Merrick marched down the corridors of the Seireitei General Hospital at the end of another mundane shift. Of course this was a good thing for any prospective patients, but it left him without any challenges. He couldn’t even remember the last time he learned something new or exciting in his chosen profession. Though if he were being honest, the human world had been just as bad. Alain had just returned from a two week stint among the little people and barring an exception or two, the experience had been equally dull. He couldn’t quite explain it. His day to day life hadn’t really deviated from the norm, but he still felt a general stagnation, as if a kind of pall had settled over him. Thus, when he passed the nurse’s station, he was relieved to receive the message from Fifth Division. Prior to his assignment in the human realm, he had requested additional martial training. Perhaps it would have been a possible to obtain within Third, but his peers were usually too focused on kido. So why not seek out the experts. And while he held no fondness for combat, maybe this was just what he needed to eliminate his doldrums.
The letter indicated that he was to meet a Fifth Division officer by the name of Malix Katir. Apparently, he held the position of spellblade, one who combined kido with a martial style. Merrick wondered if this was the reason why Malix had been singled out to him, a member of the spellcasting elite. Though in his opinion, few individuals were worthy of that distinction, himself included. In any case, after a brief stop by the barracks, he set out to contact this “spellblade.” Upon arriving in Fifth Division territory, he headed to the officer’s quarters where the note said to meet. The building was easy enough to find as he had been there one other time. However, on this occasion, he had the benefit of a scheduled appointment. As he strolled along the hallway, he kept an attentive eye on the placards affixed on each door as he searched for the correct one. Last room on the left. Looks like someone is sending a message. Merrick was aware of the Fifth’s distaste for kido. According to them, might made right and there was no place for spellwork. Honestly, he was surprised that such a position even existed. Who would want such a title. Guess I am about to find out. And so with the knuckles of his right hand, he rapped at the door.
