[ ON THE SURFACE ]
Physical Description:
Setsuna's hair is rather short, cutting off at her neck; a short, layered bob with long bangs. Her startlingly bright eyes are a focal point being an unusual fusion, of pale azure and ocean green albeit her long fringe often obscures them making it difficult to see. She has a button like nose, pale pink lips with a small mole just below. Her figure is that of someone who trains regularly without bulking up, Setsuna possesses a lithe frame, toned and limber. Her gait is quick and measured and her head is often bowed low along with her gaze. When she speaks, it is often in short sentences with her rather muted voice. Setsuna prefers to dress in dark clothing. If she is not outfitted in her standard Shinigami uniform, she will often be seen wearing black dresses, notably always wearing a black headband that once used to belong to her mother.
Spiritual Description:
Setsuna's Reiatsu is a near opaque midnight blue hue. When released, it slowly permeates from her body, enveloping her and dyeing the surroundings with a heavy, suffocating feeling of emptiness and isolation, a pressure that appears to affect the inside as opposed to a physical pressure. It is the result of her life experiences staining over the canvas that is her spiritual pressure.
[ BEHIND THE EYES ]
Personality:
Setsuna is a quiet, introverted individual. Whilst she can communicate properly with others, she is difficult to interact with on a personal level as she is socially awkward. Due to the lack of friendly interactions and the amount of rejection and hostility in the past, she is generally unwilling to socialise beyond what is necessary both when carrying out her duties as a Shinigami and during her free time. There are only a select few people who she actively engages with although this is something she wants deep down. She is usually distrusting of people's motives and this is why it is difficult for others to form close bonds and significant ties with her. She is not a fan of attention and does not like to be put under the spotlight as this makes her feel uncomfortable. Being born to a noble family yet lacking the vast majority of the privileges afforded to them has left her with a bad taste in her mouth and she tends to subconsciously dislike members of such family’s both because of a jealous longing and because of the attitudes of those she’s interacted with.
Despite all this, she does like to help others that she can relate with, people with similar circumstances to herself and those who are stuck in the underbelly of society. Setsuna is quite open-minded and she has a fascination with the world around her due to her perceived trappings over her youth. The prospects of exploring new territory, uncharted by her, especially outside of Seiteirei and even Soul Society as a whole is as much exciting as it is daunting.
Goals & Achievements:
Goals //
Setsuna’s goals and desires can be considered both loose and fluid. She does not possess any strong drives or desires except for the broad want of ‘freedom’. The freedom she refers to largely involves escaping the shadow of her family that see her as a stain upon their honour, a mistake and a burden to them. Proving herself is something that she wants to do for herself, her departed mother, her father and not the rest of her family. She does not seek their approval but instead to show that despite what they think, despite her mother’s low status, despite the absence of affection, she can still rise above them all.
With that in mind, it ties into her love of swordplay. What was initially an escape became a passion and from that it became a target. A goal to reach the pinnacle with the blade in her hand. She possesses the spirit of a true swordswoman and will eventually rise above everyone else in her family via this route. Whilst she currently lacks leadership qualities by taking her skill in that field to the zenith it would give her the qualifications to look down at her family that prides themselves on their martial qualities.
Achievements//
[ GUARDIAN ANGEL ]
恋人の 抱く – Lover’s Embrace (Koibito no Daku)
Zanpakutō Spirit:
Setsuna’s Zanpakuto spirit is incredibly similar to herself in appearance. Koibito no Daku is slightly taller, both have the same shimmering silver like hair albeit Koibito no Daku’s longer. They share the same startlingly luminescent eyes, eye shape and their facial features are near identical to the point that if they were compared side by side, one would assume that they were twins.
She wears a sleeveless black dress, cutting off just above the knee and knee-high black boots. Materialised at her will, she wields a blade identical to Setsuna as well as a much larger blade, abnormally thick and hefty, though Setsuna has never seen her use it to date.
Part of her soul was born before Setsuna. Her mother’s fervent desire to love, protect and cherish her child at the very end was realised as part of her soul merged with her unborn child’s and it manifested itself as part of her child’s Zanpakuto spirit. It is for this reason that she has always been an empathetic spirit that has less of a desire to instil power into Setsuna but instead wishes to protect her both from physical harm and as emotional support.
As Setsuna’s guide she aims to strengthen to weakest parts of her so most her efforts revolve around her mental attributes as these are what currently hold her back the most.
Inner World:
Setsuna's inner world is an expression of a freedom, an open expanse of nature in all summer's glory. Lush trees and greenery, colourful flowers and fauna, clear rivers and streams, rolling hills and flat plains. A bright cloudless sky. Life is abundant in the inner world. The sound of animals in the sky and on the ground, insects working away and fish swimming in the water are the music of the world. In here 'Tsuna' dwells come both day and night.
Power:
Koibito no Daku’s power is one that affects space or more accurately, a power that ignores space. It allows for Setsuna’s katana to ignore the space between two points allowing her to strike or defend despite the location being out of her physical reach. It is a localised effect, however, not an all-encompassing power. It is only the blade itself that can ignore space and it cannot link with space another living being currently occupies. It also emits a somewhat subtle, yet pleasant scent that draws people's attention to her which became especially notable when under the influence of her Reiatsu.
Zanpakutō:
Setsuna’s Zanpakuto is a long katana with a white ‘tsuka ito’. The centre of the ‘tsuba’ is silver in colour and has a simple circular design. The ‘tsuka’ is long enough to be held with two hands comfortably with a silver ‘kashira’ which is black at the very bottom. The ‘saya’ is also white with black coloured ‘sageo’ keeping it tied securely to her hip.
