Niji sat on the edge of her hospital bed. Over a year recuperating from the insane outcome from her distraction from Obsession, and his invasion of Seireitei. She still didn't know how she survived, after his reiatsu pierced her mind, and her Zanpakuto's utter terror. Things were a blur. Some how or for some reason she couldn't understand he let her live. But in her frantic dash away from the scene, nothing really made sense. She got bits and pieces from that day in her head. And somehow had a building, well part of one, fall on her.
She got more broken bones than she knew she had, and the first several months were just putting her back together. After that there were psyche evals, which were met with raised eyebrows, scans which turned out she was 'in a healthy weight for her size and build' whatever that meant, but of course the details of anything they found was waved off as 'she was healthy', and of course physical rehabilitation. Which to her took far longer than she would've liked. But that wasn't the worst of it.
Whatever Obsession had done, whoever he was supposed to be. It shook her Zanpakuto in ways that Niji could never have dreamed of. Where Iroppoi was once boisterous, chatty, and filled with a debauchee-like sense of fun. She was slow to talk, fearful, and was taking far longer for her to emotionally recover than Niji had been. Even now she was more reluctant, and more hesitant to talk about what she sensed that scared her so. Whatever she was afraid of him finding out about her, it unnerved Niji to her core. But there was at least one bit of good news. She was getting out today, hopefully.
All she needed was a doctor to come and tell her that she was fit for duty. Or paid leave. Or whatever other judgement they could make. Although with all those deaths on her hands because Obsession got angry at her, she was sure to be even more hated in Rukongai, and possibly Seireitei than she was before the incident. Even if noone else blamed her for those killed by Obsession's hand when she distracted him, she wasn't sure she could ever forgive herself. Although it did prove just what a monster she really was, that all of her time as a Shinigami didn't make her a hero, didn't change her true nature. Even when doing her best to be good, others still suffered, still died. And if the blame didn't rest on her? Than who?
She leaned back on her bed, gazing at the ceiling and sighed, "Life's always got to be too complicated. But I'm almost out of here ... I hope."
