Alain had just arrived for a brief two day stint in the human world. Fourth Division was conducting some type of experiment and Merrick was tasked with rendering medical support in the event of an emergency. He wasn’t fond of the assignment, but it provided him with an opportunity to continue his personal investigations. He just had to ditch his fellow Shinigami and knowing how his peers tended to operate, he had a plan in mind. As soon as the scientists had prepared their test equipment, he began to ask all manner of questions about what they were doing. He knew that the they would remain tight-lipped and find his hovering to be an annoyance. So after only a few hours of the first day, they asked him to use his time doing whatever he wanted to do as long as it was elsewhere. Merrick couldn’t agree with their suggestion fast enough, but still said to contact him if necessary. Next, he had to put in a word with the two members of the Infantry Fighting Force who had been tasked with security detail. He found the pair sitting atop the roof of a nearby parking structure playing cards. “Our Fourth Division colleagues insist that I am in the way. So I am going to do some work of my own and will be back tomorrow afternoon. I know that you can handle any trouble which might arise without me, but I will return immediately if called.” Then in a burst of reiryoku, he was gone.
By midday, he had visited every location of a recent hollow encounter in Karakura Town. Unfortunately, it proved to be an exercise in futility. Examining a scene days or weeks after the fact, was unable to yield any information to assist his investigation. Unless the cloaked and hooded figure appeared while he was around, he was unlikely to learn anything significant. In the meantime, he had another undertaking which he could accomplish. Most people would have probably called it sightseeing, but Alain would have disagreed. He had purpose. As part of his continuing effort to build a private laboratory and workstation, he scoured the city to see as many diverse examples of human architecture as possible. Taking notes about each building that he saw, everything was going well until a scream interrupted his work. His first thought was a hollow attack since that was often the case in the living realm, but he hadn’t detected a reiatsu signatures. Of course, his mind had been occupied so he may have missed it. Reaching within his robes, he retrieved his denreishinki to be sure. There was nothing on the screen, but the screams continued. Although now they were more like cries. Rising from his seat atop the church clock tower, he decided to look into the disturbance.
A block from the church, Merrick found a small girl with a broken leg. The sizeable branch near her person allowed him to easily deduce what had occurred. Normally, he would have ignored her, but because help didn’t appear to be arriving anytime soon, he saw an opportunity to heal and examine his first human. In particular, Merrick was curious as to the effectiveness of kaido on a non-spiritual body. Initially, he was concerned that the other two children would get in the way, but one quickly ran off, most likely to get help. The other wound up being too squeamish to stand near the little girl. Thus, Alain dropped to one knee and placed a hand on her forehead. Performing subtle manipulation of her brain chemistry, he soon had the girl resting in an unconscious state. Then he set the bone and applied his modified Yakushisho around the lower leg. Placing his right hand on the top surface of the bluish-white reiryoku box, healing tendrils began to form at each fingertips. They quickly extended to seek out the injured limb. Brushing along the skin, the tendrils appeared to seal the wound site. Next, they burrowed within the body as Merrick directed them to mend the bone and any damaged tissue. When his work was complete, the tendrils and reiryoku box disappeared. Snapping his fingers in front of the girl's face, her eyes flashed open. With his work complete, he left her to the care of friends while he walked to a nearby park to write down his observations from healing a human.
