While passing through one of the market squares of the 19th District, Merrick thought that he caught a glimpse of the cloaked and hooded stranger out of the corner of his eye. As he spun his head around, he saw someone walk around a corner and into an alley. Without a second thought, he spurred himself forward at a brisk walk and followed after them. Upon entering the alleyway, he found no one except a pair of teenage kids playing some manner of dice game. “Hey. Did anyone else just pass through here?”
“Damn right. Dude just knocked over the board and kept walking.” One of the kids jingled a handful of dice while the other was picking up a cardboard square which acted as a gaming table.
Alain offered them a quick nod. “Man or woman?”
“No clue. Face was covered. Went that way though.” The shorter of the pair gestured towards the opposite end of the alley.
Before Merrick could ask anything else, he noticed a shadow move swiftly along the ground. He immediately leapt to the rooftop to find his nemesis a building away. Are you just going to stand there? Alain’s right arm slid across his abdomen and began tapping the base of his zanpakuto hilt. Then he focused his innate sixth sense in the direction of his foe. Ah, yes. Now I can sense you. It still wasn’t an easy task, but until recently, they had been able to mask their presence to the point where tracking was impossible. Perhaps this was no longer the case. Likewise, maybe they would no longer be able to sneak up on Merrick. If true, then all of the hard work with Aleith’Sor was starting to pay off. “I have a lot of questions for you, but we can start with your name.”
Alain thought that he could almost sense the smile forming within the darkness of the cowl. Unfortunately, he wasn’t given the chance for a closer inspection as three crimson, fiery-infused bala were launched at his torso in quick succession. As he propelled himself to the side, he heard a second familiar swoosh as his quarry vanished from the roof. However, this time Merrick could detect the spiritual signature as he hurtled forward in pursuit. What began on the rooftops of the 19th District, continued into forest after forest as Merrick was led deeper into the Rukongai. Despite the natural impediment of the trees, their technique was simply better than the Third Division medic. In wide open space, he could almost maintain equal footing. but after all of the cornering as well as quick starts and stops, his adversary eventually pulled away. Merrick suspected that he lost the visual around the 25th District with the spiritual energy disappearing soon after. Standing at the edge of a random clearing, he finally turned to leave. Alone with his thoughts of another failure, he almost missed the body peeking from beneath a nearby bush. As he stepped closer, the black cloth became more apparent. Was this their point, to lead me here? Is anyone that precise? Not wanting to move the body, he cut away the bush with his zanpakuto and then knelt down to inspect the body. The lack of wounds was now a familiar sight, but this was the first Shinigami victim. Now, all races have been targeted.
