Merrick found himself in the midst of another Rukongai excursion. Like his many previous trips, he was once again searching for clues to the mysterious illness which had taken the life of his guardian. Four months ago, he overheard a conversation between personnel at the Seireitei General Hospital. They had been discussing a case report which had been filed by a fellow Shinigami during a patrol of the outer districts. After reading a copy of the report, it was obvious to Alain that this was the same affliction which he had seen decades earlier. He thought he had put the matter behind him and moved on, but after seeing the report, the memories came rushing back and breathed new life into this unsolved mystery. He immediately took time off and traveled to the location in the report. Apparently, a young boy had also contracted the disease. Though before he could examine the child, he was attacked and nearly killed by an unknown assailant whose face he never saw. He had always thought that Josephine's falling ill was curious, but this incident convinced him that her death was not an accident, but a murder. Since that day, he spent as much time investigating the case as possible while at the same time making sure not to neglect his Third Division duties. Unfortunately, progress had been slow with little to no new information. However, the results from a recent visit to the Research and Development Institute were beginning to look promising.
On the plus side, he had seen significant progression with his Shinigami abilities. For instance, his improved shunpo allowed him travel to and from the Rukongai with much greater ease and in less time. Additionally, he was more capable of defending himself than he was in the past. And so he marched through the 71st District without any concern for his safety. Along the way, Merrick stopped by any place where people had congregated into small village units. There he would ask questions about the obscure illness. The answers were always negative, but it didn’t stop the people from requesting his help with other medical issues. They had no way of knowing that he was skilled in kaido, but he rendered assistance when possible. These efforts were by no means altruistic. It was manipulation. The folks would remember the Shinigami who helped them and in the future, they might pass along any useful information they learn. The extra kaido practice didn’t hurt either. Merrick was just finishing up a broken arm when he felt a tingling sensation on the back of his neck. “Hmm . . .” He cleared his mind and tried to concentrate. Then he stretched out with his innate sixth sense. Dammit . . . a hollow. He was contemplating ignoring the beast, but then came the roar. Just what I need. Alain darted through the shack’s door and was quickly traversing through the trees.