Her released Zanpakuto looks near identical to the sealed form. The only visual difference is that a long silver tassel extends from the hilt which wraps around the arm wielding the Zanpakuto. It is flexible but durable enough to receive strikes from a blade. It can be manipulated through her will and can be used in a variety of ways.
[ LEGACY CREATED ]
Origin:
Miyamoto Setsuna was a pure soul born to a well to do Shinigami named Miyamoto Ren and a relatively poor Rukongai resident called Setsuna. The pair happened upon each other by chance and from that point on, a secret relationship developed. The end result was Setsuna becoming pregnant. After the initial shock and surprise died down, Miyamoto Ren revealed his secret affair with his family and beseeched his father and the family elders to allow Setsuna and his soon to be child to settle within their residence in Seireitei as part of the family. Miyamoto Ren’s marriage had long been planned out, having a fiancée chosen for him since he was younger so the revelation infuriated his family given that his eventual marriage was supposed to secure the relationship the Miyamoto’s with another former noble family. They were strongly opposed to his request to the extent that the even rejected the idea of even allowing the child alone to be raised within the family.
Resigned, Miyamoto Ren could only continue to visit his lover and unborn child in Rukongai and try to ease their financial burdens as best as he could. Fast forward several months and Setsuna had entered labour. Progressively nearing the end of her pregnancy she had been complaining of shortness of breath, dizziness and headaches and blurring vision. The premature birth of Ren’s daughter was a traumatic event. After an arduous delivery, Setsuna experienced severe seizures to Ren’s horror and shortly after her breaths became more and more shallow before her heart ceased to beat. The following day Ren bought a tiny baby in arms, a haunted look in his sorrowful eyes.
The baby girl was named Setsuna in memory of her late mother, thus the being known as Miyamoto Setsuna came to be. The atmosphere in which she was raised was somewhat restrained. Her father, and by extension herself were ostracised from the rest of their family, her upbringing mainly overseen by her father and one of their attendants. The scarcity of births in Soul Society meant that Setsuna remained the youngest member of her family. Despite that, her grandparents, aunts and uncles rarely interacted with her, looking down on her lowly roots. As such, she grew up a quiet, reserved child with few deep attachments. Her relationship with her father was deep, him being one of the two people who were openly affectionate towards her, the other being their attendant, Hanabi.
Rise to Power:
Setsuna became particularly perceptive from a very young age. At first, she remained ignorant of her status, the black sheep of the family but over time she began to understand the looks of disdain, the harsh scolding, the rebuttals and dismissals when trying to bond with her other family members. Understandably, this had an impact on her social skills. Setsuna found it exceedingly difficult to connect with her peers. The other children close to her age teased and mocked her and her family remained indifferent to her. Punishments for things that she supposedly did saw her locked in a cramped, pitch-black abode to reflect on her ‘numerous wrongdoings’ for hours at a time, far more often than someone so young should be subjected to. As a result, Setsuna became quiet and withdrawn, keeping mostly to herself. The majority of her friends came from a vivid imagination, passing the time playing with her ‘friends’ in extravagant, phantasmal settings. Her favourite, the closest friend was ‘Tsuna’. Tsuna was kind, sweet and caring and loved to talk to Setsuna. She was an elegant lady with silver straight hair, not dissimilar to her own but longer. Her eyes were identical to her own except they held a tenderness and love that seemed to be missing in Setsuna’s gaze. Tsuna was the one who’d comfort her whilst she cried silently in the dark until she could ‘feel’ her surroundings. Tsuna was the one there to lean on when she felt lonely and isolated. It was Tsuna who occupied the best friend spot, Tsuna was always there with her even more than her father and she felt so real…
Setsuna’s first formal training with a blade came from her father. Locked in ‘the room’ alone, the sleeping Setsuna dreamt of a vast world, the great outdoors. A landscape with an abundance of lush greenery, domineering trees stretching high up into the clouds above. Flowerbeds painted a medley of colour all the way to the horizon. The surface of the many lakes glittered like crystal as the warm rays shone down from the bright sky whilst the soothing sound of water flowing through the meandering rivers. Bird songs reached her ears as she skipped and danced whilst Tsuna watched on with a satisfied expression on her face. The dreamscape was one in which Setsuna felt truly free. When she awoke, she was curled up on the cold floor with a sheathed Zanpakuto tightly in her embrace. She did not know where the sword came from or how it managed to appear but she felt an indescribable closeness towards it. After Miyamoto Ren got over the initial shock he opted to begin to train his daughter in the way of the sword. It became a focus for Setsuna who fully immersed herself in swordplay, serving both as a hobby and a well-needed distraction.
Call to Action:
By the time Setsuna was sent to the academy she was already beyond the level that was expected of students preparing to graduate having learnt the basics and more from her father. Despite that, she remained at the Academy for a year at the behest of her father. He wanted to give her a chance to interact with others her age and make a few friends and find others that she could trust and confide in. It had mixed results, for the most part, Setsuna remained distant and aloof but there were a few insistent fellows who managed to get past the silent countenance who could be considered to be amongst the first of Setsuna’s friends. After graduation, Setsuna chose to leave the confines of her family home and take resident permanently within the Gotei 5. Her decision left Miyamoto Ren with a bittersweet feeling in his heart. He really wished that he could have done more for her, that the circumstances of her birth and the frosty response from the rest of their family was replaced by a warm tenderness but he was also glad to see that she no longer felt she had to remain within the four walls of a place she could barely acknowledge as her home.
Ever since the time she first had that peaceful dream, she would see it over and over again as she daydreamed and as she slept. The real significance behind the dreams only became clear after Tsuna posed a question to her.
“You’ve known me for so long Setsuna but you’ve never asked. Do you know what my true name is?”
