None of the “joint” missions which Merrick had been assigned in the past, had ever truly required working together with others. Perhaps both parties were tasked with the same job in a same area, but each were allowed to conduct their business as they saw fit. However, that dynamic probably wouldn’t work for his next undertaking. An Arrancar had been appearing around Japan with increasing regularity, killing each Shinigami that had crossed his path. The Gotei had finally deemed them troublesome enough to warrant sending three Shinigami to deal with them. Like Merrick, the other two were unseated, but the military organization determined their strength and skill levels to be satisfactory after a careful analysis of the enemy. As was often the case, Alain preferred to work alone, but neither was he foolish. If a group effort was judged necessary, then who was he to argue with his betters.
In preparation for the upcoming assignment, Merrick was on his way to Second Division headquarters to meet another member of the team. He had visited the domain of Special Forces on a handful of occasions, so he knew a few people already. However, none of them stood out as likely candidates for the job except for one officer and if he was involved, then it most likely wouldn’t have been a group mission in the first place. Unfortunately, Alain hadn’t been provided with the name of who would be joining, but he was certain that it wouldn't be the officer. When he marched into the lobby, he saw no one except for the normal guards and the girl stationed at the front desk. Apparently, his arrival was unexpected, but if he was going to be placing his life in the hands of another, then he definitely wanted to meet them beforehand. His superior likely had the same idea because she was supposed to have arranged the meeting that he was to be having in the next few minutes. He hoped that it hadn't slipped her mind because he didn't have the name of his team members. Striding to the front desk, he paused until the young girl offered her attention. “Alain Merrick of Third Division. I am supposed to be meeting with a member of your squad who has been enlisted as part of a three person team for an operation in the living realm. Unfortunately, I was not provided with the name. One of my superiors was supposed to have made arrangements to meet beforehand. Perhaps you are privy to information which I am not?”
“Have a seat and I will see what can be found out regarding the situation.”
Alain walked to the left wall and sat in one of three wooden chairs as he waited for the squad receptionist to obtain some answers. In the meantime, he removed a notebook from his kosode. Upon flipping through the pages, he found a few loose sheets of paper. They were copies of an analysis report that Fourth Division had compiled about the Arrancar. Alain wanted to be prepared and hoped that his allies were taking the same steps. No one knew when the target would appear next, so the time frame was fluid. It could be days or weeks, but everyone was expected to be ready whenever the orders to deploy were handed down.
