Calendrea looked up at Goldelse where the angel stood watch from the top of the Victory Tower in the center of the Großer Stern. She recalled when her father had paid the money, like many a good tourist before him, so the entire family could stand on the walkway beneath the Angel's feet and look out over all of Teirgarten. It had been an exciting moment in the young girl's life, she had been addicted to heights ever since.
Now a woman, at the feet of the pillar's platform as cars whizzed along the Great Star, she mouthed some lyrics from U2's Stay, "It's quiet and there's no one around, just the bang and the clatter as an angel hits the ground." She inhaled sharply puffing out her cheeks as she let the breath whistle outward between her lips. She didn't really think she was an angel by no means, but she certainly had hit the ground and would never be the same again.
Her mind had been troubled by the choices she had made this week even though she knew they were best for everyone involved. This week, she mused. That sure was a relief in and of itself. Instead of obsessing about things in the distant past she was more focused on the current set of issues in her life. Looking up to the platform where she had stood so long ago with her family she raised her hand as though to wave farewell to the little girl who never got to be. That part of her would always be with her, but now maybe she could stop being trapped by the memory.
Isolated from the world around her, lost within her own thoughts, she began to feel the faintest of sensations tickling at the edges of her perceptions. The process was slow to intrude upon her internal musings but eventually she let her eyes drift down to street level and searched the collection of people in the area. One of them most assuredly was Quincy.
