Today was Akihiko's first day of work since having achieved Shikai. He had been granted a week or so leave to work with it. After all, a Shinigami with a well practiced Shikai is much more useful than some guy wet behind the ears. Truthfully, they had tried to send him back to work immediately, but he had to request the time off. The Fifth Division was weird, sometimes their protocol completely different than the rest of Seireitei. He supposed this was natural though. The rest of the Soul Society prided itself on order, and functioning like a well oiled machine.
Where as the fifth excelled in chaos, and ran like a bulldozer. But still, surprisingly well oiled.
The day would come when he would take his first dangerous mission, he knew this. But he always expected it to be in the World of the Living, and not the Rukongai where he had spent the majority of his life. Listening to the briefing, seated among various other Shinigami, he supposed he was lucky. This was a suspected Hollow. When he lived in the Rukon he never seen a Hollow, despite being on the outskirts. The only danger there was simply other people. These thoughts lead him to his adoptive parents, their deaths a result consequence of his actions. He didn't think he'd ever go that far back into the Rukon. Not on a mission, at least. After all, no Shinigami helped him rid his district of bandits and highwaymen.
Emerald eyes roved the fellow Shinigami. They were a motley crew of assorted divisions. Second was well represented because apparently one of their own went missing during an investigation. There were a couple of Thirds present, in case things got dicey. And then there was him and a couple others from the Fifth. Clearly they were the muscle for tough a scenario. Akihiko gave a smirk. They always made fun of the Fifth for being mentally deficient, but who's the first people they call to hit things? People could say what they wanted, at the end of the day they felt safe because the Fifth was present.
"This concludes the briefing. SP in 1 hour, front gate."
Aki stood with everyone else, offering a small nod to the Seated Officer who had briefed them. Securing Awaisubeta, his new found partner, Akihiko strapped the claymore to his back and exited. He didn't need to do much preparation. However, just in case, he stopped by the medical center and secured a first aid kit, including reishi charged bandages for healing wounds. Sure, they had some Doc's to stitch them back up, but what if they were hurt? This wasn't so much for him, as it was a contingency in case the medics were wounded. With the first aid pouch secured to his obi, Aki proceeded to the gate. He got there early, of course, and decided to simply wait. The excitement he felt for a real mission felt as if it were running through his reiatsu. Before the others arrived, the sleeves to his shihakusho were torn off, leaving frayed ends at the shoulders. It wasn't that he didn't have freedom of movement, after all the uniform was anything but constricting. This was a personal preference, the long droopy sleeves serving more to annoy him than anything else.
When the group arrived, they set out. It was a hike, though they had reached their target location within a few hours. The sun had already began it's decline through the sky, meaning within a couple of hours night would be upon them. If this thing was able to hide until night time, things were certain to get interesting.
The Second Division present were now no longer with the group, having slipped away into crowds and onto roof tops to survey. This left the other Fifthers and Thirds to check the streets. Finally, after about ten minutes or so, Aki spoke up. "Bloody bugs are every where out here.." He waved off a wasp that had flew too close to him. As they passed a particularly desolate house, a dead animal in the side yard. Aki got as close as he dared, seeing that the corpse was covered in the very same bug he had swatted away. Emerald eyes, usually full of mirth, held a sharp edge to them. This wasn't right. The bugs here were just as they were, souls. Souls didn't need to eat, unless they were spiritually aware. In short, capable of becoming a Shinigami. These bugs were feeding on a soul, which meant they were spiritually aware. Of course, Aki only knew of one being that would eat Souls.
Standing off the fence he had leaned on to get a better look, the Shinigami glanced around. Did the wasps have something to do with this? This was simply too odd, but admittedly too far fetched to bring up at this point. No, he'd continued to look about before he made any wild claims.
