"A curse, huh?" he pondered idly-- mostly to the air as he listened to the man, contemplating his words. He supposed, in a way-- that it was a curse, he'd outlived many of his men, but how much of that had been luck and how much had been his determination to overwhelm the odds-- it was difficult to say. He'd always been stubborn as hell, especially when it came to surviving-- which was odd since compared to the men that died, he didn't really have much to live for. He lived to protect others-- and yet he failed at that all too often, but he quickly derailed the train of thought.
He knew all too well that it wouldn't lead him anywhere productive-- no point crying over the past, no point crying in general. As Dresden would explain how he joined the order, Erek would lean back a bit, eating while he listened-- his gaze focused on the man from the corner of his eye. Another take that explained the Shinigami as the enemy, it would seem-- though the idea that it had been difficult seemed odd-- the man appeared even younger than him. Even if he highballed his age to be near his own, he found it odd that it was so difficult to join.
Perhaps he'd just been that much luckier than he'd assumed? Mei hadn't treated him joining the ranks as anything that was worth noting, she'd been far more surprised that he'd survived and not been told anything about the spiritual world by anyone yet when he came to Karakura beyond the basics.
"I suppose I was just luckier than I assumed," he pondered idly, before shrugging a bit as he eyed the man. So he was German, he figured as much due to the fluency in the language he'd heard earlier-- it helped the man didn't really look Japanese either.
"How long have you been a Quincy?" the question was innocent enough, pushing the finished dish up as he sipped his beer, holding his chin in his palm as he looked at the man curiously. He definitely seemed like a Military man as well-- it seemed likely he'd only been a member for a short time as well judging by the age of his appearance-- though for how long was impossible to tell. Even if someone only went through a few years in a Military, the effects usually lingered for the rest of their lives. It was just sort of how it worked.
