Shinku was getting very angry.
She had been three days without a single Hollow to show for it, hunting with a fervor that was getting more and more risky by the hour, but it was out of desperation. She knew the chain of events that would unfold if she didn’t find food soon, and detested the idea with every fiber of her being. She would slowly fall into despair, and the Hunger would take a hold of her and make her lose either her conscious thought or her sanity, whichever broke first, and she would start attacking anything that had a decent enough spiritual power to satisfy that hunger. Chances were, she would not be as lucky as she had been when she first had become a Hollow, and she would get noticed by a Shinigami or Quincy that was strong enough to end her existence, and then that would be that. Or even worse, she would get noticed by a being who tried to put her down, and she would wake from her hunger induced rage with their blood on her hands, their soul consumed… and how many countless souls would it take to bring her consciousness back to the fore? How many years of consciousness would she lose? The thought of it terrified the Hollow to her core.
She guessed she had a few hours of sanity left. But every time she sensed a Hollow, it was always in a place that she dared not risk on the populated side of town. It was the easiest way to get noticed, being around the innocent souls that inhabited Karakura Town, because some of them were empowered, and she was not trying to have one of them come after her. But now that risk was a memory in the shadow of the fear of losing herself, and now it was simple bad luck. The past two Hollows had simply been too far away, dispatched by one of the other races before she could get to it and consume it, and in the afternoon sun, Shinku remained mostly underground in a park on the populated side of town, waiting and expanding her senses as far as she could, trying to get a feel for where the next one would be and the location of any possible threats, creating a mental map in her mind’s eye and where her Brood lay in wait. They were spread out in key locations in five different groups, each capable of tearing through a beast-like Hollow in a short amount of time given they were able to get there first. Her fear and hunger was making them restless, and she did her best to calm herself and by proxy, her minions. She couldn’t lose focus now… there was simply no hope that could be born of that sort of recklessness.
And then she felt it… a strong pulse of a Hollow dropping in from the sky. It was large, but didn’t seem that powerful… this would make the perfect meal. She would need to hunt again immediately, but she could go back to the relative safety of the more deserted side of town and resume her normal tactics and failsafes. Part of her wondered if she should just make the jump to Heuco Mundo and go for that target rich environment, but that wasn’t a good place. Shinku would likely succumb to her base instincts, begin devouring them, and make that leap into becoming a Gillian within the matter of hours, and there were still far too many factors about that process to make that a plausible idea. She issued the order, and an entire pack of her Brood ripped out of the ground nearby, having burrowed themselves there for concealment, and tore through the streets towards the Hollow with a zealous fervor that belied their small size. There were eight Aka Okami in the front, the small, wolf-natured beasts that were all claws, teeth and ferocity, tearing along the road and completely ignoring the terrified Plus Soul that was nearby. Behind it, but moving quickly as well, was the pack leader, the Aka Hanta slithering and assessing the situation, giving guidance to the Okami based off the instructions that it was fed from Shinku herself. She was watching through the eyes of her Hanta, and could adjust strategies based on the situation as it unfolded, which was easily her best ability. Using this method, she was able to use her intellect and tactics to gain the advantage over stronger Hollow and tear them apart, feeding her strength. But part of her began to wonder, as she grew in strength, why was it making it to where there was less time between when she felt the need to feed? When would it become easier? Would it ever?
And if not, what was she to do?
