What's changed?
The purpose of these threads was to shake Shinsei's foundation. To challenge his school of thought and cause him to consider that his way of approaching certain aspects of his life won't cut it anymore. At his core, Shinsei is a good hearted man, but he continues to let his way of thinking get the better of him. He is a loner, and with that comes the thought that he must tackle many obstacles on his own. That he is better off alone than with others as they could only make circumstances worse for him in the process. He isn't as confident in his abilities as he would like to be, which stunts his progression in his abilities. This has been showcased in the first set of threads above. In all three threads Shinsei was faced with situations that out grew his control, and ultimately led to unfortunate ends. One of which, that one being the thread titled "Risk", led to multiple plus souls becoming hollowfied by the arrancar known as Levi. Even when Levi was forced to make a retreat, he was still able to rip the soul chain from a young plus soul, one that Shinsei had previously spared from such a fate.
In both "The Sunbathing Shinigami" and "Friend or Foe" Shinsei could have potentially lost his life at the hands of Quincy's. In "Friend or Foe", the Quincy known as Aiden had bestowed mercy upon Shinsei when he could have easily taken his life and moved on to a hollow threat. While in "The Sunbathing Shinigami" a Quincy called Rick battled it out with Shinsei until the shinigami was battered and bloody on the ground. The only reason Shinsei still lives beyond that battle is because of Kirito's intervention. In both of these instances, Shinsei chose to approach a threat on his own, and both times almost led to his demise.
Taking these experiences to heart, and with a little encouragement from his zanpakuto spirit Ni~Tsu, Shinsei decided that maybe a change in himself was needed after all. Perhaps he should begin to open up and allow others in, to an extent of course. This truly started in the 2nd set of threads with the reuniting of Shinsei and his old friend Turen. In the solo thread "Reconnecting" Shinsei and Turen make up for lost time by having a practice match on a training ground that Turen uses from time to time. In this battle, Shinsei begins to recall what it felt like having someone whom he could call a friend by his side, even if they were clashing blades. This sparked the initial feeling of longing for something more in Shinsei, and would only grow with his next few encounters.
Shinsei's next attempt at altering his mind set came in the form of Li YingFeng, a young recruit from the Soul Academy that had just recently joined the Gotei. Shinsei had met Feng during the first ever Kidou Club meeting, one of the only social gatherings Shinsei had willingly partaken in. In the thread "Shopping For a Faux Body" Feng had visited the Fourth to attain a gigai for himself, and it just so happened that Shinsei was present at the time. Seeing no harm in helping the recruit, Shinsei offered to aid Feng with his task. This in no way is anything of huge significance, but it does show that Shinsei is putting more effort into adjusting himself to be more trusting and forthcoming with others. This is the first instance in which he is taking the initiative in establishing connections with someone.
The truly significant moment that helps to boost Shinsei's overall determination with his new goal is his meeting with Captain Rania Fujikagi in the thread "Getting Acquainted." It was here that someone had taken a particular interest in Shinsei and placed him under a microscope of sorts. Recognizing his often overlooked traits instead of judging him based on his initial appearance and behavior. Rania wanted to learn more about Shinsei, though this was mostly to see if he would be a suitable candidate for a secret assignment handed down to Rania from Captain Commander Shinoda. As Rania began to level with Shinsei and reveal some of her past with him, it made Shinsei feel a bit more at ease, as if it were okay in that moment to speak his mind. It was then that he had vaguely spoken about his past ordeals which shaped who he had become. This was something that Shinsei hardly speaks of, and only a few individuals know of his tragic past. Once the air was cleared between the two, Rania then become clear about her true plans for meeting with Shinei that day, and had assigned him to this new project. As a show of good faith, Rania also promoted Shinsei to a seated position. With this one meeting, a new path was set forth for Shinsei, and it was one that he believed would make the difference he needed.
To round out this chain of events, the thread titled "Recollecting" does a decent job of summarizing much of Shinsei's exploits throughout most of these threads. In this thread, Shinsei recollects on his past encounters, both friendly and deadly alike. He also dives a bit deeper into his past before he became a shinigami. This story gives a better understanding of where Shinsei came from and what events molded his personality. It also shows how his recent adventures have began to break this mold. Towards the end of this story, however, comes the moment that would change Shinsei forever and truly cement his decision in continuing on his new path. The death of his adoptive father, Yoshan Kawanagi. Shinsei does not witness Yoshan's death, nor does he find Yoshan after he dies. Instead Shinsei is met with a woman around the same age as him, who hands him a letter from Yoshan himself. The letter is Yoshan's final goodbye to Shinsei, and his explanation for why he could not say so in person. Yoshan was the closest thing Shinsei had to a father, and he instilled many morals and good qualities within Shinsei. Even in his letter, he chose to continue in motivating Shinsei, pushing him to become greater. He was selfless and humble even in the face of death, a quality he'd hoped Shinsei would adopt. Through this story Shinsei is also introduced to someone who will be someone of positive influence for Shinsei. The girl whom delivered Yoshan's letter, Yuki Kasada. She was Yoshan's caretaker throughout his last few months of life, and had gained a strong connection with Yoshan. She grew to care about him just as Shinsei did, seeing the good in his heart. She is there to comfort Shinsei in his time of need once he realizes that Yoshan is gone, and will play a much more prominent role in Shinsei's life going forward.
The Next Chapter
In his next arc, Shinsei will take what he has learned from his previous encounters, and apply it to his way of life. He will take his new responsibilities, friendships, & lessons and use them to help him move forward. He will be in a higher position within the Gotei now, and must take his job much more seriously than he has in the past. He will have to become more assertive now that he will be partnering up with other shinigami more often. He will seek more ways to become stronger on his journey, all while keeping in mind the values and lessons Yoshan had taught him. But most importantly and above all, Shinsei will have to attain better confidence in himself. His self doubt has always been the driving force behind his behavior. The more he can push past it, the more he can improve and begin to become the person he wants to see in himself.
