Deep within the forest a stream wound its way along the surface of the land before diving down into the world of hidden limestone features. Darkness enveloped the interior of the cavern in gradients from grey to pitch black the further one moved inward from the entrance. Unlike some of the better well known caverns in the area, this little pocket within the karst formation remained lost to time but was not without life. Several different species of bat inhabited the interior, filling the exotically shaped niches with sporadically spaced patches of fur. Clinging in repose during the day to ceiling and walls, the denizens would pour forth into the night seeking their livelihood. Such industry in number they exploited as they would descend upon the insect life along the stream and forest canopy though enviable was not shared by all of the cave’s residents.
Another larger mass of fur lay inert listening to the rustlings of its room mates as they prepared for their evening exodus out into the night. Ever observant to its environs, the entity had viewed the success of the tiny creatures as they dove through the cloud of insects scattering their numbers and feasting to the point of lethargic satiation time and time again. An all too familiar dread began to build within the watcher until even this mistress of inactivity could no longer resists its own urges to feed. Rising from her nest, Acedia bestirred herself and moved toward the exit of the cavern, the stragglers from the bat swarm speeding ever outward to escape her slow and plodding advance had little trouble outdistancing her. It was wasted effort for such meager little morsels didn’t even register as an appetizer to assuage her hunger.
As she had done upon numerous occasions over the last four years, Acedia trailed along the street toward the habitation of humanity. Some of her former strategies were still employed while others proved to be less successful to her here in Karakura Town. While there certainly was an abundance of food to be had within her new territory, there was also the greater threat of danger.
This is why she had been watching near the old ruins within the town. She could sense the others gathering there, the thin spindly looking creature and his pet dog. It was much too soon to see what they were all about, though they did present some interesting possibilities. Perhaps it was time to kick their little next a bit and see how they reacted.
The surface layers of her pelt began to shift and tremble as from beneath its heavy cloak the grub-like spawn would emerge. Five replicas of her being dropped to the ground, bald as sin and twice as ugly, the skull featured dark and overly large empty sockets, ram’s horns that swept back of their heads and useless looking teeth perched in the end of their bony snouts. Quite devoid of lower jaws, their flabby bodies rolled down the hill toward the abandoned buildings before splatting against the crumbled remains of a stone wall.
Diminished in girth, the matron of these puny replicas watched and waited for her minions to flush out her potential prospects. The quintet scurried round the stone wall and spilled into the pock marked street beyond. Whatever had happened here to create such destruction, the remnants of any spiritual activity that may have been employed was long since gone. Present, however, was the flavor of her own kind. As yet to be seen was if they would be food or partners in crime.
