As part of Alain’s ongoing investigation, he once again found himself among Second Division territory. Recently, word had spread of a Shinigami with a power capable of stealing a person’s spiritual energy. Given the nature of his guardian’s death, this warranted looking into. Unfortunately, the rumor hadn’t been accompanied by a name. So when he stopped at the front desk to inquire about the individual in question, the secretary wasn’t immediately willing to single out a colleague. After some minor coaxing on his part as well as informing her of the reason for consultation, medical application, she relented and told him that the Hana, the individual whom he sought, could be found in one of their dedicated training facilities. Merrick’s explanation had been a fabrication, but it could turn to truth later if necessary.
The squad’s training yard wasn’t difficult to find. He had been there just days ago in preparation for upcoming group assignment. It was actually at the conclusion of this initial meeting when he first overheard about the Shinigami with the energy siphoning powers. He would have preferred to look into the matter at the time, but he had prior obligations, namely a shift at the hospital and punctuality was important to him. He also wanted to avoid anything which could rouse the suspicions of his peers and being late was hardly the way to go unnoticed. As such, he had to wait for nearly half a week before his schedule was freed up enough to explore this latest development.
There were times when Alain wished that Shinigami wore name tags. This was one of those times. When he finally made his way to the division’s extensive training yard, there must have been twenty to thirty Shinigami engaged in various activity, maybe more. The vast majority were involved in one on one sparring. Half of the pairs were crossing blades while the other half were locked in hand to hand combat. Merrick hadn’t quite warmed up to the latter style of fighting. If two people were of equal skill with one using a weapon and the other their hands, the advantage seemed obvious. Nevertheless, he still planned to improve upon his hakuda when the time allowed. More pressing matters were at hand. As he walked along the perimeter of the training grounds, his sky blue eyes began scanning for his target. Their sex allowed him to easily eliminate a little more than half of the people present. Of course, he could simply ask one of them to identify Hana, but until then, he would observe his peers, accumulating information which might prove useful at a later time.
