Merrick’s reasons for calling upon Fifth Division were two-fold. First, he wanted to speak with Junko in regards to the ramifications of their Rukongai excursion. Second, he wished to seek further zanjutsu instruction after his first teacher expressed feeling unqualified. The former was the more important of the two tasks, but neither were pressing matters. Nevertheless, he found himself roaming the grounds of Fifth in search of the red-haired warrior. This was now his fourth or fifth trip to the Infantry Fighting Force’s domain. The experiences left him feeling reasonably well acquainted with the area. Reaching into his robes, he retrieved a familiar notebook which contained a hastily sketched map that he made months ago during his first visit.
Where to begin? Given what he knew about the woman, she could have been in any number of places. He eventually settled on an outward spiral search pattern starting at the training center. If he recalled correctly, the large facility was broken down into at least five main areas, each tailored to a different Shinigami art. As he passed through firing ranges for kidou, martial arts and zanjutsu halls, obstacle courses for shunpo, rooms for weight training, and even a pool, he was once again struck by how better equipped the division was in comparison to his own. Within each unique section he asked one or two members of the squad if they had seen Junko. The numerous negative responses made it clear that she was elsewhere.
The next stop was the dining hall, a location which he wouldn’t have expected to find her after their initial meeting. However, after seeing the relish by which she ate meals, he now had the place very high on the list of places to find Junko. Upon entering the building, he was surprised by its small size. If the division employed as many Shinigami as he suspected, then this facility seemed wholly inadequate. However, the size and its wide open design made it easy to see that Junko wasn’t there either. Without a moment’s delay, he was out the door and moving to the next buildings. These included Officer and Command quarters. Since she wasn’t an officer and any officers were likely busy, he bypassed their structures altogether.
This left only a few other areas to search and most of those were off limits to non-Fifth Division members. First, he stopped by the barracks and asked a female member to check the room of his fellow Shinigami. Again, she wasn’t present. Finally, he made his way into the underground training facility where he received his zanjutsu lesson from Kirigaya. As he descended the last set of stairs, he could see a number of one on one spars taking place, but none of the participants had crimson hair. Why didn’t I make arrangements beforehand? He berated himself for the uncharacteristic display of spontaneity. Quickly ascending the stairs into the daylight, he found himself pondering what to do prior to his next medic shift.
With a few more hours to spare before work, Merrick decided to take a walk. It was an opportunity to explore areas of Fifth Division which he had yet to see. So he began by hunting for the perimeter of the territory, believing them to be the most secluded. He wasn’t looking for anything in particular. He merely needed some time alone with his thoughts and this seemed to be the quickest way. Alain had likely traversed half of the squad’s circumference when he stumbled across a stand of oak trees. Moments later, his sixth sense began to tingle. Someone was emitting a fair amount of spiritual energy nearby. At least he guessed that it was nearby given his limited detection skills. Merrick wouldn’t have gone out of his way to locate the source, but he was going to pass it if he continued along the outer edge of the area. Within another few minutes, the trees gave way to a small clearing where he a woman was practicing her swordsmanship near a pond. This was hardly an unexpected sight given he was within Fifth Division’s realm. He was about to turn and leave when he saw the woman’s weapon change form. That is interesting. He grabbed the notebook from within his robes a second time and leaned against a nearby tree to observe. If he was lucky, perhaps he would gain some insight into his own powers.
