One thing that Calendrea had never done was to break a promise. Oh she had certainly stretched the truth and given people the impression that she was giving them one, but she was much too evasive to actually say with a certainty that she would never do this, or she would promise to do that unless she was certain she could follow through. Today was time to make good on the last promise she had given, and that was to Nico.
Aodh’s dog jumped up and greeted the woman the moment she slipped into the Sternritter’s suite of rooms. Having rank certainly did come with its privileges. While her own rooms were a huge upgrade from the place she had rented back in Karakura Town, and they were not the dorm settings the raw recruits occupied, they were not near as spacious as her commander’s. It was not really something she concerned herself over, considering all the nights she had sleep in some dark alley with nothing between her and the street but her brother. Living in the castle was really the first descent housing she had experienced and although she had stayed over at Aodh’s house in Karakura Town and was made to feel at home, it wasn’t the same as having her own rooms.
Her grin was bright as she stooped to rub her hands at Nico’s ears rather than let him jump up on her as he had the first time they had seen each other since his move to Berlin. The huge Alsatian was easily her own height when standing up on his hind legs. It was much safer if she went down to his level rather than let him jump up to hers. “Ah Nico. Ready for that run in the forest?”, she asked for this was the promise she had made him and she hadn’t forgotten. “Wanna go outside?”, she said raising the pitch of her voice into one of pure excitement. It certainly seemed to be contagious, for his tail wagged back and forth with great enthusiasm, but he didn’t run to where his leash was hung. She rolled her eyes as the obvious reason popped into her brain, Nico didn’t speak German.
She moved to pick up the leash, the dog cocking his head toward her even as she said, “Nico, dul amach ag siúl?” Instantly the dog trotted over and sat at her feet waiting to have the leash latched onto his collar. It was simply a measure of her workload these days that she had forgotten such an obvious thing but with her mind focusing they soon navigated the linguistic hurdle and were out the door and heading for the grounds in no time. Calendrea visibly sighed as she inhaled the air. Nico, quite eager to check out the ground, basically was given his head to lead their walk. They made a half circuit of the castle before the dog caught a more interesting scent and directed them toward the woods. Once beneath the canopy of the forest, however, she took a more controlling hand upon the strap for she remembered just how dangerous these woods could be. “Siúil”, she said, calling the dog to heel. Although he could have been head strong and difficult to control if it entered his mind, his strength was considerable as this was no ankle biter by any means, but he was well trained and listened to her command.
Wandering the path she soon recognized the area as that she had come to the night before her break in of the castle just this past winter. With the changing of the seasons the forest took on a completely different cast than that of the former winter landscape. The ancient stand of trees effectively kept the forest from containing too much of a tangle of undergrowth, and yet ferns and bushes were plentiful enough. She paused at the area where the great tree had been uprooted by the Hollow, where the Quincy had lost his leg, and where his odd ability had regrown his limb anew. Wondering whatever happened to the strange wolf man, as she termed him in her mind, Nico grew bored and flopped down upon the ground while his official walker drifted in her thoughts.
