you've calmed down.
Despite all of his flaws and quirks, Azuma is at heart, trying to be a good person. If he isn't focusing on something to do with himself and you manage to become friends or even acquaintances with him, he can be a very interesting and all around nice guy to talk to. He is respectful of the beliefs and choices of others regardless of his own, and in complete adverse to his sometimes physically careless nature, Azuma is emotionally very empathetic and caring, as he has gone through his fair share of emotional trauma during his life and is thus able to relate to those going through similar experiences. Additionally, as an advantage of his calm and relaxed nature, Azuma tends to be able to keep his cool extraordinarily well, even in tense situations.
Goals & Achievements: Azuma has only two goals in life. The first is to find the ringleader of the group of shinigami who killed his family, and to kill them. The second is to find a cure for his mother's mysterious illness and make her experience happiness one last time before she passes on. His only notable life achievement is his successful production of a good selling young adult clothing line... and escaping four shinigami's assault with his and his mother's lives intact.
[ GUARDIAN ANGEL ]
Quincy Cross: Azuma's Quincy Cross is a silver signet ring he wears on his right hand. It is decorated with a unique rose petal pattern engraved into the band. The petals begin to glow when Azuma is channeling reiryoku for any reason.
Power: Azuma has the power to mark anything he touches physically or spiritually with a symbol that causes enhanced endorphin release, causing them to relax, and eventually enter a comatose state.
Spirit Weapon: Azuma's weapon manifests itself as a glowing blue miniature cannon barrel that surrounds his arm. Its projectiles can be fired either as blunt, wave-like blasts of spiritual energy, or as a sort of laser-lance, which deals a more piercing type of damage.
[ LEGACY CREATED ]
Origin: Azuma was born in Kyoto to a young couple who had been married in the traditional Japanese: without care for the participant's feelings, and only for the sake of familial value. Luckily, the pair did actually feel for each other, and thus, Azuma was created. From an early age, he was inducted into the way of the Kinnosuke Quincy: they were a far more passive clan, who took a less invasive approach toward their work, and did not collide with the shinigami morally nearly as much. Azuma displayed an unusual level of skill when it came to Reishi Manipulation, especially for his age, and by the age of five, he had already materialized his own personal spirit weapon. It was around this time that his younger brother was born, and unlike many older brothers, Azuma actually enjoyed the company of his younger sibling and tended to help his parents out with him however he could. For a while, you could truly say that Azuma had a perfect life. He had loving parents, a family that respected life and the environment, and a very normal and stunt-free schooling.
This held strong well into Azuma's second decade of life, and reached its peak around the time his second sibling, a baby girl, was born. The love that the young Azuma felt for his family doubled, tripled, almost instantly. He felt the need to protect his sister, to hide her from the world that he was now learning was not as perfect as the rose tinted glasses of childhood made it seem. And so, for nearly two years, he did to the best of his ability. Perfection only lasts for so long though...
Rise to Power: They came in the night, with torches and lighters being the first things to touch the family's compound. A field mistake had led to the Kinnosuke family attracting some unwanted attention from the local group of patrolling shinigami: it turned out that despite their usually non-aggressive (toward shinigami) practices, these shinigami had a special hatred for Quincy in general. Thus, the worst day of Azuma's life began to unfold, starting with him waking up to the screams of his brother, who was engaged in a desperate fight for his life. Alas, he stood no chance, and was practically torn apart by the group. Azuma's father was next: despite being a powerful Quincy and master of reishi manipulation, he soon fell to the one weakness he had in the situation: numbers. He was fighting four other people, and even fueled with the energy of his burning desire to avenge his child, the man could not take down all four with him. Two of the shinigami lost their lives to Azuma's father, and it was without a doubt deserved, because what came next was no short of horrifying. His mother now breaking down in tears, Azuma had to make a choice. Leap into the burning house and risk forfeiting his own life for nothing to go grab his sister, or escape with his mother. This was the hardest choice he had ever made and ever would make... and without a doubt, there was no right answer. Yet, he was only 14, and maybe it was his frightened state that kept him from taking that risk. Picking up his mother, Azuma began to run away as far and fast as he could: trying to look forwards, the last thing Azuma heard that night besides his mothers and his own sobs was an ear-piercing shriek. As soon as the sound faded, Azuma found himself on his knees, silently praying to himself, hoping that maybe, just maybe, this was some twisted nightmare. Yet, it was not: it was far too real.
That was when it happened: out of nowhere, a pair of glowing green runes appeared on the palms of his hands, suddenly causing the tears to slow their assault, and eventually stop. He was confused, yet almost at peace: it was like a calm before the storm, except the storm had passed already. Unsure of what to make of this, he slowly became almost addicted to using these runes and their calming effects. It was only later that Azuma would learn that they were his own unique ability, but in all honesty, the semantics and specifics of the circumstance didn't matter to him. He had found a way out of all of his guilt and self-hatred, and while it was a crutch, he couldn't help but lean on it.
Call to Action: Azuma spent his next two years doing a lot of thinking. He would go out once in a while in the hopes of meeting somebody he could actually talk to, but his efforts were rather futile in terms of yield. What he really spent his time on was finding hobbies: anything to distance his mind from his highly troubled mother and his own highly troubled self. Among these habits and hobbies was designing clothes for the youth of Japan, particularly younger teenagers. Now, after the death of most of their family, the Azuma and his mother hadn't had much to live off of, but they had gotten by, living in a small apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo, but, by a stroke of luck, one of Azuma's clothing lines actually picked up steam and went into mass production, resulting in him receiving a rather hefty stream of income. With this new money, he moved his mother and himself into an apartment in downtown Tokyo, closer to the mental health clinics she so frequently needed to visit. Azuma did what he could, but even his own abilities could only do so much for somebody so unbelievably traumatized. Over time, Azuma acclimatized to the city lifestyle, and towards the beginning of his adult life, a turning point came where he had started to spend more time out of the house than in it, his emotional distance from his mother growing ever larger. Eventually, he realized this, and decided that he needed to dedicate more time to caring for her, but alas, that was right around when things got even worse. His mother's health took a plunge, and for a while, she was going in and out of the hospital. By the time they allowed her home, Azuma had already realized that even the best doctors in Japan had no clue what was going on with her body, and that she would likely pass on in the coming months.
He wouldn't let that happen: no matter how distanced he had gotten, Azuma refused to watch another one of his family members die without him being able to do anything. So, deciding to take his job as a Quincy a little more seriously, Azuma took the initiative to fly to Germany, looking for the head of the Quincy Order, the Queen, according to the belated but still somewhat recent news he had received. Hopefully there, he would find a cure for his mother's illness in the form of a healer or something, as well as another purpose to pull his head out of the dark places it wandered off to when left unchecked.
It was sad though. The boy would soon learn that there was no cure for a broken heart.
