It was a standard mission to perform a few soul burials that brought Machie to the senkaimon. She stood before the large gate waiting for her partner. All Machie knew was that his name was Yuudai Oshiro and he was from the Second Division --an assassin. The feline woman was curious about what he would be like, but also nervous. She began to bite at her lower lip while she waited, causing the skin to swell a bit.
Machie knew that the mission should be easy and that she was prepared for it. Her zanpakutō was strapped to her side, ready to send plus souls on their way. Her shihakusho was crisp and neat, smelling faintly of earth. Her hair was braided and pulled back into a neat bun at the back of her head to keep it out of the way. Not only was Machie presentable, but she was prepared for such a simple mission.
However, what no amount of training could prepare her for was meeting someone knew. Machie sensed a presence approaching her; her reiryoku coalesced, cat ears appearing atop her head. One ear twitched at the sound of cicadas keening. It was an interesting sound to be associated with someone’s spiritual pressure. Was it her partner approaching.
Machie turned her head, half lidded hazel eyes searching for the source of the spiritual pressure. The dark skinned woman’s bland expression hid her anxiousness well. If only she could feel as calm as she looked. An ethereal tail curled around her ankles as the other shinigami came into view.

Yuudai stiffled a yawn as he walked along the main road to the Senkaimon. He was on his way to meet his partner for this mission, someone from the fifth division, probably some oversized bag of useless muscle and less brain than syphilitic gibbon. As the man approach the area where the road widened to the courtyard before the Senkaimon, he reached behind his head and began to tie his hair up into a ponytail using a piece elastic that was around his wrist. He wasn't expecting to fight on this mission, but it's better to be prepared.
Yuudai stepped out into the courtyard and paused to look around for his companion for the day. Lots of Shinigmi were walking around, but they all seemed to be grouped, non by themselves. That is until one of the larger groups walked away and he saw someone stood by themselves and looking rather nervous. Was this small girl really the one he was looking for? Was she really from the fifth?
The man quick stepped over to the girl and beamed a smile down at her, "Hello, I'm Yuudai. Is it safe to assume you are... " He paused while he remembered the name he was given, "Machie? Was it?" As he finished his introduction he looked over the girl now that he was closer. 'Are those cat ears? And a tail? That is... Interesting.'
Machie observed Yuudai quietly, cat ears turning as she took in the sound and feel of his spiritual presence. His spiritual presence reminded her of the sound of cicadas keening on a sunny day. It was… pleasant. Her placid expression didn't change, though. She decided to think about why his smile was so nice later. They had business to attend to.
“I am Machie,” the female shinigami confirmed in a soft voice. “Pleased to meet you. Shall we go, Mr. Oshiro?”
The cocoa skinned woman lifted a hand and a black hell moth settled on her palm. She tilted her head to the side, braids falling over one shoulder. The cat ears and tail seemed to fade from existence, but if one listened closely faint rumbling like a cat's purr was audible.
Machie took careful, controlled breaths to still her nerves. This was a routine mission. She could do this. Besides, Yuudai’s friendly manner was pleasant.

Yuudai's smile twitched slightly as his new partners face stayed blank. 'Good luck with this one.' 'You only ever talk when I don't want you to. Is that on purpose?' Yogan just chuckled in repsonse before fading to silence once again. 'Damn swords, why are they such an annoyance?'
He focused back on his partner, "The pleasure is mine." His gaze shifted as the butterflies came into view, one landed in the other shinigamis hand, while his own landed on his shoulder, "You're late. Maybe I should keep one of you as a pet to make sure this stops happening." The man looked back over to Machie and gestured to the gate behind her, "I believe we should probably head off now, yes."
The portal leading to the mortal world opened up and his smile dropped from his face. "You seem fairly... young." He hated using that word for shinigami, you could never tell the age of one simply by looking at them, but he could think of a more polite term for inexperianced. "Have you done many missions on Earth before?" Without giving her a chance to reply he stepped forward into the tunnels that were the roads between Seireitei and Earth, she could answer as she walked. Hopefully.
Machie followed Yuudai through the portal, standing a few inches back and adjacent to him --not quite trailing behind him but not at his side either. Her eyes slowly swept back and forth, taking in the appearance of the pathway the hell butterflies lead them down. The ethereal pathways interested her because they reminded her of her own mind, hazy with the unshakeable feeling that there was something beyond, something not quite tangible but nonetheless real. A few minutes later, she remembered that Yuudai had asked her a question.
“This is one of my first missions,” the dark-skinned woman admitted.
Although Machie knew this was the part in the conversation where she should ask a question or make a leading statement to encourage the other shinigami to tell her more about himself, she had nothing to say. The feline shinigami was abysmal at small talk. Fortunately for her, their walk was short and the senkaimon opened up in front of them, revealing their earthly destination.
Carefully, Machie stepped out, reishi coalescing under her feet, allowing the feline woman to crouch midair and look around. The purple-tipped cat ears reappeared, swivelling back and forth as if in attempt to catch sounds. A grey, striped tail curled around her feet. Concentrating on the reiatsu in her surroundings always made her own spiritual energy manifest more clearly. At first, the sounds of reiatsu were an incomprehensible cacophony. Slowly, she was able to focus on separate signatures in the area. The buzz of humans made it difficult to pick out other things, but Machie could faintly hear the tinkling sound she associated with plus souls.
She turned her head to look up at Yuudai. “Can you sense them, Mr. Oshiro?”
The tail curled around her feet flicked upwards, the tip curling and the cat ears atop her head turned forward to face him. Her face, however, had a rather nonplussed expression --at odds with the clear curiosity in her body language.
