Machie
[ AT A GLANCE ]
Age / Apparent Age: Machie is approximately 87 years old, though appears to be in her early twenties
Sex: Female
Height & Weight: 5'5" & 130lbs
Hair & Eye Color: Black & Hazel
Positive Traits: Curious, kind, pragmatic, and perceptive
Negative Traits: Hesitant, shy, and conciliatory --Machie is a little too afraid of conflict and eager to please
Loyalties: The Gotei, herself
Snapshots:
[ ON THE SURFACE ]
Physical Description: Machie is a lean woman whose curves are mostly hidden by her shihakusho --or loose fitting pants and sweaters whilst off duty. Her small nose, unblemished earth toned skin, and heart shaped face create a youthful appearance, but the somewhat melancholy set of her lips hint at the woman's advanced age. Machie's pupils are verticle, which draws attention to her face, but the contemplative look she usually wears can discourage people from approaching her. Machie's hair is dark, tightly coiled, and very thick. For convenience, she keeps it in braids that are often twisted in a bun at the back of her head. Her appearance reflects her focus on her goals and tendency to prioritize utility and comfort over everything else: she wears no makeup, her hair is almost always up, and her clothing is plain.
Despite her distinctive features, Machie easily blends into a crowd. She moves efficiently and quietly, keeping her posture upright albeit relaxed. Up close, Machie's stillness and tendency towards quietness can come across as a bit unsettling. Like a cat, the dark skinned woman does not blink often-- giving the impression that she is staring. Her generally neat appearance, vaguely earthy scent, and lack of expression create an unnatural blandness that is at odds with her unusual eyes.
Spiritual Description: Machie's spiritual presence is subtle, comforting, and reminds people of the serene rumble of a contented cat purring. Occasionally grey cat ears tipped with purple can be spotted atop her head. Likewise, a smooth tail, tapered at the end can be seen waving behind her if one is paying attention or perceptive.
[ BEHIND THE EYES ]
Personality: Machie is kind and usually courteous to those around her, although she prefers watching and listening from a distance to interacting with people up close. Her personality has many cat-like qualities including an odd sleeping schedule, unpredictable bursts of energy, and patience when focused --all hidden behind mostly unreadable expressions. She usually seeks to be alone when not interacting with her comrades in arms in an official capacity such as training or missions. Those who are fortunate enough to gain Machie's trust discover that although reserved, she is affectionate, thoughtful, and quick witted.
On her own, the feline shinigami is diligent; she spends a lot of time in libraries reading about subjects that interest her, particularly the relationship between zanpakuto spirits and shinigami.
Despite her usually gentle demeanor, Machie enjoys hunting hollows and combat. However, social interaction and the strain of being a shinigami are very taxing for Machie. As a result, she often sleeps during the day in odd locations and spends a good deal of time meditating.
Goals
Achievements:
[ GUARDIAN ANGEL ]
Zanpakutō Spirit: Nasima is a small, grey cat with faint, lilac tiger stripes. Not unlike Machie, Nasima is not a spirit of many words. The zanpakuto spirit primarily communicates via a combination of emotional impressions and body language. More rarely, Nasima will speak to Machie. Other than her name, the enigmatic spirit has revealed little about herself or Machie's past.
Inner World: Machie's inner world consists of a room that resembles a sitting room, complete with a fireplace.
Power: Nasima vibrates reiryouku in a fashion similar to sound waves. A variety of effects ranging from painfully high pitched noise to destabilizing vibrations can be produced using Nasima's power.
Zanpakutō: When sealed, Nasima is a tanto with a matte grey blade and white silk wrapped around the hilt. A small charm shaped like a cat's paw dangles from a short chain which protrudes from between the layers of silk. Unsealed, Nasima takes the form of a black chain whip with two white flags: one near the dart at the end and the other wrapped around the handle.
[ LEGACY CREATED ]
Origin: Machie was born in 1930 to a family in Spain. Her life there was cut short when her father, a veteran from World War I, accidentally killed her during a PTSD attack. She reincarnated in Rukongai where she learned Japanese and wandered on her own. A couple of thugs attempted to kidnap and sell Machie into prostitution, but the young soul was rescued by a man named Kenshi, who then looked after her until he deemed her old enough to support herself. Some years later, Machie took in two orphans despite being homeless. She was recommended to join the Acedmy of Spiritual Arts after a semi-successful kido attempt. Machie joined the Academy because she believed that working as a shinigami would allow her to support her adopted siblings. For the time being, she left them in Kenshi's care.
Machie was a compassionate soul, who probably never should have been a shinigami; no one knew this, however, because Machie kept her sympathy for hollows to herself. Machie had synesthesia, but it was undiagnosed. The sound of hollow spiritual pressure sounded like the dying wails of people, which made fighting them a challenge despite being taught that it was her duty to purify hollows. Her struggles were intensified when a less experienced shinigami used his shikai ability on her and forced her to have a traumatic experience in which the details of her near kidnapping and prostitution were recalled all too vividly. After this, Machie struggled to eat or sleep properly. Although she had begun to recover, it wasn't in time to save her.
A particularly strong hollow corrupted her reiryoku during a battle. Weakened from the consequences of her trauma, Machie was unable to contain the void and was hollowfied. Her year as a hollow is lost --no one reallly knows where she was or how many souls she consumed. Upon being purified, Machie returned to Soul Society with virtually no memory of her past lives. Lost, confused, and nagged by the feeling that she had forgotten something very important, Machie wandered Rukongai in search of a name, as she no longer had one, and a new identity.
For a while, Machie's life was relatively uneventful. She spoke so little, others assumed she was mute or deaf. The constant sounds of spiritual pressure caused by the way her synesthesia affected her reiatsu perception frightened her. To escape the feeling of being lost and shut out the constant noise, Machie studied and meditated. She chose a new name for herself, a word from an African language that meant something along the lines of a lost jewel being found.
Rise to Power: Shinigami took notice of Machie because her spiritual pressure was unusually high for a civilian soul. They recruited her once they confirmed that she was not mute, but fluent in at least three languages. In the Academy, Machie quickly relearned the material. Her instructors noticed that the young woman had synesthesia, which --in Machie's case-- meant that she heard sounds whenever she detected reiryoku. Her quiet nature and preference for solitude made her short stay at the Academy a somewhat lonely one. Most people were put off by how little she spoke and her catlike eyes or jealous of how quickly she learned.
Machie graduated a year later near the top of her class. The one thing Machie struggled with was connecting with her blade. Her zanpakuto spirit was unusually quiet and uncommunicative. Determined to connect with her zanpakuto spirit, Machie joined the Fifth Division where she could focus on her battle prowess and swordsmanship. She immediately began to focus on honing her zanjutsu and researching any library she could get into for information about the relationship between zanpkuto spirits and shinigami.
Call to Action: Machie's ambition to recreate her identity and discover who she once was has driven her since she woke up in Soul Society with no name and only fragmented memories. As she seeks to find new challenges and remnants of old lives, the feline woman finds more questions than answers and a bigger adventure than she expected.
