Janus looked over her shoulder as the clock on the wall ticked slowly. To her, it was both glorious and majestic as time moved on. It had been slow during the summer since she had finally finished and re-opened the Bed and Breakfast known as 時計歩きTokei Aruki. The sign outside was vaguely lit by a small light that was next to the small trail that ushered in an almost disquieting feeling at early nightfall. Janus did not have unlimited funds when she had first made the place and having half of it blown away by terrorists or something, did not help. Her mind raced forward as she focused on the potential future and potential customers that would wonder in for the night or day. Heck even to just eat her cooking would be fine, it would have given her something to do.
Janus had been unlucky in the side work department lately and the small 4 room one small restaurant hotel, that was basically a large house on the outskirts, had been almost vacant for a while. This was partly due to the slow summers with most people preferring to visit the beach or someplace that might actually take a few days to see. Karakura, was nothing like that and Janus was in awe of its natural simplicity. Futures shifted as her phone was about to ring, but it ended up branching and falling away a few seconds later. The unfortunate thing about a small place like this was often the amount of people just to scared to call and make a reservation.
Janus moved from the counter that was both the “concierge” and the “gift shop” counter and wondered over to the wine closet. Being Italian by birth, she had over thirteen-hundred bottles in the climate and humidity controlled room. She looked over the stocks to see if anything needed reordering, to give herself something to do. Janus had ordered for the restaurant, a small seven table Italian parlor she called “A taste of Italy.” Which was funny cause she found herself making sushi and other Japanese staples than she found herself cooking fun things from her homeland.
Janus' outfit today, for the customers walking in, would have confused most people. She was wearing a white button up with a generic t-shirt under it. The last two buttons were not buttoned, and the slacks that went with it could have fit perfectly on a man or a woman. Janus had had customers before who had simply gone to meet her because of internet rumors that she was a transvestite, or a trap, the list of rumors had gone on since she was a child. Most did not and probably would never know what Janus' gender actually was. Not for lack of trying to guess it, but because she just never really went into details with the fact that she had the smallest breasts ever and her hips were small enough to be on a male soccer player more than a female gymnast. She did not mind people not knowing, or confusing it, she did not have the looks to go parading around in make up either. Her bob cut was easily maintained after a morning shower just by running a decent promenade through her hair.
A future flickered in the back of her senses and she looked out the front window towards the small road that lead to the street and roundabout that could be used to park from those that had motor vehicles as a few seconds later a car drove by on its way out of town via the roads leading future into the mountains and away from civilization. Janus blinked a few times and then went back to remedial tasks that she had handled herself. She was the only staff member when she was on and to be honest, though it was quite the amount of work. She liked it that way. Futures flickered in and out of her mind as she made daily choices, and dropped others for reasons as normal as procrastination and downright boredom. Eventually making her way back to the front desk and waiting again.
