Military Discipline and Combat Readiness
Shinigami Preparatory Unit
'Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence.'
Mission
“I offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor food; I offer only hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles, and death. Let him who loves his country with his heart, and not merely with his lips, follow me.”
– Giuseppe Garibaldi
Hello and welcome to the Military Discipline and Combat Readiness unit, a program designed to boost soldier morale, to improve both individual and group effectiveness, and to help build a strong military foundation for the denizens of the Gotei. It is based in the 5th Division.
This unit was created based on an observation that the Gotei--as a military force--had become nothing more than a home for degenerates. The units founder and current leader, Rubianca Oukami, could no longer stand by and watch as the once mighty Gotei buckled under its once greatest, and now weakest, pillar: its members.
Lacking both self and military discipline, Shinigami from all throughout the system--from Academy student to Captain--have shown time and again the immensely detrimental void that exists within the Gotei's ranks. There is no room for failure, and those with any honor to their duty as guardians of the realms, will adopt the three core values of the soldier: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence.
The mission of this program is to transform Shinigami from all Divisions from ineffective, self-destructive degenerates to effective, duty-bound soldiers.
The Three Pillars
“We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.”
– Archilochos
A soldier's life is a difficult one, ridden with loss, conflict, and death. Therefore, those who live such a life must prepare for these hardships so that when the time comes, they win. In the matters of war, there is no room for failure. Thus the Three Pillars were created; they symbolize the strong foundation all soldiers must posses in order to be effective members of the Gotei.
Integrity First
The willingness to do what is right even when no one is looking. Integrity is the foundation for all other values and is the cornerstone for building trust. Integrity is the single most important part of character. Shinigami must be professional, both in and out of uniform. Integrity is not a suit that can be taken off.
Integrity is the ability to hold together and properly regulate all the elements of one's personality. A Shinigami of integrity acts on conviction, demonstrating impeccable self-control.
The values that promote integrity: courage, honesty, responsibility, accountability, justice, openness, self-respect, humility.
Service Before Self
A Shinigami's commitment and dedication to the security of Seireitei, and all of the other realms, must take precedence over personal desire. Service Before Self represents an abiding dedication to the age-old military virtue of selfless dedication to duty at all times and in all circumstances, to include putting one's life at risk, if called to do so.
Excellence
Demands Shinigami to constantly strive to perform at their best. This includes continuously searching for ways to improve one-self and new and innovative ways to complete the mission. This is what will propel the Gotei into a long-term, upward spiral of accmplishment and performance.
Program Structure and Details
“It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.”
– Julius Caesar
All Shinigami--no matter Division--are welcome and encouraged to participate in Military Discipline and Combat Readiness. Participation includes the following activities:
Drill Marching
Military marching has been around for thousands of years, and at one point, was the preferred method of combat. Today it is practiced to enhance inter-Division cohesion, to improve combat readiness, and to maintain military command structure. Marching is always led by a 5th Division Officer.
Customs and Courtesies
Rendering courtesy demonstrates your ability to act as a professional. You must exhibit professionalism, enthusiasm, and maturity at all times. These terms can easily be associated with the Pillar of Excellence. Unprofessional conduct has no place within the Gotei. General courtesies include:
- Render a verbal greeting to all senior personnel, and for Officers, render a salute.
- When practical, say 'please' and 'thank you'.
- Be on time.
- Use appropriate titles, especially when addressing an Officer.
- Do not gossip.
- Conduct yourself in a professional manner.
- Always give the senior person the position of honor when walking, riding, or sitting with them. Always take the position to the senior's left.
- Unless told otherwise, rise and stand at the position of attention when senior personnel arrive.
Reporting Procedures
All Shinigami must use reporting procedures when reporting to an Officer. These procedures are accomplished to demonstrate proper respect to an Officer and the position they hold.
Combat Preparation
The most powerful weapon a soldier possesses is their mind. Your readiness can very well determine if you live or die in combat.
Being prepared for combat is a matter of mind over body. No matter how much you train, no matter how talented you are or how proficient you become at defending yourself, your body will never perform any action until your brain tells it to do so. This means that your mind must be ready to survive in battle. Whatever is drilled during training comes out in combat--no more, no less. The areas of Combat Readiness are physical fitness, spiritual fitness, and mental fitness.
Soldiers need a strong foundation of aerobic and anaerobic fitness. They need combat fitness. Combat fitness refers to training the body and its energy systems in preparation for the high-intensity, short-duration confrontations that combat often brings.
Soldiers should have a firm understanding of their principles. If you know what you will die for, you also know what you will live for.
It is vital to have mental fitness. In combat, the most common reason for failure is the failure of the will.
Participation
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
– Abraham Lincoln
Participation is simple: just post in this thread if you'd like to have your character partake. The exact details of what you want out of the particular thread is flexible, and there are more activities available that are not listed above. We can do individual or group threads.
As a note, Combat Readiness activities do also include sparring and physical combat training, so if you've wanted to fight someone (or Ruby), you have enough reason to now.
Why am I doing this? My goal with this is to set up more interaction throughout the Gotei, and obviously, to get people writing and improving their characters (hopefully in a military sense too).
The way this will work is that anyone interested in having their character undergo any sort of military training will be offered a thread (or series of threads) that revolve around the particular activity/skill desired. This program will also help me cast a wide net for Ruby, so that she gets to know many of the active characters within the Gotei.
Additionally, my plans are to make this both the premier location for combat development and a permanent fixture of the 5th, to provide Shinigami more dynamic options for character growth.
